Anyone seen both seasons of The Diplomate on Netflix?

It's so brilliant.

Anyone want to talk about how well-written it is?

It was so good! Except why did she make that choice - aagh??!! Don’t want to spoil anything if anyone (with superhuman willpower) somehow hasn’t binged it. When is next series due (need it yesterday)?

Sleeposaurus · 21/10/2025 21:59

Yes what was she thinking? And what was denniston thinking? Didn't like the new man- there was no chemistry.

I find myself annoyed at American shows that do 24 episodes a year and only half are any good, but in this case I am finding 8 episodes infuriatingly short.

RyanFudgingMurphy · 21/10/2025 22:01

Loved S1 & S2. I don’t know if I’m just tired and menopausal, but I didn’t like S3 as much.

If I was married to Hal I would have kicked him to the curb a long time ago. Dickhead.

janehopper · 21/10/2025 22:44

I liked this series better than the last one. I felt I finally understood the relationship between her and Hal, it confused me before. And Aidan Turner doing his best bond audition was fun (he reminded me so much of Timothy Dalton). Plus CJ and Josh being married. I didn't think much of the cliffhanger, when Hal got blown up was the best one.

Italiangreyhound · 22/10/2025 00:14

Except why did she make that choice?

Which choice? To support Hal's idea?

i think series 2 was better than series 1, series 3, not as good as series 3 but better than series 1.

Peachy2005 · 22/10/2025 00:41

No not that choice. Her personal life. Not saying Aidan Turner was right for her though. His hair really doesn’t suit him in this either ☹️

Italiangreyhound · 22/10/2025 01:32

Oh I see, well yes, I was a bit disappointed sexy politician didn't work out s I felt that the guy might have been consolation prize!

I thought the Dennison situation was a bit odd

Yeah, what happened? He seemed to be in love with her before, and then seemed pretty keen when she wanted to shag him but got cock blocked by the phone call, and then suddenly she's with someone else and he's married!!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 22/10/2025 09:31

Exactly @janehopper

Pastlast · 22/10/2025 22:18

Loved this. Without saying too much. I Liked the way Kate processed her complex relationship with Hal and realised he probably wasn’t the only toxic element of their relationship. Her slow realisation that Hal and Grace are a v dangerous combination. Loved the barely plausible political plotting and fighting for power.

Italiangreyhound · 22/10/2025 23:34

I think they had to keep the Ross/Rachel Daphne/Niles thing going with Kate and Dennison.

Just finished S3 this morning... took me 3 days 😆. Loved it.

Only realised who Todd was in the last episode - I feel like this is something CJ and Josh were conspiring towards in the WW.

DameWishalot · 23/10/2025 11:28

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 22/10/2025 09:31

Exactly @janehopper

I actually checked Netflix hadn't skipped an episode!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 23/10/2025 12:48

@toparkforfreeorforfee weird seeing Josh all over CJ though !

Yeah I felt I ‘got’ their marriage. I think I’m going to go back and rewatch from the beginning now with fresh eyes. Also because I can’t remember most of it.

Italiangreyhound · 24/10/2025 03:42

"weird seeing Josh all over CJ though" Who are Josh and CJ?

OP posts:
Italiangreyhound · 24/10/2025 03:43

Oh from the West Wing?

Dont watch much tv at all but do enjoy this and have watched it this week. It felt increasingly ridiculous and I do feel that the British intelligence operative* is likely to be double crossing someone somewhere as well. It’s all a bit too convenient otherwise to have a British Hal.

*hope that’s not too much of a spoiler

MagAmberson · 24/10/2025 08:56

The five month time jump didn't work for me. They spent two seasons building tension between Kate and Dennyson then halfway through this season they skip ahead in the timeline and suddenly Aidan Turner's character appears to be a high level official she's involved with? She seemed to rely on and trust his every word which did not make sense. He should have been introduced earlier on in the season.

There wasn't much chemistry either, which is a shame as AT was brilliant in Rivals.

Delighted to see Alison Janney and Bradley Whitford together, makes me nostalgic for the west wing 🙂

It was enjoyable but if was the first season I'm not sure I'd keep watching.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 24/10/2025 09:01

I can’t follow this thread as I don’t know the real names of all the actors 😂 but it annoys me that Kate berates Hal for being impulsive and not being able to keep his mouth shut when she is the same! She just thinks she’s cleverer than everyone else.

36times1 · 24/10/2025 09:07

I wanted to love it but found it disappointing. Maybe I should have another go. The acting was so contrived.

toparkforfreeorforfee · 24/10/2025 09:09

Italiangreyhound · 24/10/2025 03:43

Oh from the West Wing?

Yes - the actor who played Josh in the WW plays Todd in the Diplomat and Josh worked closely with CJ, who was played by Alison Janney, who plays the president.
