She (LP) was also v good in 'No Good Deed' (think is Netflix). - only in one episode, but v funny.

Rosalina2025 · 09/02/2025 19:11

I love Lucy Punch. She was funny in Dinner For Schmucks and Bad Teacher.

BillyBobbie · 09/02/2025 20:11

This was motherland without the best characters for me. In terms of demographic I think it’s aimed at anyone with teens of a similar age. Motherland was definitely funnier when mine were primary age that if I watch it now.

gallic · 09/02/2025 20:13

Amanda's interactions with Julia and Anne is what make motherland for me so Amandaland missed the mark a bit

mewkins · 09/02/2025 20:43

CountTo10 · 09/02/2025 14:45

Yes this!

And Amanda's response ,'Yes well it's not really a degree is it?'

It was also quite poignant to find out Amanda only had 3 GCSEs because her mother was more bothered in pushing the superficial than academics. Explains why Amanda is so so insecure and consequently a try hard snob.

I think her whole life has been spent trying to gain her mother's approval- finding a rich husband and not having to work. I thought the ending was really good - Felicity acknowledging that Amanda was better off without Johannes despite his wealth.

TabbyT · 09/02/2025 22:11

Loving this but if Ananda went to Putney High she would have more than three GCSEs. It is a very academic school!

It is taken as a comedy. But people are allowed to discuss what they want to on here. Thats why its called a discussion forum.

Lengthy posts about Acton vs Chiswick is not really adding anything to a discussion about a tv programme.

Lalgarh · 10/02/2025 00:17

I am rather childishly liking the petty intra- London neighborhood sniping.

Reminds me of a line in Upstairs Downstairs when lady Marjorie was contemplating her daughter having to move out of Belgravia: "Chelsea? Only hooligans and artists live there"

The horror!😱

I really liked Liz but don't miss any of the others. I think it's better.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 06:56

I suppose that Amanda wasn't particularly academic and messed about at school and they probably wrote her off a bit which is why she wants more for her two.
Her talents lay elsewhere and she definitely isn't stupid!

Agreed 😂 I'm Irish, haven't a clue about either area

SantasLargerHelper · 10/02/2025 08:08

I'm a northerner and ditto. I have absolutely no idea about areas of London, schools etc and don't much care.

I much prefer the characters in this to Motherland. Especially the hot downstairs neighbour, he's definitely enhanced my viewing pleasure.

Yes it is because this a discussion forum about a TV show in which locations are part of the story.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 08:17

I also like Mal too !

Bailiwitch · 10/02/2025 08:23

I imagine the casting of a highly attractive man as Amanda’s downstairs neighbour was not accidental …

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 09:29

I only left my rough city comprehensive with 4 O levels and a few CSEs , but my school were of the opinion that jobs would be easy to find and not to worry it too much ! I'm much older than Amanda though, but it seemed to be the attitude in the late 70s / early 80s where I lived.
I knew a few intelligent people who didn't achieve much more really. Sad to think of times like that.

paranoidnamechanger · 10/02/2025 09:41

It is implausible that someone like Amanda would have so few qualifications, but I get the point that the writers are trying to make.

Episode one was really strong

The cringey scenes at Ella and Fi's house were brilliantly done

Proper ML level cringe behaviour

Haha! My 16yr old DS, who's a massive Motherland fan too, was watching this episode without me (i had seen it before), said it gave him major second hand cringe, and I totally got what he meant!

Really enjoyed it, almost as good as Motherland I thought and even better on a repeat watch. Cant' wait for series 2.

DataColour · 10/02/2025 10:03

We recognised Anna Crilly as the insurance investigator in Ghosts, she was brilliant in that role!

DataColour · 10/02/2025 10:10

The plot inconsistency that annoyed me the most was the fact that Anne went from teaching binomial expansions (further maths) to simple can do it in your head algebra in the next scene and the kids weren't getting even that, so how can they possibly be doing FM!

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 12:05

Amanda's boyfriend is Peter S , must be a relation to one of the writers !

Maybe she teaches both A Level students (further maths) and others?

WinterColdBrrrr · 10/02/2025 12:15

@MabelMora there are no lengthy posts about location. Its just a discussion. You can just scroll past that post if you don't want to discuss it. But you are not a gatekeeper to what can be discussed about the programme.
The location is important because one of the mane focal points in Amanda moving to an area that is 'beneath her' - south Harlesden.

EmpressOfTheThread · 10/02/2025 12:15

pearbottomjeans · 10/02/2025 12:10

She is a product developer for Glaxo, according to Motherland. . She's teaching her son and his friends. She has the materials, the papers and the questions, you'd think she could work out the level! No matter, it was a funny scene.
