I love teenagers, and their generosity and openness is so heartwarming.

So far!

I really felt for Jayla saying she didn't want to leave the UK.

Pclements85 · 18/03/2025 21:52

I'm really enjoying the show

Why do you think the English students are wearing the school uniform while in America.

Really Hope jaylah returns home with her new confidence and absorbs the culture we have to offer her.

Wylan is wild
He's like a fish out of water in a city and think he's out of comfort zone in a place where education and other cultures exist as he's closed off to other things

Carouselfish · 18/03/2025 22:03

Yes
Why the fuck choose a school in a sundowner town?? Seems so risky, needlessly so.
Sadly there are parts of America that think ending slavery was a bad thing.
My dad used to sing in a church band and their keyboardist was black. When they toured, there were churches that simply refused to have them because of this. Talking 10-15 years ago.

Just caught a bit of the start of this. Wondering if this would be appropriate for a quite naive 11 year old?

My child is white and we live in a very ethnically mixed area. But I feel my child is very unaware of the barriers some of their peers may have. I feel they are too scared to even bring it up with their friends, as of course these things are discussed at school (i.e. during black history month). Just wondering if it would be insightful?

Definitely appropriate. My children have found it really interesting.

I agree. We were saying that if the purpose was to experience US school Vs UK school they should have exchanged with a similar sort of school. An inner-city school in NYC or DC would do have been an interesting learning opportunity, but without putting the children from London in a situation where they were forced to face direct racism in such an unapologetic and confrontational way.

BarMonaco · 18/03/2025 22:46

I think the programme makers picked the schools they did to create more drama

CarrieOnComplaining · 19/03/2025 11:37

I think they have been careful to pick American families and students that do not typify Bible belt sundowner Arkansas. It was obviously a horrible experience for the black students to hear the language - but also interesting that the students D-J was with immediately rallied round and apologised that he heard such a thing.

For both lots of students the extreme culture difference is the eye opener and transformative experience. D-J on the boat etc. Waylon in Brixton Market. Lots of S London students have never been N of the river, never mind rural farming area. Sailor's eyes are being widened, culturally and philosophically...

I am interested that they keep focussing on Brixton in the filming - the Elmgreen catchment doesn't really stretch into central Brixton, it's a Tulse Hill / Streatham Hill / West Norwood / West Dulwich / Herne Hill school. But Brixton gives the whole extreme urban vibe.

Meanwhile Sailor is being treated as if she might be racist / homophobic. You could see her heart plummet when her host revealed her own preconceptions of Arkansas.

I don't think shes necessarily racist or homophobic but she's been brought up in a place which breeds racism and the strong connection to religion means she been told it's wrong in the eyes of the lord to be anything other than a white straight person.

Much like alot of so called racists in this country it's poor education and lack of cultural integration that encourages this outlook.

I think for south London children they polar opposite of their lifes is Somewhere like Arkansas. Mixing with Inner city Americans would be similar to the life and cultures they are familiar with if swapped with NYC teens.

Like those kids in last night's episode fascinated by wylans outlook and ownership of weapons. These kids are in London and don't see Guns often unless spoken in a gang setting. Gun safety and education is very important.

Pclements85 · 19/03/2025 11:53

Lillies addiction to her phone is so sad but it's a real thing I think alot of children have in this country.

When I was younger we were told to get off the streets and be seen and not heard.
Modern technology and gaming devices have achieved what alot of adults and parents wanted. The children to be quiet and out of the way. But we need to let children grow and learn.

Let teenagers sit in the park or by the river.
Encourage teens to be active and play sports and develop into young adults.

Rollercoaster1920 · 19/03/2025 14:49

Waylon is a gem. The time he went up the tree in the park was a brilliant piece of someone looking at the world differently. His preference for countryside is being re-enforced, and that is OK. The teens are having very different experiences because they are very different people.

The second episode has a lot about communication. Phone addiction, not feeling confident enough to say to the host family that you don't like something. All very interesting.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/03/2025 18:10

Love Waylon, he’s such a personality. They focus on him a lot more than the others though

Butteredtoast55 · 20/03/2025 18:22

I felt so protective towards them after the first episode that I couldn't watch the second. I was worried about the culture shock and the kids being bullied - they're such lovely children, especially the two lads from Brixton who were so sweet. I need to get on and watch it!

BarMonaco · 20/03/2025 18:30

I like Waylon too. I think all the kids they've picked are nice. I like Dae-Jaun. I liked that the English family took Waylon to do shooting in Kent and seeing Dae-jaun in the boat on the lake. He's appreciative and laughs at the dad's jokes.
I thought the english kids responded well to being told they'd been cheeky and on their phones too much. They were apologetic and tried to improve.

crackofdoom · 20/03/2025 18:33

Oneearringlost · 12/03/2025 08:28

Oh, yes! I noticed that straightaway, Waylon's contraction of the word "racoon"...it was interesting that it was most probably, an entirely innocent use of the word, and/or normal vernacular for the area he comes from. So is it just 'dialect ', or is it an indication of being blind to the casual racial speech and slurs, that is normal for that part of the world?

I think that it is specifically an English slur, very Alf Garnett kind of era. They have "coonhounds" in the US, which are thankfully for hunting raccoons.

Hmmm yes, it feels as if the black kids have been deliberately dropped in a bit of a hostile situation because it makes good TV 😬

wizzywig · 20/03/2025 20:31

I'm halfway through watching this, I'm hoping lily learns to iive without her phone

sorechalfonts · 23/03/2025 11:41

I had to FFWD the animal shooting parts. Waylon wanting to go to Canada only so he shoot a Moose to cross off his list of animals he wants to kill I found disturbing.

sorechalfonts · 23/03/2025 11:42

purpleme12 · 11/03/2025 22:50

How has he never gone on an escalator before!

He’s too busy killing animals

claudiaswinklemen · 23/03/2025 15:40

Lily's rudeness with the phone is quite difficult to watch.

claudiaswinklemen · 23/03/2025 17:07

Aww, she came good in the end. What an amazing experience for all of them.

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 21:28

He's got students who monitor livestock on their phones?!

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 21:34

Something a bit disturbing listening to him (Waylon?) list all the guns he's got at home

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 21:35

20 😱

purpleme12 · 23/03/2025 21:36

Don't like the way he talks about killing this squirrel either
