Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002lt9z

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

Yes, I know he did that, but how did he jump from knowing that to working out that Eadie and Robert were responsible for the boys' deaths? Did he know about the drugs and the corruption? Or was it just that it didn't make sense and he wanted her to explain it?

(Not that I care all that much, though! Lovely scenery but classic crime this was not.)

I think Edie told him when he went to see her with the whisky

I agree with a PP that the writing of this series was terrible.

And for the 2 lead characters, who happen to be women, were really let down. They were insubstantial, and virtually irrelevant.

And even though previously I thought it was as though they wanted to give Billy a much larger part as obviously we wont be seeing him again, it shouldn't have been at the expense of other characters.

I just about followed all the twists and turns until the actual killer was revealed, but apart from the fact that he had already been shown to be not very nice, why all that ritual nonsense with the ropes. And why would she just go along with it.

I think all of that theatrics actually went against it working as a plot it left you thinking why would Arthur Mair be someone who would indulge in them.

I suspect Ed is a sort of Duncan replacement, which is why it is so disappointing that the idiot writer made him and Ruth pair up. Even allowing for the shallow characterisation I think Ruth starting to challenge him was because she realised she was trapped. And he seemed to shape shift from weedy just getting by to be some sort of assertive macho bully.

But the fact that he sat by and did nothing to help (forgotten his name) the young man Ruth had press ganged into being an informer is the biggest mark against him being a remaining character.

Just hope as they have confirmed another series that they get rid of the writer of this series and that there is a better balance in terms of character development and back story for both Ruth and Tosh.

They were just left with 2 dimensional scenes.

(And no Sandy was NOT overacting. He always gets a bit carried away when put in a position of responsibililty!)

Not usual bothered by the clothes in Shetland, as others seem to be, but where from and who would wear the clothes that Ruth had on in some scenes?!

She needs to call in her character from Ugly Betty and get a make over.

A lot of it didn't seem relevant & I just rolled my eyes at Jess going into labour as they tried to get away & Isobel being there for the birth.

Batoutofhellish · 11/12/2025 20:02

How is Ruth still in a job? She is so breath takingly unprofessional in her behaviour. That police operation is a shambles. Her boss seems to do nothing but appear for the odd briefing. He’s also a terrible actor.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 11/12/2025 20:30

Well I hope both Billy and Sandy (and the nice young pc who looked after Cassie a few seasons ago) go off and work with Perez and the BBC and new writers write a new show for them.

Can't believe they ruined Billy. I'll never forgive them for that.

musicinspring1 · 11/12/2025 22:54

This series made me quite pleased for Sandy - he came across as the best policeman in the station and I felt ridiculously proud of him 😂

Yes! It was like that time when I re-watched them all and I realised there was a period of time when Perez had slunk off and Tosh would have been on maternity leave.

So I suggested Sandy must have been left in charge.

Everyone was very rude about him.

Which isn't very nice!

Honestly, Sandy looked relatively switched on and competent only because the rest of them are so bad at their jobs!

Also are there no solicitors on Shetland? Not coming to any interviews...?

diddl · 12/12/2025 07:28

I wonder if the chap who plays Billy doesn't want to be in it anymore or just wants a break from the next series?

Perhaps he'll be back at some point after an investigation & a slap on the wrist?

Or no wrongdoing found?

Clawdy · 12/12/2025 08:16

Still wondering why Eadie was spelt like that!

Ha I thought that, clearly not 🤦‍♀️😂

The bloke who I’m assuming was Ruth and Toshs boss just giving a blank look when Ruth said she’d slept with Ed 🙄 surely she’s have been suspended for that!!!

StewkeyBlue · 12/12/2025 08:45

I thought Ruth and Tosh grappling with their consciences was ok: Ruth because she knew she was responsible for what happened to Louden and Tosh over Billy.

And Ruth’s own slip ups meant she was prepared to let Billy’s slide.

I cannot see how in RL a DI would have been allowed or gone in to speak on the demand of an arrested suspect. (When he told her about seeing the boat etc)

That’s what I thought too!

He’s not their boss; he’s the Procurator Fiscal - independent of the police.

NorWouldTilly · 12/12/2025 09:02

Oh dear, I love the PF! He clearly thinks both Tosh and Ruth are hopeless - but it wouldn’t be professional to say so. He’s a breath of fresh air in a world of unbelievable silliness.

apremoiledeluge · 12/12/2025 09:12

It's not easy watching this programme with a former police officer! There's so much they're doing that's wrong apparently. I keep telling him to suspend his disbelief but even I get annoyed at some of the unprofessional behaviour. Looking at you, Ruth!

Garamousalata · 12/12/2025 09:37

Not only is Sandy the best policeman in Shetland, he’s actually an authentic Shetlander!

JewelleryCat · 12/12/2025 09:40

Is the actor playing Billy leaving then and that was why the story about his boss being corrupt?

I’m like that when watching The Split. Dh won’t watch it with me anymore 😁

I thought that. But he finishes on a low ☹️🙄

Peregrina · 12/12/2025 16:00

Maybe he'll be brought back for one episode where we find out that he's been cleared of wrongdoing, but decides to retire anyway.

I suggested this a while ago. Suddenly Billy gets this big speaking part when normally he is just making cups of tea or sending our for fish and chips.

And in giving him this dominance, it has made other bits look really inadequately fleshed out.

Even if that is the reason, the writers of this series are the ones to blame.

Not just the plot lines, but given it is a long running series to not bother to make the core characters believable.

Lets hope they get a decent script writer for the next series and both Ruth's and Tosh's agents put in a few demands.

Forget about what clothes they wear.

Give them some decent lines.

The thing about Billy reporting himself to standards also made me wonder if, by doing so, he implicates Tosh and Utter Tosh as well - given that they had worked out what happened, taken ages to think about it, and then decided not to take it any further. Surely they have a duty to report and although it's admirable that Billy has reported himself, he's only done so because he was found out, and could the finder outers be in trouble for not reporting immediately?

nb I have no idea how any of this works in real life, can you tell?

moto748e · 12/12/2025 17:11

Yes, surely, questions will be asked of the senior officers, Tosh and Ruth.
