Kit's dress really stood out so think he deserved GOTW. I thought Gaynor would go home. I didn't like the frayed edges.

placemats · 26/08/2025 22:02

So that was a great outfit from Kit on the m2m and I'd wear it but not made with paper. Oh Gaynor's was lovely but the colours and the fraying, agree that was a mistake.

Stuart has been in too long and he's been lucky to get this far.

There’s nothing grim about Grayson Perry, is there?

children's cancer charity event.

they couldn't have picked someone less shady? Barbra Hepworth?

Being a bit dead might have prevented her from turning up....

Amazing sculptor though.

i meant as inspo. Or Clarice Cliff.

He makes interesting pots. That is crafts. I am firm on that. I won't give Gill the time of day either, to be fair, and he was a monster who belonged behind bars.

As for the sewing? Kit's m2m was fab, loved it. Would deffo make it out of stiff chinz and wear it.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/08/2025 22:09

Oooh, I'm not an experience dressmaker but I have made that style of sleeve in the pattern challenge. Fibre Mood Gabby dress uses that method and it's great, much more comfortable to wear than an elasticated puff sleeve. It wasn't all that hard but I wasn't under any time pressure.

ShoAndSew · 26/08/2025 22:11

it's a very good technique, also for the new puffball skirts. Back in the 80s they had a sort of stretchy sleeve inside (the skirts) that was horrible and warm

Whoops, yes, agree, a Hepworth inspiration could have worked.

Go back and read the whole of my comment and your reply. You seem to be deliberately misunderstanding what I said so there's no point in derailing the thread any further. Carry on pretending that we agree if it makes you happy.

I really enjoyed this week. I know that a puffy sleeve and peter pan collar isn't for everyone but I'm a fan and have made a few tops with that look , i've atached a pic of a top I wear all of the time that I made from a duvet cover.. They all did such a good job , but Stuart not matching side seams of the skirt was a terrible error.

Caz's dress was so cool. I used to play with those paper dolls with tabs as a kid , what an amazing idea for a human sized outfit.

I agree with who was sent home. His fabric read impressionism rather than pop art and just didn't have the 50s/60s vibe from the shape. He did so well though. Tough competition there!

Me: Perry has stated that he actively wanted to involve others in his fetish - getting the response from members of the public was what he wanted.

You: I wouldn't want to be involved, thanks. But maybe some people would?

I’m not misunderstanding anything.

I’m off to visit a friend tomorrow who is making me a made to measure dress as a birthday present. She is an amazing sewer and I’m excited for it. I can’t sew and she can’t bake. I’m taking over homemade biscuits.

I'm impressed!!

I used to play with the dolls too, my mum used to draw dresses for me to my spec with tabs until I was competent enough to do it myself. I hadn't thought of that for years.

I'm sure your biscuits are fab, but you got the sweet end of that deal!

I loved those too.

Loved the Bunty. If I was ever on Desert Island Discs I'd have all the Bunty comics plus a pair of scissors with my luxury being a sewing machine and fabric/haberdashery.

Castlerigg · 26/08/2025 22:45

Orla did some good work today, I really like her.

I think Gaynor expected to go home, and I susect she’d have been quite happy with that. It was a tough call between her and Stuart. I really liked the style of his m2m dress, but agree it didn’t fit the brief. Or the model, unfortunately.

I used to love those paper tab dolls!! I actually used to draw my own dolls whenever we got a bit of cardboard I could use, and I’d design loads of different outfits, and my sister and I would play with them 😊

thought I was a regular Coco Chanel 🤣

Shall we speculate on challenges for movie week? (did they show these? not sure)

Pattern Challenge
Gingham pinafore a la Dorothy in Wizard of Oz?
A 50s satin jacket like the Pink Ladies in Grease?
A flight suit / jumpsuit thing a la Top Gun?

Transformation
Lycra / Superhero costumes
School uniform (Matilda, any number of other movies)

BestIsWest · 26/08/2025 23:00

Transformation - based on the clips I’m guessing it was to make something from velvet curtains like Scarlett o’Hara did in Gone with the Wind.

TheMadGardener · 26/08/2025 23:05

I wondered if the Transformation clip which looked like everyone had red velvet curtains was either a nod to the curtains which used to open in front of cinema screens, or to red carpet film premieres?

It looked like the made to measure was a horror film costume?

Oh I know. They are good biscuits but I am very well aware that I’m the winner here.

A jumpsuit would make a great m2m challenge, as it could potentially encompass waist, hip, and bust adjustments, as well as torso length.

I can never wear them, or one-piece swimsuits, because I’m long in the torso. They would be uncomfortable and unsightly!

Sausagenbacon · 27/08/2025 06:00

About the gathering in the 1st challenge.
I've seen a lot of insta clips where the technique is to put shirring elastic in the bobbin reel.
Has anyone tried this?
