I don’t usually watch EE early, but watched it this morning with a mince pie and a coffee (it’s Christmas, innit!😆)
The Barry actor got a nice plug for his Barryoke business in, didn’t he?
Wish we’d seen more of Pat.
I really like the young Phil & Grant, too. Young Phil especially is eerily good!
I actually really liked the take on dementia today. I usually hate dementia storylines on tv, in books etc - too painful, after seeing my grandmother’s decline years ago. But I thought this episode encapsulated so much about dementia from the ‘sufferer’s’ perspective - the mysterious way the past and present become jumbled and time stops making sense, the strange moments of clarity and then complete confusion, the outbursts of awful anger and fear but also those moments when they’re ’not here’ (where are they?).
I found it really poignant and quite beautiful, and I don’t say that often about good ol’ depressing Enders. I felt quite teary when Phil came round to the idea of a care home at the end. I even warmed to whispering Joo-leh.
On a lighter note - my main takeaway from today’s episode was a massive nostalgia for 1980s Christmases, especially the pubs! The excitement in the air, the tinsel and foil decorations, The Power of Love’ blasting at last orders, even the fag smoke .
I realise I have just written an essay on an EE episode. I’m definitely in holiday mode 🤣
