I love teenagers, and their generosity and openness is so heartwarming.

So far!

I would hate to go squirrel hunting!

9 when he killed his first deer

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 21:40

So alien

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 21:47

'christianity is really like a hating religion'

That's really sad

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 21:49

Wow a list of banned books 😳

And out of curiosity why is Stephen King banned?

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 21:58

She stays up until 5 in the morning at the weekend

Wow

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 21:59

His bucket list is killing different animals 😞

sorechalfonts · 23/03/2025 22:22

@purpleme12
Absolutely got genuinely bad vibes from him even through the TV

sorechalfonts · 23/03/2025 22:24

@purpleme12
and Harry Potter is banned because its ’witchcraft’

but perfectly acceptable to kill innocent animals for ‘fun ‘

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 22:36

So do they just not teach RE at all in America then?

Fictionreader100 · 23/03/2025 22:43

Squirrel killing is quite common here ( Cumbria )
as we still have areas of red squirrels so the greys are shot to protect the reds .
Even seen grey squirrel on the menu in restaurants & butchers occasionally !

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 22:43

At the end when Waylon's host dad was saying it's so nice to see Waylon relaxing at the beach and it'll be sad to see him go (or some such like) and the host mum gave a look to the camera and to me, it came across that she didn't feel that way

I don't know if it was supposed to come across that way

sorechalfonts · 23/03/2025 22:51

@purpleme12 I expect she is worried about the pet snake or any other family pets

CarrieOnComplaining · 25/03/2025 20:58

Oh my!

”Mr Johnson with his ProudDad Face””

Those tearful boys….

Confess I didn't like all the emphasis on getting a date for the prom, girls dancing/boys playing football - felt like an 80s brat pack movie...

Some really heartfelt moments from the kids though.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 25/03/2025 21:14

I thought the earlier episodes were excellent though.

aliceinawonderland · 26/03/2025 09:02

I’ve only watched the first episode, but I did feel sorry for Sailor…aged 15, 4000 miles away from home and her host “mother” challenging her on the attitudes of her town, which were not her own attitudes.

Rollercoaster1920 · 26/03/2025 09:32

To me the show really highlights the difference between ignorance and racism (or any other ism). I think that as a society we should be much kinder to the former, because they don't know what they don't know. And often accidentally come across as the latter, even though their core values are not whatever -ism they are.

aliceinawonderland · 26/03/2025 09:48

@Rollercoaster1920
Although clearly the Elmgreen kids have also experienced racism in diverse south London as the teacher explained they have had to build a protective shell around themselves.

AdoraBell · 26/03/2025 09:51

Haven’t watched it yet, I’ll catch up soon.

I agree, I didn’t like that scene either and I thought it was unnecessarily hostile

Yes I found that depressing.

Yes she was a typical "right on" type of person, but actually not accepting of others at all and certainly not "kind". The American host families come across as far more welcoming and non judgmental, whereas I would have expected the reverse to be true.

In terms of Christianity too, it was clear that one of the London boys who went to America had an extremely religious mother and background, so it's not just an "American" thing

aliceinawonderland · 26/03/2025 12:49

I agree it's an odd concept for a young boy to go out killing, but Waylon's hosts point out that he eats what he catches. So it's no different from us in the UK who eat meat. Waylon's hosts (who are a lovely couple) enjoy a "roast" every Sunday. Maybe we're just hypocrites because we get other people to kill the animals for us.

OrlandointheWilderness · 26/03/2025 15:32

They should’ve sent Weylon into a rural English area. We shoot deer and a wide variety of game, we have guns. Only difference between us and buying cheap meat in Tesco is the middleman. Ours is free range, local meat that is butchered and processed at home with respect and used to feed the family. No different to the millions of meat eaters in the uk, just a little more aware of the bit most people prefer to be un sanitised and shielded from.

but aren’t teenagers bloody lovely!

claudiaswinklemen · 26/03/2025 19:47

This was brilliant tv. Everything about it perfect channel 4, British telly.

I noticed the home coming was 2023. Has anyone spotted any updates on how the participants are doing?
