With only five posts left on the old thread, thought I'd start this so we can link between the two.

This thread carries on from the first:

I just read one where he said he’s given up his job to set up his own business as the village handyman

Oh yes, I read that one too. Wonder if he left work, went travelling with his mum (as I think they've been travelling together), then set up his business.

Well, I like all the contestants and find them all interesting in different ways. I enjoy hearing their back stories, seeing their enthusiasm, their struggles, the awe and wonder of their individual journeys too.

I don't like some of the character assassinations that I read on MN- remember all these people have families and friends. They have put themselves forward for this challenge to entertain us not to be called names/attacked. Be kind and enjoy the RATW conversation.

I don't think I've called anyone names but if people put themselves forward to be on TV in a show that, this year anyway, puts so much emphasis on backstories then they should be prepared for comments. Particularly if they are being economical with the truth.

Agree
and we get to watch people travelling across some wonderful countries and beautiful landscapes.

First and foremost though

It is a Race

I noticed that last night when she said it I was shocked! I would say having horses and enough time to train them and practice and compete is quite a bit of “me time”!

I just feel that maybe she only got to do all the horsey stuff when it suited her husband.

So, yes, she’s had success at it but only when she wasn’t having to be the perfect old-style housewife (dinner parties for his clients, social events to help him climb the ladder etc).

I get the impression he will very much have insisted on being her No. 1 focus, pretty much told her what she had to do, and this may well have eroded her confidence despite being a successful horsewoman (if your success is unpaid and considered ‘a little hobby’ by a successful, high earning husband this can happen).

Maybe I’m projecting a bit, but I can identify with having what seems like the luxury of being a SAHM, when in face it’s soul destroying for much of the time. It can be a gilded cage.

ILoveBrum · 08/06/2025 20:54

That seems like a massive projection @SociableAtWork - there’s been no indication of any of that.

You’re pretty much saying she’s a victim of coercive control. I don’t see that at all. If your post reflects your own situation, then I hope you find a way out of what sounds like an unhealthy relationship.

If you read the article on P15, Caroline is a farmer’s wife. So unlikely to be doing many dinner parties for her husband’s clients or social events.

WaitingRoomBoredom · 08/06/2025 21:30

I really like this programme because I love vicarious travelling but this series has been way too much talking about relationships at the expense of real travel stuff.

I actually have no idea where they usually ate or slept the whole series and this is a huge part of travelling.

I'd also like to know how they managed in China with only cash.

I probably am projecting - and I did finally leave my own situation, thank you (and thank God!). Back then, coercive control wasn’t really identified.

I wasn’t meaning to speak badly about Caroline - or her husband - just offering an alternative view of the ‘I’m just a housewife’ narrative.

No offence intended and I hope none taken.

Companies House lists him as a barrister. Either way, you’d be unlikely to be inviting your clients to dinner.

Her husband's company was named in the Paradise/Pandora papers leaks.

He's as much a farmer as she is a housewife.

So Caroline's husband is a barrister and a farmer?

ILoveBrum · 08/06/2025 22:19

What’s the Paradise / Pandoras papers @TwentyKittens?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/06/2025 23:40

Completely different topic, but is anyone else surprised we haven't seen much to do with cricket? One shot on the intro to Mumbai I think, but nobody has done a related job or activity.

Sioned seems to have got the hang of India now, I think it was a baptism of fire in the initial very busy cities! I noticed she was wearing Loop earplugs in one episode which I thought was a good idea, take the edge of the traffic and all the honking a bit. Where they are now seems more relaxed.

I think Caroline loved it from the beginning, she seems energised by all the hustle and bustle.

I haven’t seen anything about him being a farmer

While we're talking about poshness, every time I hear Caroline say 'oh golly' or 'oh golly gosh' I can't help laughing 😆

I sound incredibly ‘posh’ and use similar terms but was brought up working class with a labourer and cleaner for parents and my parents and ancestors way back where also dirt poor in Ireland.
No idea why I sound the way I do, my cousin sounds the same.

We really shouldn’t judge based on accents and words.

Edited

In the same way as Jeremy Clarkson is a farmer you mean?

ThatsNotMyTeen · 09/06/2025 09:26

I found Melvyn and Brian quite smug this week. They really weren’t expecting to come last. I don’t really get the love for them on here. I mean they’re OK, but I clearly don’t see what some of you see in them.

Caroline and Tom for the win for me!

Fin and Sioned don’t have a healthy budget left do they

Caroline describes herself as a farmer's wife in an article in Horse and Hound.

I didn't notice the Loops, I wonder if she brought them with her, or if they either managed to source some, or even if the medic team 'prescribed' them.

Finn is a resilient strong young man who has the biggest backstory of all. I dont think he would play ball with production. He has rarely mentioned his struggles and past. When he did there was no drama just some factual information. He should be proud of himself.
If I compare Finn to the youngest sister who appears to be dramatic and difficult. She manipulates Elizabeth and has a victim complex. She lost a family home. This is less traumatic than Finns cancer battle and having diabetes particularly throughout the race. It is less traumatic than having CP
This brings us to Tom. As others have said his CP is mentioned as a sort of afterthought in a later episode. We'd had to endure Letitias 'battle' for weeks at this stage.
I don't think he would open up to production. His own mother was shocked when he told the weavers he has CP. We don't know how his CP affects him as he's not said much. I think he's a lovely young man and the dynamic between him and his mum is one of mutual respect and care.
Like Finn Tom does not make a fuss. He is calm and reflective when talking to production. He should be proud if himself.
Then we have Caroline. Yes production may have asked her questions over and over again but they cannot make her say certain things. I don't think she struggles with confidence. She talks a lot about herself almost as though she is playing a role to a certain extent. We know she says she was raised to just get on with it. I think that's the real Caroline. Tough, tenacious and fiercly ocompetitive. I dont think she would do anything she didn't want to do. She appears to lead a privileged lifestyle. Production could have portrayed her as a resilient 60 year old who had to focus on a child with additional needs as a older mother and how that affected her. This narrative would have gained her a lot more empathy. She has a lovely relationship with her son but I believe that's the only genuine Caroline we see as she is acting the rest of the time. Her constant gushing over everything is draining and comes across as disingenuous. She appears to have no self awareness either.
I don't think production decides how to portrayed the cast until after filming. They may have a plan but this will be subject to change I think the reason we haven't heard the end of Caroline and Letitias woes is because both young boys didn't give them the footage they expected and wanted alongside Yin and Gaz leaving early.
Finn and Tom to win!

Yes - very privileged people like Caroline can’t see their privilege.

WingsofRain · 09/06/2025 12:18

Yes - very privileged people like Caroline can’t see their privilege.

But how do you know Caroline can't see her privilege? Granted, she hasn't mentioned this, but TV producers construct a narrative- Caroline may well have then said something like, I recognise how lucky I have been, but it's been cut.

I think Caroline's narrative has done her any favours btw.
