I just watched the first episode and I thought I might binge watch, but actually I'm going to enjoy it at a slower pace.

I really liked it. I think they took the most interesting Motherland character and gave her legs. It helps that her mum is Joanna Lumley because she is never not watchable.

I like how Amanda is out of her depth with the 'cool' characters and I like how the three of them got in the van at the end, which kind of echoed the threesome at the heart of Motherland (Julia, Kevin and Liz) even though Amanda approaches friendship differently - or doesn't see who her real mates might be. Anne is so bloody loyal to her, but it's funny. A good move.

Well I got to the end of Ep 5. It improved slightly - but so little depth. I know it’s comedy but it’s a crying shame to employ Siobhán McSweeney and then give her effectively nothing to do.

Anne was great. It would also have been lovely to have some reference to each of the Motherland gang - to at least hear what they’re doing and whether Amanda had had any contact with them in the intervening years.

Binge watched it and loved it !! Gets better with each episode

the80sweregreat · 06/02/2025 18:17

I just see Amanda's mum as Patsy Stone from Ab Fab if she had had any children ! ( not sure if that character did have children though !?)

Hotflushesandchilblains · 06/02/2025 18:54

I thought it was great. Different to Motherland and maybe I did not laugh as much, but I did really like it a lot. I love Anne- I just find that character so funny and the way that Phillipa Dunne delivers her lines is amazing. I always thought I would like to see more of her, so this show is a treat.

MoonWoman69 · 06/02/2025 19:08

I'm binging tonight for an hour before The Apprentice! Then the rest after that. I'm quite looking forward to it!

ShillyShallySherbet · 06/02/2025 19:18

I have watched them all, I have not got the will power to take it slowly! I really enjoyed it. It has the familiarity of motherland with the music and some of the characters but otherwise seems completely different. I absolutely loved Johannes, the actor was so perfect in that role and gave me the most laughs. Mal is very very fanciable! Joanna Lumley was brilliant and a much more likeable character than she was in motherland. Amanda was too and Anne is such a great actress and character. I really hope they do another series with a cameo or two from other motherland characters. I agree Liz and Mal would be great together but I think it’s pretty obvious who he’s going to end up with if this series continues!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 06/02/2025 19:23

Johannes was the male Amanda!

I'll carry on watching for Samuel Anderson ( the neighbour / referee ) who is just gorgeous!
I miss Liz , Julia and Kevin though ( especially Kevin !)

I miss Kev too.
Loved Liz’s one liners and I also miss Meg.

Julia was too flaky and selfish for me as a mate.
I hope it’s going to be good.
👍

I understand why Amanda has downsized, but why has Anne downsized?

Furcoatandcowboyboots · 06/02/2025 19:36

I loved Anne meeting Johannes for the first time and mistaking him saying ‘you can call me your highness’ and then her awkward curtsy Grin

I understand why Amanda has downsized, but why has Anne downsized?

Yes, they did not flesh out Annes character, did they? In one she was going off to work - to do what? And people have mentioned the children thing - why did we only see Darius? Maybe it is because Amanda is so self centred she does not care to ask.

Omg you're so right! They would be perfect together!

I'm not buying it if he ends up with Amanda.

Yes, am actively fearful that Amanda and him will get together instead.

I miss Liz and her sexy leopard coat and her buggy. She deserves to meet a lovely guy.

JSMill · 06/02/2025 20:29

I think Mal would be good for Amanda. He doesn't let her order him around and takes the mick out of her.

the80sweregreat · 06/02/2025 10:28

Can't recall how many children Anne had in ML , but she did have a tiny baby at one stage so they must be 4 or 5 or something now ?

Wasn't the running joke that she was always pregnant

mizu · 06/02/2025 20:48

On episode 3 and enjoying it. Crikey Mal is gorgeous Grin

paranoidnamechanger · 06/02/2025 20:54

Samuel Anderson has such a wonderfully natural way of acting. And yes he’s still gorgeous at 42 but then he was always the best looking of all the History Boys, back in the noughties.

Turmerictolly · 06/02/2025 20:59

I like it and there are some really funny lines.

I thought Liz and the sheep farmer were lovely together, although the distance between where they lived wasn’t ideal.

NoDramaLama55 · 06/02/2025 21:15

I actually came on here to ask about Anne and her other kids but now I think it's a running joke we don't know her details.... like why she lives there...her PhD...because Amanda doesn't give a stuff...

MichaelAndEagle · 06/02/2025 21:38

I've seen them all, I liked it.
It's not Motherland but it made me laugh out loud a few times.
I think there will be a series 2.

RaininSummer · 06/02/2025 21:40

I was very disappointed with this. Only watched one but not much in the way of laughs sadly. Not sure we will bother with the rest.

tennissquare · 06/02/2025 21:41

I'm on episode 4, it's really funny and the series much better with each episode.

piscofrisco · 06/02/2025 21:43

I liked it well enough. It was never going your way be as good as motherland but it's funny enough and I quite liked Amanda by the end of it.

I like it and there are some really funny lines.

Shin Fame and R Kelly had me on the floor.
