I am a huge Motherland fan and wondered how they'd top that with Amandaland.

But they have! Saw episode 1 last night (haven't seen the others yet) and was laughing all the way through, as was DH. I thought it was hilarious and that they balanced the farce element absolutely perfectly, to stay just on the right side of believable, which is what made it so funny.

Even all the children (who don't usually speak in Motherland) were added in to speak just enough to add to the drama and they got the teenage tone and words spot on.

Amanda is a complex character, and so lacking in self awareness that the character has a lot of material to mine. It was a genius idea, brilliantly executed.

londonbanana · 06/02/2025 10:06

Currently watching it... I like it and yes it's not as good as motherland but still worth a watch!

Why does Anne say she has twins... so does she had Darius, the other two born one after the other and then twins too?

NowNumber5 · 06/02/2025 10:11

Another one fully not expecting to like it but I love it.
Think I’ve actually laughed more at this, than Motherland to be honest.
All the characters are enjoyable and I’d watch Joanna Lumley watching paint dry - she’s wonderful, and not as ghastly as she was initially portrayed in ML.

It’s a YES from me!

NowNumber5 · 06/02/2025 10:12

Also wondering where Anne’s other (numerous?) children are.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 06/02/2025 10:28

Anne did call their names at one point Grin

the80sweregreat · 06/02/2025 10:28

Can't recall how many children Anne had in ML , but she did have a tiny baby at one stage so they must be 4 or 5 or something now ?

storminabuttercup · 06/02/2025 11:27

Anne did call out to the children when she was on the zoom call

I liked it, Amanda is very much a farcical character but it works. I loved Mal and Fi. It's not as good as motherland but it's certainly a good watch

I do wish there would be another motherland I loved Liz, Kevin and Meg

mydogisthebest · 06/02/2025 11:32

Thought it was a pile of shit and not the slightest bit funny. All the characters are very very very annoying

the80sweregreat · 06/02/2025 11:53

I liked Kevin and Liz in ML.
I'd rather a show based around those two, but this made me laugh and wasn't too bad.

Rosalina2025 · 06/02/2025 11:58

I thought some of the characters were good. Mal (lovely), Fi and especially Della. I've not seen it all yet.

distinctpossibility · 06/02/2025 12:11

"She's got an uber rating of 3.6 Anne, that's a red flag" 😂

the80sweregreat · 06/02/2025 12:40

Amanda does have some great one liners

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 06/02/2025 13:28

Watched the first episode last night and really enjoyed it. Not as good as Motherland but it still made me laugh out loud.

I did think there was something a bit 'off' with Anne though but not sure why / what I really mean!?!

PrincessScarlett · 06/02/2025 13:38

Knew I recognised Mal from somewhere.

Joanna Lumley stole the show. She was very funny hiding from her carer Joy.

RipleyGreen · 06/02/2025 13:39

She’s just too unlikeable for it to be enjoyable.

SueSuddio · 06/02/2025 13:53

Loved this, episode 1 as good as Motherland for me. Nice to see Anne back at work and a little changed. I like Amanda, in an Alan Partridge kind of a way. I like how she reacted to the kids drinking party & caring for her mum. She's nuanced and a great actress.

Really great, going to be a treat.

Plantpotpot · 06/02/2025 13:56

Loved it. Just binged watched the whole thing - went on bbc iPlayer for something else and saw this instead. I’d say as good as motherland personally

JSMill · 06/02/2025 13:57

I don't she's unlikeable. She can be a cow sometimes but she has layers. I liked the episode where she really puts her foot down about Georgie messing around at school because she realised her lack of education has given her a lack of choice. Of course that was after telling Anne that a Phd from Imperial College wasn't a degree! I swear I know people who would say something like that.

the80sweregreat · 06/02/2025 13:58

Anne didn't seem too different really
Worried about her son ( as you would be in that state ) Off to work.
Only thing I did wonder was where was her youngest child ? ..

Lellamir · 06/02/2025 14:28

I was dubious, because I lived ML so much. Plus, Liz was my favorite character, closely followed by Julia.

It was pretty much what I expected. Nowhere near as good, but better than most other stuff.
I think some of Amanda's 'speeches' were a bit too much - like trying to shoehorn every stereotype, every trope in.

I like both the new men, and I like the kids playing a bigger part.
Della is the perfect balance of real and comedic cringe. (In fact, I reckon she might be based on a friend of mine!)

I'll never not love Purdey/Joanna Lumley.

I'll keep watching, but am currently distracted by 'Minx'.

Giggorata · 06/02/2025 14:33

I watched it (all) last night and enjoyed it.
I wish that they would maybe drag Kevin and Liz into the next series, as I thought they were great characters in the general mix.
Amanda is still gloriously annoying Amanda, Joanna Lumley is extraordinarily good and some of the new characters are fine, a couple could do with more development.
Anne, yes, I would like to know more about how she ended up here and where her life has gone. Perhaps that is why she didn't seem the same and there is more to be told.
I suppose it is natural enough for the children to have some speaking parts and plot lines, now they are older.
All in all, I hope for more.

Daveandhiscoaches · 06/02/2025 15:14

I’m up to episode 5. Thought it was brilliant. Very funny, very well written.

Wallasey123 · 06/02/2025 15:33

Ok just catching up. I really really liked it! Not as much as motherland BUT still loved it and wasn’t disappointed.

i have the biggest crush on Mal. Joanna Lumley as the mum was sensational. And I really laughed at Johannes - great addition 😅

I preferred it to Motherland which I absolutely loved, all the new characters were great. I particularly enjoyed the camping episode and Joanna Lumley was really good. I loved Amanda’s clothes.

ValentineValentineV · 06/02/2025 15:38

Oh and I really enjoyed all the maths homework bits, very, very funny. I found Amanda talking about only having three GCSE’s very moving.
