6 part drama. On sun and mon x3w at 9pm itv

ITV has released the first trailer for its new six-part drama, Protection (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/protection-itv-first-look-exclusive-newsupdate/)
, starring Siobhan Finneran, Nadine Marshall and Katherine Kelly.

The upcoming thriller series has been described as "what happens when the clandestine and morally grey witness protection system breaks down".

The gripping trailer sees a man with a gun enter a home to kill members of a family before the police and ambulance arrive as its revealed they've been in witness protection.

I'm neck deep in it," Finneran's character can be heard saying before she is told by Ace Bhatti's character: "Then keep your head down and your mouth shut."

The trailer ends with the chilling words: "Don't trust anyone..."

The synopsis reads: "Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (Finneran) – a single mum, juggling a difficult divorce and a sick father – finds herself at the heart of a security breach within her witness protection unit.

"Professionally compromised by a secret affair with a colleague, she is determined to uncover the true source of corruption within the police.

"Liz will stop at nothing to redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses and her own family safe. Even if it means breaking all the rules."

Telling the story of "a tough but increasingly isolated and under suspicion police officer as she is pulled into a dangerous conspiracy where nothing is as it seems", the six-parter is inspired by a real-life witness protection officer who served as a consultant on the series.

It’s about a police officer, Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (Siobhan Finneran), who finds herself at the heart of such a breach; personally compromised by an affair with a colleague, but determined to fight back, and uncover the true source of corruption within her unit.

To redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses safe. Even if they don’t always deserve it.

"Navigating the morally-grey, clandestine world of witness protection, Liz’s mission to find the truth will take her deep into the heart of the criminal underbelly and beyond as she becomes more and more torn between caring for her family, her loyalty to her lover and her duty as a police officer." We're already hooked!

Police officer DI Liz Nyles works in the secretive and high-stakes world of Witness Protection.

When we meet her, she’s juggling a challenging front-line job (with life and death consequences for her witnesses) alongside a demanding family life – attending to the needs of a teenage daughter, a difficult ex, and a dad recovering from a stroke.

"Liz is principled, in control, and scrupulous about the security of her witnesses, particularly the high-risk criminal turned informant Jimmy McLennan and his family.

Jimmy is about to testify against his old boss Eddie Crowther, the head of a major organised crime group which has so far evaded prosecution.

As with all those under her protection, Liz goes above and beyond to keep Jimmy’s family safe, working with colleague DS Raj Kohli to keep their whereabouts strictly hidden.

I usually binge. I can't be bothered to with this series. I love Siobhan F, but it's generally pretty frightful, from the plot to the wig, to the cars

CrossPurposes · 26/03/2025 12:29

The stunt woman's blonde wig was very reminiscent of SMG's stunt woman in Buffy.

Also, I think it's funny that we are supposed to be on Liz's side versus Wheatley when Wheatley is clearly in the right about Liz's dodginess and incompetence.

E5 tonight

who do we beleive and trust in

No one at the moment 😀

mum2jakie · 30/03/2025 21:49

This is so farfetched. As if any senior officer would put themselves in that position. If she had retrieved the phone, the sensible thing to do would be to destroy it!!

friendlycat · 30/03/2025 21:50

Of course it’s far fetched and a bit ludicrous. But I’m rather enjoying it 😀

mum2jakie · 30/03/2025 21:51

She's been suspended and she's still doing home bloody visits!!

friendlycat · 30/03/2025 22:04

Crickey. That took a twist.

mum2jakie · 30/03/2025 22:06

I thought he was a goner but that was unexpectedly brutal. Wonder how the final episode will play out.

She's been suspended and she's still doing home bloody visits!!

Yes, why did she think it would be ok to go to see Amy’s nan and do a police custody visit to Edward - she’d never have been allowed in!

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/03/2025 22:08

Didn't like the ending of that. I looked away. I still can't watch hanging after finding dh

I'm hoping he will be found in e6 and revived but guess not

Again amazes me that no one ever follows her to find amy

Paul was def shagging her to find out where Amy was

But sounds like that Eddie wasn't the killer behind of amys parents and more to it Finally they know about the iPad tho amazed Jasmine didn't try and track it when knew was gone

And it's all the mystery man Gibson

Recap said Patrick at the end helped kill him

Is he a copper so bent ? Couldn't place him

I missed a bit, how did she know Amy was at her nan's? Why didn't they look there in the first place. Also, confronting lover's wife and confessing to affair, massively selfish imo. Wife prob had suspicions anyway. Confessing usually only benefits the confessee.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2025 11:02

Coz her dad said grandparents get trusted with secrets - ie her daughter tells him not her mum

and in e1 she was trying to run to her

agree why tell wife and destroy her happy thoughts of dead hubby

OP posts:
duc748 · 31/03/2025 11:18

Yeah the confession scene seemed a bit pointless. I tihnk it i was only in there to hammer home the 'Liz is a complete fuck-up' mesaage. She spemt half the ep saying, "I've made mistakes"!

Does seem crazy to be in witness protection so close to grandparents and surely as someone else said would've been the first place they'd check.

duc748 · 31/03/2025 11:38

That bail and suspension Liz was supposed to be getting (with immediate effect, you'd have thought) seemed to be quietly forgotten about when she visited Crowther and generally carried on being a copper.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2025 12:14

Def silly so close and local

Papergirl1968 · 31/03/2025 14:51

Think Liz had to go and see the wife again for the purpose of the plot, so wife could reveal the army friend’s real name and that he works for the intelligence service .

From that photo that just happened to be sitting there on the kitchen table! Yes, I'm sure you're right, but it's lazy plotting again. Despite the strong cast, this just isn't really very well written.

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/03/2025 16:23

Yeah, we rolled our eyes on the photos on the kitchen table!

It's quite astonishing really that scripts like this get made into prime time TV dramas. I'm very encouraged for DD who wants to get into script writing, it's obviously not THAT difficult Grin.

butterpuffed · 31/03/2025 16:26

So Liz , after being suspended and told to go home , just carried on as usual 😅

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2025 18:00

Ah true @Papergirl1968. You are on the ball this series
