Calling all detective drama fans! Channel 5 is continuing to build on its slate of must-watch shows and the latest one to add to your watchlist is Cooper and Fry.

The superb new detective series is based on the bestselling Stephen Booth novels and follows a pair of young, mismatched detectives, played by Downton Abbey (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a570356/downton-abbey-movie-release-date-cast-spoilers/)'s Robert James-Collier and Doctor Who's Mandip Gill.

The official synopsis continues: “As their personal lives begin to intertwine, a unique friendship begins to form… But it won’t always be easy.” Intriguing!

The show is set in the Peak District and will consist of four two-hour episodes, with each one based on an early book in the series, such as Black Dog (https://www.google.com/search?q=Black+Dog&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari&ved=2ahUKEwjD05--3OyQAxUnXEEAHWOOKFcQgK4QegYIAAgAEAc). The series follows the mismatched partnership of the two detectives as they solve crimes.

After a body is unearthed on a Derbyshire farm during renovations, DC Ben Cooper and DC Diane Fry are in a search for the truth.

Aided by DS Todd Eland and DI Paul Hitchens, the two detectives dig into the murky history of Tanglewood Farm.

James-Collier will play Ben Cooper, an affable local cop, who's thrown together with guarded newcomer Diane Fry (Gill) to investigate a series of strange deaths in the mystery-shrouded Peak District.

And while they might not immediately seem like a match made in heaven, an unlikely partnership forms, which could even blossom into friendship.

With the series set to arrive on Channel 5 this November, here’s everything you need to know about it, including the plot, cast, and release date.

Although little else has been revealed in terms of plot, we do know that the series will adapt four of Stephen Booth’s early novels including Black Dog, Dying to Sin, Blind to the Bones and Dancing with the Virgins. Currently, there are 18 Cooper and Fry novels – meaning that, excitingly, there’s plenty of scope for future series, too.

Robert James-Collier, who played polarising figure Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey (pictured above), takes on the role of Cooper. Meanwhile Mandip Gill, who played Yasmin Khan in Doctor Who and starred in Curfew, will star as Fry.

Gill has played a police role before, acting as a PC in mischievous sitcom Can You Keep a Secret? (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a61955479/dawn-french-can-you-keep-a-secret/) alongside Dawn French (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a39163318/dawn-french-interview/). Both co-stars cut their teeth in soaps, with James-Collier appearing in Coronation Street and Gill on Hollyoaks.

@Elizabethseymour if you ever watched Corrie, he played Liam Connor too. I think Liam Connor and Barrow are his most recognisable roles

I don’t watch Corrie either 🫣. I watch detective shows a lot.

PerriDowton · 21/11/2025 18:43

I was uncertain about this drama initially, but it's quite enjoyable to watch. I will continue to watch it, preferably during the day.

@Elizabethseymour watch him in Downton if you have time, he played a great role.

Just started to watch & it's annoying me already!

Everyone seems so hostile to Fry!

Presume "Barrel" was Cooper's Dad!

JewelleryCat · 25/11/2025 22:17

I bet those flowers that are left every year at the bridge saying always and forever are going to be a clue about his dads death

moto748e · 25/11/2025 22:27

Just finished the first one. Liked it, engaging enough. Bonus of watching on catch-up: no ads. Or next to no ads. Pressing on! 😀

I was really disappointed to find out that it was actually all filmed in Northern Ireland! NI is absolutely beautiful but I feel cheated out of the Peak District!

Clawdy · 27/11/2025 07:49

Oh no, didn’t know that! What a shame.

JewelleryCat · 27/11/2025 10:49

Is it NI? I read it was filmed around Dublin and Wicklow

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/11/2025 16:12

I thought the man with dog had something to do with it a she was insistent he went down the slope to where her body was then found

I did get side tracked so who was sam and why did he kill her

diddl · 27/11/2025 16:18

Sam used to be the gardener.

He got angry with Laura for smoking at the stone where he used to meet his late wife.

His dog bit Laura &she said she would have it put down.

So he hit her with his stick.

dontcallmelen · 27/11/2025 16:20

Flowers that were left at the remembrance definitely a clue I think, also don’t trust the detective with the man bun he is well dodgy, have Been enjoying it Yy the scenery is beautiful.

It might have been a bit more complicated but that was basically it!

Just caught up. This was really good. Like the partnership between Corrie bloke and Leeds girl. Like that there's a couple of ongoing mysteries, with his dad and her ex or whoever is after her. I like all the little references to the quaint superstitions too.

moto748e · 02/12/2025 17:38

I liked it too, but I fear they may be leaning a bit too much on the 'superstitious locals' angle.
