Calling all detective drama fans! Channel 5 is continuing to build on its slate of must-watch shows and the latest one to add to your watchlist is Cooper and Fry.

The superb new detective series is based on the bestselling Stephen Booth novels and follows a pair of young, mismatched detectives, played by Downton Abbey (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a570356/downton-abbey-movie-release-date-cast-spoilers/)'s Robert James-Collier and Doctor Who's Mandip Gill.

The official synopsis continues: “As their personal lives begin to intertwine, a unique friendship begins to form… But it won’t always be easy.” Intriguing!

The show is set in the Peak District and will consist of four two-hour episodes, with each one based on an early book in the series, such as Black Dog (https://www.google.com/search?q=Black+Dog&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari&ved=2ahUKEwjD05--3OyQAxUnXEEAHWOOKFcQgK4QegYIAAgAEAc). The series follows the mismatched partnership of the two detectives as they solve crimes.

After a body is unearthed on a Derbyshire farm during renovations, DC Ben Cooper and DC Diane Fry are in a search for the truth.

Aided by DS Todd Eland and DI Paul Hitchens, the two detectives dig into the murky history of Tanglewood Farm.

James-Collier will play Ben Cooper, an affable local cop, who's thrown together with guarded newcomer Diane Fry (Gill) to investigate a series of strange deaths in the mystery-shrouded Peak District.

And while they might not immediately seem like a match made in heaven, an unlikely partnership forms, which could even blossom into friendship.

With the series set to arrive on Channel 5 this November, here’s everything you need to know about it, including the plot, cast, and release date.

Although little else has been revealed in terms of plot, we do know that the series will adapt four of Stephen Booth’s early novels including Black Dog, Dying to Sin, Blind to the Bones and Dancing with the Virgins. Currently, there are 18 Cooper and Fry novels – meaning that, excitingly, there’s plenty of scope for future series, too.

Robert James-Collier, who played polarising figure Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey (pictured above), takes on the role of Cooper. Meanwhile Mandip Gill, who played Yasmin Khan in Doctor Who and starred in Curfew, will star as Fry.

Gill has played a police role before, acting as a PC in mischievous sitcom Can You Keep a Secret? (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a61955479/dawn-french-can-you-keep-a-secret/) alongside Dawn French (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a39163318/dawn-french-interview/). Both co-stars cut their teeth in soaps, with James-Collier appearing in Coronation Street and Gill on Hollyoaks.

So looking forward to this new series...big fan of Stephen booth ❤️

Perhaps you can tell me: has Stephen Booth stopped writing completely? His last book was a standalone published in 2019. I keep on checking, but there is nothing new.

I have checked on Google, but I can find nothing. His website still exists, but last I checked - nothing. I really enjoyed his books, but there seems to be nothing current about him. (I sound like a snoopy biddy.)

shellyleppard · 02/12/2025 19:37

@Tezza1 I've been wondering the same thing. The last book was some time ago. Unless it's because he's been working on the TV series??? I really enjoyed his stories though ❤️

I liked it too, but I fear they may be leaning a bit too much on the 'superstitious locals' angle.

Yes, I'm thinking that that might get a bit tedious.

E3 He’s on now

I think my fears were justified...

Any one notice the great number plate ?
The show is not bad, but not riveting......

moto748e · 02/12/2025 23:37

Some pretty terrible exposition this week!

I love the fact ch 5 dramas can’t be binged

…you may have mentioned the non-binging thing once or twice blondes.
You are entitled to your opinion, equally others have theirs!

moto748e · 03/12/2025 13:37

I'm sure you'll all be thrilled to hear that I tracked down the chanting:

Hal we þu Folde, fira modor

which translates to “Hail to you, Folde, Mother of men”

butterpuffed · 03/12/2025 14:55

That was quite good, but it dragged on a bit, could've been told in less time .

NewGirlInTown · 04/12/2025 01:04

I’ve given up on this now, it’s so boring. All the ingredients were in place for a watchable drama, and I love the leading man. However, the two main characters don’t work well together and I found myself thinking “oh I really don’t care what happens next…”
I have become a bit more ruthless in my TV choices!

diddl · 04/12/2025 20:49

Well I watched it to find out the who & why but I found the whole border rats thing ridiculous.

It's a bit Midsomer Murders but without any humour!

Oh totally

tho my threads are always non binge

so makes me laugh people post and then say I’ve watched them all

someone usually does a spoiler/binge thread

Are these episodes directly based on the books?

allmycats · 06/12/2025 09:45

I find it so obvious that it’s filmed in Ireland and not the Peak District. It’s the Irish registration plates on parked cars that you can pick out and the so obviously Irish street scenes. Having lived in Ireland and now living in the Peak District it stands out to the point of looking silly 😝.

I think that review nails it pretty well.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/12/2025 22:20

Yes. I did think the man had something to do with it who drove to the crime scene

tho as usual I need some explaining

why did the daughter not want to go back to the family and ran away for 5yrs

what did they do to her

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 08/12/2025 22:22

As in were they beating her up .too many accidents as a kid hence the hospital visits or more the dad and sexual abuse

OP posts:
diddl · 09/12/2025 08:37

It was the mum "punishing" the daughter because she'd had a difficult birth.

The dad did nothing to stop it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/12/2025 16:57

Thank you I should concentrate more

Episode four tonight and last one
