longer In CTM!

Who does the cooking at Nonnatus House?

I always cry when Barbara dies.

Me too! It was so sad.

Who does the cooking at Nonnatus House?

In the first series (and the books) there was a cook mentioned, Mrs B I think? But she was never seen.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/02/2025 05:32

it was rather annoying, Trixie suddenly going on about getting up and about after having a baby and the racist woman who refuses then gets a DVT.
i dont ever recall being asked to get up and about after child birth!

although i worked with a woman in the 1980s who was on bedrest due to a bad back, and then died of a blood clot

Crazytimesbackthen · 11/02/2025 08:49

I’ve watched and enjoyed CTM for years but the scriptwriting is becoming so predictable. I watched that episode with my friend and we correctly predicted everything that happened. Rubbish and rats. Who’s going to contract weil’s disease? The old man became ill, he’ll have Weil’s disease.

When Rosalind lifted Nigel the cat for a cuddle my friend said I wouldn’t be cuddling Nigel, he’s probably been killing rats. Lo and behold Nigel dies and she has weil’s disease.

The sudden emphasis on encouraging the post partum mums to get moving. Let’s watch the lazy racist who has taken to her bed she’ll surely have a dvt .

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 11/02/2025 09:27

Catching up. The very cute and very obviously domestic rats are very amusing.

Also finding the exercises post birth funny. They are right of course that mobilising is good, wonder what people would think if I tried to start a mini keep fit class on the postnatal ward! We might just stick to encouraging women to potter around to the loo and look after their baby.

And a tongue tie. Have we had a mention of tongue tie before?

Bunionbabe · 11/02/2025 09:35

As I have been sofa-bound for the last 8 weeks after a fracture I have been doom-scrolling Dr Google for info on blood clots. How realistic is the way it suddenly happened to the racist mum I wonder? Doc says all OK with me so no real reason to worry.

Oh bless you! If your doctor isn't worried, I would put it out of your mind.

Bunionbabe · 11/02/2025 11:11

Thank you, goid advice.

I was sofa bound a few years ago due to a bad injury. I was absolutely fine.

Are you on blood thinners? I imagine the mum in CTM wouldn’t have been.

As long as you keep moving as much as you can you should be ok. When I broke my ankle I made sure I 'wrote' the alphabet with my toes and moved my foot up and down as much as I could. Hope you are up and about soon as possible. It's no fun being confined like this, especially if you have pain too💐

Bunionbabe · 11/02/2025 13:40

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Am doing all the 'right' things, moving around etc. As I said, docs say all OK and no sign of anything sinister. Too much time sitting, ruminating and diving around the Internet. I was surprised at the speedy onset of the patient's symptoms and the huge red patch on her leg. Sorry to hijack the thread but I guess programmes like CtM do help to raise awareness of health issues. Thank you again.

I was screaming at cyril to take Nigel to the vet as soon as he got sick.

I've just caught up. That wasn't very romantic was it. Lucille and I are getting divorced and I don't fancy being a single man.

Yes I thought that "I don't want to be single" felt a bit "and you are at hand" rather than particularly loving. I suppose he had already grieved his lost relationship with Lucille, but still.

If they have a child they'll call him Nigel, won't they..

Latenightreader · 11/02/2025 16:34

Apart from Sisters Julienne and Monica Joan, plus Trixie, Fred and family and the Turners, who knew Lucille? It would be interesting to have a scene with a conversation about her.

I remember Sister MJ scheming to get Lucille and Cyril together.

Uricon2 · 11/02/2025 19:21

I think Joyce's storyline is setting up the fact that Cyril and Rosalind will not have an easy time, terrible as that is.

Until now the Nonnatus House District has been (possibly too much) populated by warm hearted, accepting, liberal people, when even with the East End as the longstanding melting pot of many cultures it was there were tensions and intolerance. I have wondered if they are going to show any beloved characters as disapproving of a relationship between a black man and a white woman when faced with it. Actually I'm hoping not (although it might be realistic) and that it is confined to people like the mother with the DVT.

I was brought up in the industrial West Midlands in the 60s and 70s and am very glad to live in better days regarding this.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/02/2025 19:43

Was willing Cyril to take Nigel to the vet straight away. Poor Nigel.

So was i. We had a dog when i was younger. One day he started throwing up and he went off his food. The vet was contacted immediately. It bothered me that cyril didn't find a vet straight away.

Would a night vet visit for a cat been a feasible scenario in 1970?

Latenightreader · 12/02/2025 13:00

James Heriott did, although slightly earlier and in Yorkshire! This being my only knowledge of vets...

For pets or farm animals though?
