Tony, from Eastenders, who abused Whitney, for me.

He is Kev in Emmerdale now. No idea if he is a neerdowell there as well, but I cant see past my hatred for him for Whitney 🤷‍♀️

See also: Carlton Banks from The Fresh Prince - he will forever be associated with the Tom Jones dance.

The one who came to my mind is William Roache, who will be Ken Barlow in Corrie until his death, I fear.

Wasn’t that his ambition? to be Ken and only Ken for as long as possible and hold the record for longest running character on telly.

I liked his son, Linus, in the film ‘Priest’.

All Jennifer Coolidges roles are very type-casted.

But that's a massive shame because anyone who has met her in person will tell you she is sharp as a tack, so witty and funny in her own right, and can be an extremely serious and business minded person, who doesn't accept being objectified.

She's the complete opposite of her roles, and she's an amazing actress.

I always think of her in The White Lotus - fabulously bonkers but vulnerable - I was devastated when she was killed off in Series 2.

I have just seen Bryan Cranston in "All My Sons" in the West End and he was fantastic. I have never seen him in anything else before. He has a very distinguished stage career, when you read his resume.

I think this is the problem - an actor disappears from TV and film work and everyone assumes they are struggling to get work, while really they've simply moved sideways to stage work.

BankfieldForever · 27/11/2025 14:54

Has anyone mentioned (probably the most outstanding example of this) - Christopher Timothy as James Herriot?

Apparently he was originally auditioning for the part of Tristan but his agent insisted he accept only the lead and I’ve heard him say on interviews that he really regretted it as since then he’s only really done James Herriot related work, whereas Peter Davison went on to many varied roles.

He was too good at it 😔

Well, he didn't sound at all like Father Dougal, that's for sure, it was years ago now but I seemed to think it was an English accent at the time. I think also the fact that the two characters are poles apart in intellect etc didn't help either.

nope, it might have been a different Irish accent but it was deffo Irish

Matthew McFadyen was in this thing years ago called Secret Life where he played a convicted paedophile released from prison. He was so subtle and compelling that for a long time afterwards I got a bit of an uneasy feeling when I saw him in something else – luckily Tom Wambsgans has now shifted that.

I haven’t seen that but I’ve always found Matthew McFadyen incredibly creepy. He really ruined the 2005 ‘Pride and Prejudice’ for me, which is otherwise wonderful!

Even playing a Victorian sex worker in ‘From Hell’ Joanna Page was basically Stacey.

IMO, of course.

That doesn't surprise me. I think the only other thing I've seen her in is Love Actually and even then she's basically a toned down Stacey. She seems to be a lovely person on screen and off but I don't think she's got the range for an acting career.

I haven't watched soaps for eons but I sometimes wonder what happened to people who had been there for years (and let's face it, weren't the best actors) and then got sacked. Malandra Burrows from Emmerdale for example. Do they just get normal jobs like everyone else? That must feel weird to them after being on telly five nights a week for years.

I certainly don't think Coronation Street has got the longevity of another 30 or 40 years in it so I wonder what those actors who label themselves "the next Ken" (in other words we wouldn't get much other acting work so will just stay here forever) would do.

Suspect Keeley might have something to say about that 😆.

There was a nice interview with her in Good Housekeeping magazine a few months back. It was mostly about reprising Stacey for the finale of G&S but she also talked a lot about how she met her husband and for now seems very happy being a wife and mum and has other interests outside acting.

I don’t think we’ll see her much, if at all, from now on.

The actor who played Grumio in ‘Plebs’ -sheer comic genius but can’t imaging watching him on a serious role.

He has been in loads, brassic and Mr bigstuff

Catpiece · 27/11/2025 15:23

William Shatner as Captain Kirk

Idk…I’m sure I’ve seen him in a few unpleasant roles. There’s others like him - Peter Davison, Richard Briers spring to mind - who have a cosy image so it can work well when they’re the baddie in a detective show. The latter was very much not ‘Tom Good’ playing an evil college Master in Lewis.

Of course it’s Errol Flynn. I’m nearly 65; people of my generation watched a lot of ‘classic’ black and white films on Sunday afternoons when there was nothing else to do.
well… him or the fox in the Disney version. Grin

I was gonna say my Robin Hood is Kevin costner 🫣 then you reminded me of the Disney fox Robin, is it odd to fancy a cartoon animal? (Probably)
Loved that film.
"Little John and Robin walking through the forest....."
"Every town has its ups and downs....."-made me cry 😢

Costner? C’mon, he was out-acted by the late lamented sycamore tree. Alan Rickman’s Sheriff otoh….

Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham is quite frankly the only thing that film has going for it.

Of course Tim Curry in Rocky Horror. His career never recovered from that.

I always think about him being the Butler in film Clue - which apparently did come after Rocky Horror - he did have a varried career after but yes it is one of his ironic roles.

I couldn't work out why I always found Jared Harris unsettling - even in very friendly roles - and then re-saw something where he was playing a unsettling villian - David Robert Jones in Fringe on a re-watch- hadn't known the face enough then to put a name to recognised it before - but as soon as I realised and went oh - I found him very watchable in new roles.

GaIadriel · 27/11/2025 16:03

I remember somebody from one of the soaps (Eastenders?) being assaulted by a member of the public who had confused him with his character. 🤦This must've been a good decade ago.

Re Robin Hood, what about Michael Praed. . Swoon!
