My parents are staying for a few weeks and trying to find us something to watch of an evening is proving difficult.
We all like crime/thriller dramas but it seems we’ve watched different ones so everything I suggest they’ve already watched and vice versa.
My dad doesn’t like anything too emotions based eg we tried Apple Cider Vinegar and that didn’t work.
if it’s on bbc or itv they’ve probably watched it.
They also don’t like anything with loads of swearing or sex - occasional plot driven is fine.
also needs to not be a slow burn and capture them quite quickly.
Also doesn’t help that it usually takes them 10-15 mins to realise they watched something!

Elementary

(A modern day Shelock Homes adaptation with Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu). Loads of episodes, it's brilliant.

How about black dove on Netflix

WhatTheFuk · 11/03/2025 03:10

Lupin (French with subtitles)
The Queen's Gambit
Both on Netflix. We enjoyed these as a multigenerational watch.

Fridayfeeling77 · 11/03/2025 03:17

Search Harlan Coban on Netflix any of these are usually a pretty good watch. DH has just watched the Bay and Unforgotten.

Martin Clunes was in a drama set in Wales which was quite good called Out there.

It's old (from 2010) but I've just started Accused on Prime and I'm hooked. Each episode is a different story.

Thank you for suggesting this. It's amazing! Just finished S2 which I watched on ITVX

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/03/2025 07:55

@PastyMuncher no way! I only started on Sunday morning and I'm on the last episode of the first series. My stupid job and kids are holding me up!

So far, the taxi driver episode has been my favourite. Which is yours?

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 12/03/2025 07:57

You could go really safe with Grantchester ITV? Easy watch.
prime target on Apple TV

PastyMuncher · 12/03/2025 08:00

@FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee my husband is away so I've really been able to focus 😂 thought the soldier one set in Afghanistan was amazing - harrowing but so good

Can't believe I've never seen it

Elsbeth is very light but good fun. A spin-off from The Good Wife – she was one of the supporting characters and is a quirky and seemingly ditzy lawyer, but who at crucial moments turns out to be very clever and astute. They’re only about half an hour long. It is quite formulaic if you watch more than a couple on the trot, but I quite like them because they’re kind of comforting and entertaining. It reminds me a little bit of Columbo.
And how about Annika? Possibly a bit sweary – it's a while since I watched them, so I can't remember – but they're also quite cosy but gripping, quite funny.
Thinking of Nicola Walker also reminds me of Last Tango in Halifax; not crime, obviously, and possibly a bit too emotional for your dad? but it's quite absorbing, good characters and nice scenery.

Whitechapel

Good storylines /no sex scenes
Steve Pemberton
Rupert Penry Jones

We watch it every year in our house Grin
DD and DH loved Slow Horses

DD loved Grantchester (but I think James Norton was the lure )

Oh, Grantchester was good in the early days. Went off the boil IMO when James Norton was still in it but (I got the impression) they ran out of books to adapt and had to come up with original stories.

Playing Nice on ITVX

PollyCreo · 12/03/2025 20:44

I feel your pain OP, my parents stayed with me for a month last year and it was difficult picking something appropriate! wirh no sex scenes

My dad enjoyed Annika (I think he likes Nicola walker lol) and also Blue Lights - bit too gory for me but he's from that part of the world...

Coffeeishot · 13/03/2025 09:22

Was Blue Lights set in .Northern ireland? If it's the one I'm thinking of series 1 was better than series 2 which was just bland.

Coffeeishot · 13/03/2025 09:23

We enjoyed Anika you can't go wrong with Nicola walker can you ?

Manchesterbythesea · 13/03/2025 09:26

pyewatchet · 09/03/2025 19:53

Only Murders in the Building, if you have Disney.

Only Murders is brilliant.

It's more sci-fi/dystopia but Silo on Apple TV has had me absolutely gripped.

Mackenzie Crook was the Lance Corporal - brilliant but harrowing episode .

TonTonMacoute · 13/03/2025 18:45

On Apple TV we enjoyed The New Look (about Dior and Chanel, their rivalry during and after the war) Masters of the Air about the American bomber crews stationed in Britain, Prime Target, sort of conspiracy thriller, and Tehran which is a tense spy thriller set in Iran. Someone mentioned Hijack, which is also good.

My current favourite is Jack Irish, Australian drama about a down at heel lawyer keeps getting dragged into various mysteries, good stories but with lots of lighter moments. It's on the Channel 4 app.

RedRiverShore5 · 13/03/2025 19:43

The Whitstable Pearl, I think it is on U.
