Hello all
I couldn't see another thread but it looks like this starts on Thursday 10th April.

What will be the themes this year? Banquettets aplenty? Grumpy contestants coming on to the thread to tell us off for not being kind? Hideous colour combinations?

Who know what joys await us!

Rita’s dress is a bit OTT for the round up!

I always wonder what they are told to wear for the judging and if they get a budget for clothes because the choices are bizarre. From fancy summer wedding guest, to glitzy formal night out to picnic or night at the pub.
And they wear the same outfit every week for the tasks.
I thought Johns judging outfit was channeling divorced dad on a date with a younger woman 🥴.

FagsMagsandBags · 02/05/2025 12:17

I didn't concentrate much on the show last night because I found it pretty dull. I was prepared to be hugely annoyed by Sue because she's everywhere at the moment but I appreciated that she knew what she was talking about when it came to dogs which meant that we learned that most of them, but especially Bradley, had listened to what they were told the dogs needed and then done what they wanted.

Craig won because it was fun but the best thing he put in was the door which was a practical learning experience for the dog. Yes, the pop art was fun but it was also a decade ago. John has size issues. Every week he goes too big or too small. He's a nice chap but he'll be gone this week if he can't sort that out. Rita's blackboard was too big but the idea wasn't bad. Somewhere for staff to leave notes about the dog. She was trying to think of the dog and training but I've forgotten too much of her design to say how successful she was. Victoria (?) was a bit too corporate and if she'd softened the designs she would have been a contender to win because throughout she thought about the dog, photos and videos, the colours. I didn't particularly like her design but I was impressed with her work. Bryony same as Rita, forgot a lot of it immediately after seeing it but loved her wallpaper of dead dogs and "still dead". Bradley created a thing that had nothing to do with the brief.

Alan is divorced and the flirting with Craig was uncomfortable and enough of that thank you! And I get why Craig won but I'd have been more impressed if he'd pared it down blue and yellow. It still would have worked but it would have shown he was thinking about the dogs more than his, this is Pop art and have you heard of Keith Haring? Aren't I clever!

CoastalCalm · 01/05/2025 22:04

I’m surprised Bradley lasted this long tbh

I thought Sue Perkins was a great judge- she was informed and engaged.
Normally the guest judge is more like a nodding dog to Michelle.

Rictasmorticia · 02/05/2025 15:33

I don’t think any of them gave much thought to how the room would be used. Low sofas toy and training storage would have been a must. Plus an extra big bed as an alternative to the crate. There The only good thing this week was the door.

Bruisername · 02/05/2025 15:37

Victoria had a low sofa

i I think it was a very broad brief because they said a home environment but also training so I think it gave them a lot of wiggle room.

I think that’s why Craig’s worked because he had a good mix. The colours and style were clearly for the human eye but why not

I thought Rita got away lightly and they glossed over her room and didn’t give it much airtime. As Michelle said, what is the blackboard for

Victoriawould24 · 02/05/2025 16:56

I agree @Bruisernameabout Rita one minute they were saying her bed slide thing was too steep and the top bit was not right and then it cut to them saying ‘this room is brilliant’ .
I was glad Bradley went but I did think it was a bit tight Sue going into the psychology of digs possible responses to certain things, how would amateur designers know about that.
Why don’t they ever (other than shop week) get the client to judge who ultimately would know better than Michelle or a random guest how practical a room is.

FagsMagsandBags · 02/05/2025 17:24

@Victoriawould24 they were given a briefing on colour, what dogs need, etc before they got started otherwise I'd have been far less picky about what they presented.

I also hold my hand up to having taken against Craig. His smile is getting on my hollow, shrunken tits and I seriously did not enjoy the flirting between him and Alan. I know it's not cheaty - as in keeping him on the show, if it's relationship cheaty then none of my business but I don't like it.

This makes me keener on Rita because I see more original thought in her, though failings too of course. And I like Victoria, quietly figuring out where to go, loved her bedroom mural, she's not the best at all but I'm enjoying her quiet little journey.

At least we get to see something better next week. I love dogs, but design for dogs not so much.

Bruisername · 02/05/2025 17:32

I don’t like to judge them on their personality because I don’t think it’s very fair. Annoying people can also be talented!!

i feel like each series there is someone Michelle takes a shine to early on and then they can do no wrong.

I'm not a fan of Sue Perkins but I thought she did a good job. I agree Bradley should have gone but I thought the bench comment was weird as surely the bench wasn’t necessarily for use while dog in crate

Giggorata · 04/05/2025 08:33

I enjoyed the pop art in Craig's room and felt that it was fun for the humans, inexpensive and with items that are easily replaced if chewed.
It included some good ideas for training the dogs, with the door and a table and chairs, as well as a crate that was made into more of a refuge for the dogs, with a roof.
I enjoy doing my interior decor, but I wouldn't have had a clue about such a difficult space and unusual brief..

8dateslater · 04/05/2025 09:00

I really liked this episode. We have rescue dogs so it was really easy to see gaping flaws in their designs.
It was a good challenge of how do you have an intensely practical design that's also stylish.

The pot plants perilously perched on the barrels was a clear design over actual function choice. Equally people who filled the room with stuff and completely lost floor space.

I really liked the cooperate style one, and would probably have designed something like that myself if forced

However I did really love Craig's. It showed where a designer can think outside the box a bit, but while maintaining the utility.

It had the wipe clean sofa, sturdy dining set, practice front door, sheltered crate which are all massive plusses for me, and is possibly the most practical out of all of them, but with the most clear style. I felt like my other favourite room (the corporate one) I've seen before.

Eh me and my wife immediately commented on the staring at dog in crate thing

The crates for us were a fairly obvious part of the design (and were the one thing battersea had given them as an essential) and it's a fairly obvious first step to make it more secluded, but also to consider how the crate might be used. Maybe it's a dog person thing but if it was any other design where one only item was left as an essential you'd give some priority to that item.

Having the crate in front of the sofa also made the sofa slightly usable because there was no real space in front of it (like the table that a dog couldn't walk round).

The crate would be in there to either teach relaxation, separation anxiety or to be a quiet hideaway and the placement of Bradley's crate meant it was none of them, the only places to sit was in full view of the crate I think.

I actually thought John's was the biggest crime, he just completely plonked it in untouched i think. A few of the others made a vague attempt at draping a blanket over it.

Bruisername · 04/05/2025 09:22

I get what you mean on the crate but I just don’t think the intention was for someone to sit on the bench when the dog was in the crate. He just squished furniture in and hadn’t really thought about it. He clearly isn’t a dog person.

I also wondered whether the crate isn’t permanent either. My dog wouldn’t like such a big crate so do they change them around depending on the size of the dog?

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 04/05/2025 16:26

Loved Craig’s, agree Bradley has deffo overstayed his welcome his room was so dull.

i personally love Sue and think she would have been a perfect host for the love of dogs.

FagsMagsandBags · 05/05/2025 22:24

I know it's wrong to judge people on their personality and I mea culpa the heck out of my opinions because I know that it makes me less fair than I should be, but try as I might I can't help it. Craig annoys me, Byrony doesn't as much but neither does she fill me with "Ooh, I love her!" I quite like Rita because she's smiley, but so is Craig so why does he annoy me? None of it's logical, it's all subjective and I think I let my subjectivity vere between, I like what you do, ergo I like you. To, you like what you do too much therefore you're getting on my tits. I'm a contrary mare at times.

I didn't dislike Craig's pop art but it is very passe and the way Michelle was raging about it you'd think that no one had thought of it since Aha back in the day. I actually thought the front door was the best part of his design because I could see how useful that would be for help in training the dog because oh my days we all know how much of an annoyance dogs can be with front doors, even when they haven't been faced with any trauma like a lot of those dogs will have been.

I was impressed with Victoria because she clearly could have gone more all out but chose not to because she was focussed entirely on the dog and what the room could do for them, especially with photography and I know as someone who looks at the photos we get of dogs and cats it makes a difference. Better photgraphs mean that dog/cat will get chosen more quickly. I wasn't surprised that her name was the one chosen immediately after Craig's because she really had thought it through and I was glad that there was a Sue who could big it up from the more corporate nature of the design because she saw that it was done for the dog.

The crate thing was definitely an issue. They're a pretty new thing to me although I know they're not as recent as I suspect but even ten or so years ago I wasn't seeing them, but my best friend's most recent rescue, five years ago, had a crate at the start of his life with them. She no longer has it because it became less necessary. But I do get how they can be incredibly helpful and if I knew I was encorporating one into a design I would be really sure to find out the whys and wherefores. In this instance I would say getting the crate right is as important as your ability to arrange a kitchen to use it to its best utlility or the size and placement of sofas in a living room, a bed in a bedroom. It's not an afterthought, it's important to how the room works for an animal who may well be traumatised. It's about safety and comfort and all of the stuff that good furniture is for people.

My biggest opinion about Victoria so far is she reminds me of Clare Grogan which is a nice thing, but mostly I'm enjoying how she seems to be going under the radar, not because she's not doing good work but because others are getting more screentime, and bringing something a little different and a little more interesting each week. Maybe she's my favourite at this point but I don't really know. She's definitely not obvious and she learns by her errors each week.

Bruisername · 05/05/2025 22:38

Agree that Victoria is the dark horse

I don’t think the pop art was innovative but perhaps it was in that space

FagsMagsandBags · 05/05/2025 22:39

I'm sorry that whenever I post I do go on a lot. I've no one else to talk to about it and I "talk" too much. I just love reading what you've all got to say too and it's nice to talk about a show where people know what they're talking about with not too much snark. I'd no more expect my snark about Craig to be taken seriously than, er, not sure! I think the flirting this week didn't help, I'm still uncomfortable with that and it's not a man/man thing. I don't like it when I see it on any talent type show because it hints at cheating even though I'm sure there is no cheating at all - I mean in the show, not bedroom shenanigans!

As with most of us, I'm not unhappy to see Bradley leave. I think he's been out of his depth since the first week and only stayed in last week because Victoria did such a good job.

You can come and sit in the ‘back shop’ with me and chat about it. Careful of the wall of crisps, mind.

Bruisername · 05/05/2025 22:44

Alan Carr makes me want to switch off. The innuendo is horribly cringe

FagsMagsandBags · 05/05/2025 23:47

I liked Alan when he was first doing it, but I think he undermines the show now. I get that they want a bit of humour but thenthey should get a bit of humour because most of the stuff now isn't even a little bit funny.

Netaporter · 06/05/2025 22:13

Sneak peek for this week’s episode which is on FRIDAY not Thursday due to VE Day.

Plenty of double entendres as the lads and lasses have decamped to Twickenham so it’s all about funny shaped balls…of course it is!

Cockernee Bryony is now in full flow, Craig however, is in danger of disappearing up his own self-important arse with his ‘Rothko inspired colour fields’ (aka some cheap canvas’ purloined from The Works daubed with a 2inch paint brush dipped into a dulux heritage range tester pot). We’ve no heads up as yet as to the antics of wannabe Joiner John, the young Claire Grogan or Rita…

See you for duty on Friday!

FagsMagsandBags · 07/05/2025 01:36

Oh do not mess with Rothko! Because 1. Rothko and 2. Anyone who thinks it's just a matter of colour ways etc, doesn't get it. I wish I could somehow "copy" him but the man was a genius. And Marmite. And 3. Marmite. You love him, Craig has fucked it unless he's bought a print, probably an exhibition print. Not cheap. Because? People who hate Rothko will hate it. People who love Rothko will hate it.

Thanks for the Friday heads up. Also boo to waiting another day!

FagsMagsandBags · 07/05/2025 01:39

Yeah, this is not the week I suddenly fall in love with Craig's vision. Or Craig.

FagsMagsandBags · 07/05/2025 01:42

I think Bryony has done a decent job on the papier mache rugby 🏉 balls and Alan's tongue was unnecessary and you could see she was a little pissed off with him.
