New police drama to start on Friday

Set on the border between North and mainland Ireland and featuring mismatched detectives who somehow create a formidable crime-fighting partnership, think of it like True Detective with an Irish twist.

Created and written by Cold Feet writer John Forte and starring Line of Duty (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a62800629/line-of-duty-series-7/)’s Amy De Bhrún, the premise is a particularly strong one.

The series introduces us to prim Northern Irish detective inspector Philip Boyd (Eoin Macken) and his sweary counterpart from the Republic of Ireland Aoife Regan (De Bhrún), who find themselves partnered up on a brutal murder case.

Forced to put their differences aside, they collaborate to solve a crime that straddles the border keeping them apart.

the six-part series follows an (at first glance) ill-suited detective pair working across the Irish border to solve a murder mystery.

Straitlaced detective inspector Philip Boyd (Eoin Macken) of North Ireland finds himself working alongside his foul-mouthed Republic of Ireland counterpart, detective inspector Aoife Regan (Amy De Bhrún).

The pair are opposites with clashing personalities and backgrounds, but although neither of them are happy about the partnership, the two must put their personal and professional differences aside to solve the brutal cases of victims along the border.

The cast of Borderline includes:
• Eoin Macken as Detective Inspector Philip Boyd
• Amy De Bhrún as Detective Inspector Aoife Regan
• Lochlann O'Mearain as Jack Mullen
• Hugh O'Connor as CS James Casey
• Charlotte Bradley as CS Flynn
• Sophie Vavasseur as Aisling
• Craig McGinlay as Rev Adam
• Ciaran McMahon as Captain
• Amy Malloy as Lottie Mullen
• Paul Reid as DC Maguire
• Siobhan O'Kelly as Roise Boyd
• Barry John Kinsella as Ian Walsh
• Sarah Carroll as Roisin
• Jack Hickey as Sean
• Adam Walker-Kavanagh as Garda Brady

Yes – the series originally aired on MGM+ in 2024 and has also been snapped up by Apple TV+. Viewers have called it “an amazing crime drama”, with some describing it as True Detective meets The Bridge.

Thanks to its brilliant mismatched detective storyline - a staple of all great crime dramas

Just seen a trailer for this. Might be similar to blue lights

Thank you for the recommendation - look forward to this

deeahgwitch · 01/10/2025 15:36

Thank you @Blondeshavemorefunfor the headsup 💐
Unfortunately Virgin Media don’t give us ITV in Ireland feckers
We did have it, as UTV (Ulster Tele Vision ) years ago. Not anymore. ☹️
We will get to watch in a few weeks or months time. But I will place mark on this thread and read it when the show airs here.

Such a con as you are in Ireland @deeahgwitch

Start tonight episode one.

Not sure if it would be similar to blue lights or totally different and more like Hope Street

starts now

Borderline sees members of Northern Ireland's Police Service and the Republic of Ireland's Garda Síochána have to come together after a body is discovered on the borderline of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Detective inspector Philip Boyd leads Northern Ireland's police, while detective inspector Aoife Regan is his Republic of Ireland counterpart.

The duo are forced to put their differences aside and collaborate to solve a crime after a woman's body is found on a beach. Initial suspicions suggest she may have been murdered in the Republic and drifted across the border.

The cast of Borderline is led by Eoin Macken, playing Philip Boyd, and Amy De Bhrún, portraying Aoife Regan.
Eoin is known for playing Gavin Cluxton in Fair City as well as DR TC Callahan in The Night Shift and Davis Collins in Ransom Canyon. Meanwhile, viewers will recognise Amy as Abigail Whithall in Sanctuary or Niamh Furlong in Blackshore, and she also played Steph Corbett in Line of Duty.

Starring alongside the pair in Borderline is also Lochlann O’Mearain as Jack Mullen, Hugh O’Connor as CS James Casey, Charlotte Bradley as CS Flynn, Sophie Vavasseur as Aisling, and Craig McGinlay as Rev Adam.
Ciaran McMahon plays Captain and Amy Malloy portrays Lottie Mullen while Paul Reid is DC Maguire and Siobhan O'Kelly plays Roise Boyd.
Rounding off the cast is Barry John Kinsella as Ian Walsh, Sarah Carroll as Roisin, Jack Hickey as Sean and Adam Walker-Kavanagh as Garda Brady.

I'm liking this so far!

Peachy2005 · 03/10/2025 21:25

Just watching it now, definitely not like Blue Lights. It feels a bit like a cozy mystery, maybe it’s just the way it’s filmed. I think Eoin Macken has been in the US too long (I normally quite like him in US dramas) - his American accent keeps breaking through. Apart from the slightly foul-mouthed southerner, not finding much of interest…but hopefully it will improve!

Edited to add: seems Eoin M. is actually a Dub so maybe that explains the accent slippage

TennisWithDeborah · 03/10/2025 21:31

Reminiscent of The Bridge (Sweden/Denmark), The Tunnel (GB/France), or Der Pass (Austria/Germany). And there was one set on the US/Mex border I think.

Looking forward to giving this one a whirl.

Peachy2005 · 03/10/2025 21:34

Is Drumbay supposed to be Ballyshannon? I’m confused on the geography.

Rictasmorticia · 03/10/2025 21:41

Anyone finding the dialogue really clunky. So many rude people makes it a bit unbelievable.

tennissquare · 03/10/2025 21:50

It’s got an actor from Blue Lights in it - Joe / Fogerty (Charlie Maher ) - this is going to confuse me as watching both at the moment!

JewelleryCat · 03/10/2025 21:59

Just going to watch this now, it sounds good

onceuponatimeinneverland · 03/10/2025 22:05

I thought it had all been dubbed from maybe Irish. As dialogue felt off and unnatural.

There seems to be loads of red herrings, boyfriend (which if the hens is he having any affair with?) , sleazy taxi driver, drug dealing landlord, weird mum with obvious secrets. Not to mention the past of the two detectives

tennissquare · 03/10/2025 22:12

It’s a 2 parter so episodes 3 and 5 will be new story lines.

Peachy2005 · 04/10/2025 00:03

Oh maybe Drumbay is supposed to be Carlingford: that might make more geographic sense and it looks more like it.

I’m curious why Detective Regan has a gun: garda detectives can be armed in special circumstances but it’s not the norm and I don’t think this investigation would meet the criteria. Maybe they mentioned it but I missed it, or just dramatic licence.

JewelleryCat · 04/10/2025 00:16

I liked it but I thought everyone was weird and creepy plus everyone is hiding something

Peachy2005 · 04/10/2025 04:37

Have unfollowed the Blue Lights thread as saw a snippet where someone said “thought this was supposed to be tv pace”. Did someone actually post spoilers or does anyone know is it safe to go back there? Obviously don’t go looking in the thread if you haven’t seen already, in case there are spoilers.

I don’t watch blue lights but if blondes did the thread like she did this one then they’re always a tv pace no spoiler thread. It’s not fair when someone tries to spoil it

Edited

They made a few references to the borders not having normal rules - no idea if this might make a difference to the gun rule?

It just references the one post before, which is a general comment about how the series felt, no actual spoilers about storylines.

I too hate it when someone ignores blondes shouty 😉 no spoilers.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/10/2025 11:45
