Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002lt9z

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

Duncan has moved to the vicinity of a Highland castle where he divides his time between crofting and being a retained firefighter. He chats to visitors from the West Midlands of England who have come on holiday by mistake and the younger female one now has a massive crush on him, entirely understandably.

[This will only make sense if you listen to The Archers. Apols.]

Hmm, I fell asleep again during episode 5. This did not happen when I watched the series with Jimmy Perez in them.

Me too

Well it does all seem to be pointing to Ed now!

What really pissed me off was everyone talking about Jess's baby as if she has no choice in what happens.

For such a small community they don't half get involved in stuff like that but seemingly know fuck all about drug smuggling going on under their noses-perhaps for 20yrs!

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 05/12/2025 20:33

Can't believe they ruined Billy. Absolutely awful from the writers.

There's too much Tosh shouting in this episode too.

And surely Ruth getting together with a victim's relative is inappropriate conduct.

Pl242 · 06/12/2025 08:15

We still have one episode to go so I don’t think Ed can be the murderer. Definitely more likely for him to have been involved in drugs but I reckon historically, not currently? Ie. He and his brother were in on it the first time, but he stopped after that. Robert found out through Billy. Told Eadie. Ed confessed and distanced himself but then Robert took on the drugs money. Eadie knew/found out later but didn’t touch the money as it was wrong? There has to be something on videos nosey neighbour is taking that will be revealed? Still more to come from him re his own mother and why her and Eadie fell out?

NorWouldTilly · 06/12/2025 08:29

Wasn’t there a bit of hide-behind-your-sofa-music around Nosy Neighbour Colin? To the extent that I felt quite worried about Ruth’s safety when she visited him. And wasn’t he the one who discovered the body?

He’s in on it - mark my words.

diddl · 06/12/2025 08:54

Was Colin the name that Lewis Mitchell gave up?

Although that would mean he scuppered his own deal with the couple?

Unless LM was sidelining him?

Surely the videos must be relevant?

Unless he's well off, what is he doing for money?

Candypatthongworn · 06/12/2025 12:52

Yep fell asleep here too
despite my earlier protests that I was out on episode 3 I stuck around but oh dear it’s bad .
Surely this will be the last series ?

DontStopMe · 06/12/2025 12:58

It's quite depressing how bad it has got. I'm starting to wonder if the most likely outcome is that they'll all get sacked for being useless and/or corrupt and that'll be the end of the series.

I agree, it's too soon and too obvious.
I'm still suspicious of Colin the neighbour. And Isabel. I don't know which I think is the murderer, or if it's either of them or if they're just implicated in another way.

Isobel definitely has an unhealthy obsession with her teenage daughter’s baby.

Pl242 · 07/12/2025 13:52

Sudden thought. Maybe Isobel was in early stage of pregnancy when the boat went down. Father was Ed or his brother? Edie had something to do with baby being put up for adoption?

IAmKerplunk · 07/12/2025 13:55

I’ve only watched this season. Do you need to watch from season 1? As in is there a theme running through it or are they stand alone seasons? If not which are the best seasons to watch?

I binge watched from the start recently. I would highly recommend!

Isabel certainly seems a bit over-invested in the new baby, even given that she seems to have nothing much in her life beyond standing about gloomily in her kitchen.

FoxRedPuppy · 07/12/2025 15:00

Btw the Scottish spelling is Isobel. Which if she’s the murderer isn’t that important 😂

NewAgeNewMe · 07/12/2025 15:05

I think it’s Isobel as murderer. Too well known an actress to be a bit player imo.

Yes, excellent point

That’s a good theory! She did say rather pointedly in this episode that her life went downhill after the storm, maybe not only because her brother died?

That would make sense.

I was thinking it was because Jess as spoken to Eadie about adoption-which makes less/no sense!

deeahgwitch · 07/12/2025 16:59

I agree Isobel is very invested in this new baby. If it were me I would rather my daughter had a chance to enjoy her young life without being saddled with a wee baby to look after.

Each series has its own story line and for a small area Shetland seems to have a large number of families who hate each other and murders happen.

The theme is any was or is the lead detectives, and certainly in the earlier series had their own story lines which did develop.

Some of us have been unhappy that since the lead detectives became women, the writers haven't bothered to give them interesting back stories let alone decent lines!

Thank you - watched S1 today and enjoyed it.

Now really want someone who lives on Shetland or similar to start an AMA as have lots of questions about life up there

Breathmiller · 09/12/2025 18:29

Coming in late to this as we have just binged up to now. Looking forward to the reveal tomorrow.

I was thinking that if it is Ed the Very Grey Poet who killed his mum AND is the KingPin drug dealer, why would he keep the drug pick up deal with the holiday couple? Tosh & co keep going on about how the deal was being done there because it was a quiet place and could be done discretely. But that it went awry when Eadie (McReadie) was killed and there were police everywhere. If he killed his mum then he would have changed the drug deal, surely?

And if thats the case then can it be the same person who killed Eadie (McReadie) and also was the drug dealer?
