I can't find a thread for this Confused. Surely there is one? Can anybody point me towards it?

The tin of paint was brilliant.

Anyone else shout “mousetrap!” ?

BIWI · 18/10/2025 22:17

Yes!

spiderlight · 18/10/2025 22:58

We did too! It was such a great ending to the episode - the pink paint was 👌

The mayor's chief went to try to convince him that the son was off-limits in his speech, I think.

StartupRepair · 18/10/2025 23:18

I'm so ruined by binge watching that weekly drops confuse me. I forget everything between episodes. Agree that River is a bit flat, hopeless and angry in this season.

CurrentHun · 19/10/2025 07:15

I find the wisecracky insults going around their office in general a bit silly because people don’t really talk like that in constant banter.. but I also love watching the series, I like all of the female characters and the male ones are mostly interesting, but I think maybe it’s more complex writing that it seems at first watch.

I had written off Roddy for example as just a total one dimensional caricature before this series and now he’s being shown to have a private life, an inner life, and a slightly different maybe closer relationship with Lamb than the rest of them.

And there are great shots of real recognisable places in the moody looking cityscapes and fun realistic details. They get their supplies for their crap offfice party from the crap little supermarket next to their workplace etc. I binge-watched the previous series after getting Apple TV so of course now it’s feeling like hard going to have to wait a week each time. I really enjoy it though. I haven’t read the books.

Daisymay8 · 19/10/2025 07:24

I feel it's not as subtle as the previous - I had to struggle to work out what was going on - DH suggested it is slowed /dummed down a bit for US / non english speaking audiences .

PuppyMonkey · 19/10/2025 07:33

That paint can ending though, I gasped!

BIWI · 19/10/2025 08:05

@CurrentHun the books are really, really worth reading. Mick Herron’s writing is superb.

NormalAuntFanny · 19/10/2025 10:56

I thought this weeks was a bit meh although the killing of Gimbal was very funny, I had completely forgotten what happened.

I don't think River is particularly changed but has been the hero more in the TV than the books whereas this season is more of an ensemble.

Still looking forward to the finale!

I’ve just finished reading my first Mick Herron from the library - Down Cemetery Road. I now see it has been made into a series. Must admit I found it quite hard going and had to push myself to finish it. I’d like to read the first in the Slow Horses series to see how I get on with it - they had some of the later ones in the library but I didn’t want to borrow those as I didn’t want any spoilers for future series!!

PuzzlingRecluse · 19/10/2025 16:59

I love slow horses but I’m struggling with the weekly episodes - I’ll need to go back to rewatch once they are all released

BIWI · 19/10/2025 21:49

@chimichangaz definitely start with the first of the Slow Horses books. They are better than his other series.

chimichangaz · 20/10/2025 07:46

Thanks @BIWI - I found one on Vinted and have bought it, should arrive this week.

PacificState · 20/10/2025 07:54

I’ve got a theory that Jack Lowden (River) was unavailable for a lot of this series - the extended lockdown scene in Slough House, it seemed obvious that he and Gary Oldman were not on set at the same time (lots of cutaways, Lowden being filmed by himself at the window). Once you spot it, it feels like the whole series has been working around Lowden having commitments elsewhere and it’s affecting the dynamic, which is a bit of a shame. Plus Morwenna Banks doesn’t seem to have writing credits on this one (unless I’ve missed it) and she’s the special sauce IMO.

Still better than most things on TV, and I love Saskia Reeves as Catherine.

stanleycups · 20/10/2025 21:14

Ooh a good spot Pacific I’m going to look out for that now. I also thought he looked like he’d had a glow up, as the Gen Z’s say.

The actor playing Claude is brilliant, I think he’s underrated.

PacificState · 21/10/2025 09:15

Yes, James Callis is absolutely fabulous. Comic flair but also just good, sells all of his lines brilliantly. The performances are almost all top-notch.

chimichangaz · 21/10/2025 21:15

I’ve just started rewatching season 1 and noticed the character of Greg Simmonds is played by Christopher Villiers who plays Dennis Gimbal. Simmonds is also a far right politician. Seems odd to have the same actor play two different characters in different seasons?

Sunnydayj · 21/10/2025 22:54

I've got very mixed feelings about the series, having read all the books and loved them. Some of the casting is brilliant especially Saskia Reeves, Kristen Scott Thomas and Christopher Chung. Gary Oldman as Lamb is growing on me but he needs to be more slovenly!
The acting as a whole is great. Shirley is much more present in the books than in the series so far so I hope that develops.
I do not like the alterations to the story lines and cannot understand why some were necessary eg characters changing sex for no apparent reason.
I suppose I wish I'd seen the series before reading the books.
Oh, and J K .Coes backstory is in the book Nobody Walks. I won't spoil it...

I actually work right next to this place. The shop is a small Tesco metro, which works well as River comes back with bags of Tesco supplies for the party. The Italian restaurant is really there although it is closing down. The solicitor firm above the restaurant is also real.

Serpentstooth · 22/10/2025 08:14

Not watching till I can watch the lot over a couple of days. I've been ruined by streaming. One episode a week annoys me. But I'm looking forward to it.

Perfidia · 22/10/2025 13:02

This wasn’t my favourite of the novels (apart from the brilliant opening chapter) but today’s was the best TV episode of the current series. Finally some actual intrigue!

EerieDecoration · 22/10/2025 13:11

I'm loving it and loved the books too, yes it's a bit different but that's inevitable and I don't think it has actually strayed that far from the book. The previous season was my favourite of the books but the most disappointing TV season, this one is back on top form for me. I'd like a bit more of Lamb and Taverner sparring, but otherwise no complaints.

Yourmywifenow · 22/10/2025 15:28

I’m embarrassed to admit that I get James Callis (Battlestar Galactic)and Alexander Siddig(Deep Space Nine) mixed up!

blobby10 · 22/10/2025 15:43

I've just read the last of the books and wasn't sure whether to watch S5 after reading some of the comments!! I enjoyed S1-4 and thought it kept pretty close to the books, and that most of the casting is spot on.

Put James Callis looks like in Google.

Just watched the latest one. I won't say anything in case people haven't watched.
