I know that my first thread isn't full yet. I just wanted to create the second thread before i forgot.

I'm also curious where the wedding took place.
It wasn't the usual church. In fact didn't look like a church at all but also didn't look like a registrar office (which back then it was that or a church - you couldn't marry anywhere else).

Looked like a registrar office to me.

Looked like a reg. office to me. They vary enormously but I've definitely been to one that looked similar.

Looked like a registrar office to me.

The room seemed quite big though.
It would make sense as it was a "mixed" marriage.

Some are big - I'm from a big family and have been to register office weddings with 60+ attendees. It's not always 2 witnesses only.

Why do you think that? Thought it was a lovely ending to the series, tying up all the loose ends so neatly, not all happy but moving and bittersweet.

Becausei was expecting something gritty as the rest of the episodes in this series have been good. Instead we get this - wishy washy storylines and a happy ending. I much prefer the darker episodes which involve the public more than the nuns and midwives.

Maybe I'm just cross as I didn't realise it was the last one tonight!

Were hen nights even a thing then?

Yes, but they were in the local pub or the front room. People didn't go to Timbuctoo for them.

The matched up the new nun and her sister well, I wonder if they are related in real life

I thought the same. I thought they were twins at first glance.

God, that was boring 🥱
Really disappointed by that final episode.

I agree. A whole mishmash of seemingly random events stitched together . It was a mess.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 02/03/2025 21:56

I agree that it looked like a very ordinary registrars office.

Yes actually it did look like a very "modern" (for 1970) Registar Office. I wonder what Poplar Register Office was like then. In 1970 there was a lot of new buildings.
I might have a Google.....

Couldn’t see any likeness myself, apart from the fact that they both had long, dark hair.

RosaMoline · 02/03/2025 22:04

I wish Geoffrey became a regular character. I love him.

Needmorelego · 02/03/2025 22:04

I just googled Tower Hamlets Registry Office and if it hasn't changed much since 1970 then it was pretty accurate on the show 😂
(picture incoming.... might have to wait for approval)

Another excellent performance by the young actor playing Paula.

PrimalScreaming · 02/03/2025 22:05

I wasn't feeling it tonight... back to the flowery overly-verbose speeches, happy endings and knowing what's coming before it happens. Nice to see Fenella Woolgar though. And I do like the new nun too.

Fifteen minutes in I said to my partner, 'I bet Heidi Thomas wrote this episode'... just looked it up - yep! It had all her trademarks!

Toddlerteaplease · 02/03/2025 22:14

Couldn't work out why Trixie was in it this week. She had no storyline. Glad it's worked out for Nancy.

Housemum · 02/03/2025 22:14

Totally unrelated to the plot, there was a kids' tv theme tune playing when all the children were watching - does anyone know what it was? Driving me mad and Google Hum couldn't work out what I was trying to guess!

Lobsterteapot · 02/03/2025 22:22

Does anyone know how many series have been commissioned? I would love to see call the midwife in the 1980s.

spiderlight · 02/03/2025 22:31

@EElderflower14 - poor Wilf! That must have been awful for you both. There are some cruel people around. I hope he's doing well - I love his posts 💕

The (real life) nuns left Poplar and stopped being midwives in 1976 so if they are keeping to that fact they will have to end the show soon.

I thought they would leave SMJ at the Mother House.

So did she...that's why she was refusing to go.
I'm glad she did though, I like her relationship with the new nun.
It's amazing how the power of prayer has completely cleared up her dementia though isn't it?

I'm not sure which year this episode was set in, but that was the music Olga Korbut (young Russian gymnast) used for her Floor performance in the 1972 Olympics.

Marcipix · 02/03/2025 22:41

Last one?!😭😭😭

Fatfreefatball · 02/03/2025 22:47

@Housemum I recognised the tune immediately from my childhood! After a bit of goggling and thanks to @miI found it - Java by Al Hirt. Theme tune to Vision On.

Fatfreefatball · 02/03/2025 22:48

Thanks to @Missingthesea's clue.
