The Inspector Lynley Mysteries from 2001 - anyone want to re-watch on BBC iplayer

I have noticed in the first few episodes some interesting things!

Lots of stars too - Henry Cavill, Idris Elba and James McAvoy.

The Inspector Lynley Mysteries

The distinguished detective. Upper-crust DI Lynley is paired with put-upon DS Havers. Crime and class clashes in the original adaptation, with Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small.

Yes it just seemed funny having Helen played by three actresses who all look so different. And the second one looking a lot like the a one who played Caroline in the pilot!

I'd forgotten this thread and in fact did start watching the original after finding the new one just daft.

But gave up, partly as others have said I got confused as to who was the love interest, who was the best friend, and glad to know I am not the only one.

And also Helen as shown in the early episodes was a complete pain in the neck - and sad to say once they were sort of back together I found Lynley in love and demonstrating it quite a turn off!

But otherwise as a series so much better than the facile 2026 recreation.

I liked he original series for the mysteries, which I thought were good and Havers was excellent.

I think the stories lines are certainly better that the newer version and think that the Havers role is quite well done.

But for me second time round it was the whole Helen and Lynley off on silliness got me down.

Maybe I should have just skipped over a few episodes and re-started.

I find the social aspect interesting to watch as well.

For example, in the first episode, there was a minor storyline regarding Havers and her smoking, and she even smoked in the car! There was also references to the the girl (who looked much to old for her part in the episode) being overweight, and going to the ‘funny farm’. In the second episode, I’m sure they used the wood ‘poof’ . How life has changed in twenty-five years, although having a schoolboy suicide surprised me.

Yes!

He was so obssessive?

I really liked the Helen in the pilot & I think it was a mistake to cast a Helen who was so similar looking to his ex who he pined for!

Silverbirchleaf · 31/03/2026 22:04

I’m glad the Helen situation has been explained. I was confused as well.

I liked the series but have to say I find the actress (Sharon Small?) playing Havers off putting with her simpering kind of doe eyes at Linley. Prefer the new Havers in the updated series.

Agree the Helen storyline in the original series was confusing.
