NormasArse · 07/11/2025 18:36

Eurovision- the year ABBA won. I was 8.

Justmuddlingalong · 07/11/2025 18:36

The Chilean miners rescue.

SwedishEdith · 07/11/2025 18:38

Portillo and, yes, the miners rescue but I'd forgotten about that one.

The Chilean miners rescue.

Yes! Also Scotland Curling in the Winter Olympics, must have been twenty years ago (2002?) and I had no interest in curling before or after

Comedycook · 07/11/2025 18:42

EU referendum

Loads of sporting events. The first one I remember was the LA Olympics in 1984. I stayed up into the night to watch Seb Coe, Daley Thompson etc win gold for GB. Then when England’s overseas test matches started to be shown on TV I regularly stayed up to watch my team get hammered in the Ashes.

I also happened to still be awake in the early hours of the morning on 31 Aug 1997, which meant I was one of the few people to see the live newsflash that Princess Diana had been involved in a car crash in Paris.

EuroTour · 07/11/2025 18:46

Davis vs Taylor 1985 🎱 and numerous other late night matches since then.

ZaZathecat · 07/11/2025 18:46

The moon landing. Well, technically I didn't stay up, my mum did and came and got me up in the night to watch

Bloozie · 07/11/2025 18:49

The obliteration of the Conservative Party at the last general election. I wanted to see my loathsome Tory MP’s reaction if/when he lost.

The insurrection on January 6.

Various boxing matches over the years.

Michael Jackson Thriller Video 😮

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe flying home to her family after being held in prison in Iran for 6 years on trumped up charges.

A few of us on MN watched her plane fly in to the RAF Brize Norton on Flight Tracker. Very moving.

I also stayed up for this nail biting final 40 years ago!!!

waltzingparrot · 07/11/2025 19:28

Remember staying up really late to watch Steve Redgrave win his fifth gold Olympic medal in Sydney.

Umanresources · 07/11/2025 20:11

The moon landing with my dad. I wish I'd remembered it more, but I was quite young. I do remember him saying that history was being made, but I wasn't that impressed! It was one of the few times we shared things. He died 2 years later. I'd love to have that night back again.

Anything politics and Eurovision for me

Andy Murray winning his first grand slam at the US Open in September 2012. Trouble is I was so pumped after such an epic match so I just stayed up all night and then had a very long and tiring day. Worth it though.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 07/11/2025 21:53

I'm very jealous of all the PP who stayed up to see the moon landing. It's the one thing in the last century that I really wish I had been alive to witness.

Stayed up to watch a Tube late night special, it was my first date with DH ( a friend set us up), my little sister was a chaperone/ gooseberry as he came round to my house.
Can’t remember much about the programme, didn’t have my glasses on in order to look alluring! I do remember that DH smelled nice, MIL used a lot of fabric softener!

Frannieisnthappy · 07/11/2025 22:17

Bolero, Torvill and Dean - 1984 I think. Was ice-skating mad

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/11/2025 22:18

Live Aid. (Both the Wembley part and the Philadelphia part). I've just googled and it finished just after 4am UK time.
