This is our tenth anniversary of sharing our thoughts on Our Girl series one and have subsequently watched the other three series, followed by Soldier Soldier, The Musketeers, Spooks and Hustle so thought it was time to try something different. Please join us and share your thoughts if you have ever been a fan of Downton Abbey. We are currently on series four, episode eight.

Isabel intends to marry Lord Merton.

eejittwo · 24/09/2025 21:41

Mabel and Mary are well-matched.

Rhubarb01 · 24/09/2025 21:42

Imagine taking part in a horse race while riding side saddle.

Ilovelblue · 24/09/2025 21:42

Isabel is going to accept Lord Merton's proposal.

Edith and Marigold set up home in a hotel.

Ilovelblue · 24/09/2025 21:47

How will Edith fare in a hotel with nobody to wait on her hand and foot?

Indeed, and with a toddler too.

Rhubarb01 · 24/09/2025 21:49

Well, that's all for this week, folks! Nothing resolved and yet more problems to be faced and overcome.

Magi84 · 24/09/2025 21:51

No, I haven't seen it yet. Hopefully, tomorrow. The person I was going with was poorly last week, so fingers crossed it will all work out tomorrow.

Rhubarb01 · 25/09/2025 22:55

I have now seen the film and as promised, I will give my thoughts, without hopefully giving away any spoilers!

It was very much like an extra long episode of Downton, although if it had been a regular series, I could have imagined the stories being played out over six or seven episodes. I think this is definitely the end of Downton - at least the end of stories which focus on all the main characters we know - I still think there's scope for a new series in the future based on the next generation of Sybbie, George and Marigold as adults. Whilst talking about the children, given our attention to detail, I did think they looked a bit too old. It's 1930 and Sybbie shouldn't be any older than 10 and the others younger. The staff, with the exception of Andy, Daisy and Anna, all looked as though they should be drawing their pensions Grin. The passage of time was a theme here and there were lots of nods and references to past stories - the Turkish reference raised a laugh in the cinema. I liked that, for once, Mary needed to call on Edith to help her out, although I did think it was a bit easy/lazy to just have Edith sort one problem out by effectively telling someone, "I'm very posh and I'll make life difficult for you." The costumes were lovely as always. Everyone gets a happy ending, with neat solutions - loved the little scenes in the end credits - but yes, the final moments did get to me when Mary remembers all those things from the past - it was a fitting end and this time definitely the end, I think.

Evening, all ready for episode 7.

Ilovelblue · 01/10/2025 20:59

I'm here and just reading your review of the film!

I totally agree with all you say. I really snivelled at the end. I think I knew I would and I didn't disappoint.

As for the children, I didn't even realise who Sybbie was at first. She looked far too old compared with how she had been at the end of series 6.

So glad you enjoyed it. It really was the end, sad to say.
