I have noticed in the first few episodes some interesting things!

Lots of stars too - Henry Cavill, Idris Elba and James McAvoy.

Thanks @Italiangreyhound I was always confused about Helen remember vaguely as pp on the other thread she was a criminal profiler I thought she was killed by a woman who was a victim of a chap who committed war crimes in Kosovo was she the same Helen who Tommy married & lost a baby or was that another love interest?

I didn’t watch the original Linley from the start, but due to the comments in the other thread I thought I’d give it a whirl. It’s great seeing now well-known actors in early roles. Mr Bates from Downton!

Hi, I've just started re watching it.

What is interesting is in the pilot he is besotted with Deborah, who marries Lyndley's best friend, while Lyndley stands by as 'best man'. She is played by the stunning actress, Amanda Ryan, with short very dark hair.

In the pilot Amanda Ryan played his good friend Helen Clyde, with long reddish brown hair, i think.

Then by episode 2 of series 1 the actress playing Helen is Lesley Vickerage, with short very dark hair.

And now he is quite obsessed Helen.

But yes odd (imo) that the 2nd actress to play Helen looks similar to the actress who played his ex fiancee/best friend's wife in the pilot!

I'm just on ep 2 or 3 if you count the pilot & Helen is just in it again as the gf of another character.

Yes sorry Amanda Ryan was the bride marrying his best friend and Emma Fielding was Helen.

And two other actors played Helen in later episodes.

I think Lyndley, like Morse, has a passionate side story! While Morse falls for any woman 10 years his junior, Tommy falls for one dark-haired beauty at a time!

I've paid poor attention to the first half of Ep 1 of the original, and better attention to the second half. Interesting. Was it really slower-feeling than the new series or was that just my imagination? Better direction?

I found the various incarnations of Helen and similar looking dark haired women very confusing. I hadn't remembered that there was a Helen in the pilot, I just remembered the dark haired woman who married his friend and presumed she was "Helen" and was then confused as to why she started going out with someone else in series 1. I also confused the short haired painting expert in a later episode of series 1 with Helen which didn't help as she had lots of children so I thought she had married the bloke from the previous episode.

I will be watching episode two of new series tonight then second episode of old series before Good ship murder tv series tomorrow.

Although I'm not sure I've ever seen Lesley Vickerage with long hair.

I think all the women looked attractive and I prefer a natural face and really hate pumped up lips. I just thought they all looked very similar particularly if there is a gap between episodes and they aren’t shown together

I can’t remember the fashion, I know short hair was definitely more fashionable. I have had a bob for more than 30 years! Sometimes shoulder length, sometimes fringe. In fact I’m not really sure if it’s classed as a bob!

I think Helen is definitely getting prettier and looking more ethereal. I am feeling that Lynley is not as nice as I remember him. I'm up to the end of season 2.

Lynley seems to always be in conflict with someone!

I didn't like the Helen in the new series!

I've just watched the one set in Cambridge.

Helen is helping her sister who has recently had a baby.

I thought the dialogue was so odd.

She had given up on relationships because of the previous one she had & because of how her sister's marriage is🙄

Didn't seem quite realistic for someone of 40!

Thought that Selina Cadell was so good in this.😢

I thought Helen was awful in the episode set at his mansion. The whole plot was OTT and silly but Helen was such a po faced misery. They are very mismatched and she was overly desperate to get married where as he just wanted to see how things progressed. She obviously doesn’t know him or his family at all and would have been better taking her time and ditching for someone more like her

Has been playing on Drama channel-20 for yonks.
Personally I have never got into it but my parents both loved it.

I thought Helen and Lynley were both unprofessional. Her getting annoyed he wouldn’t arrest that young man!
But I’m enjoying it, Sharon Small is a good actor.

I think she's supposed to be from a similar background & they know each other socially.

Hence both at the wedding in the pilot.

I think for the series they give her a career so that she needs to often be with Lynley?

Tommy and Heken's relationship seems very stiff.

Spoiler ....I'm now on season 5 and Helen has reappeared. She is played by a different actress and the chemistry is a lot better between them.

Catherine Russell now plays Helen.

Ironically, Helen now looks a lot more like Sharon Small as Barbara Havers!

I liked Catherine Russell as Helen.

Well I suppose it has moved on by then & the Helen character has changed.

Just watched the one of their engagement party.

Sad& also silly.

Havers looked lovely in her black dress.

SS is attractive I think though.
