I am enjoying it

I find the Acton/Chiswick references are funny I am sure many of us can relate to this sort of snobbery

I find Joanna Lumley steals every scene she is in she is brilliant in it

MichaelAndEagle · 10/02/2025 12:23

I wonder if the reasons behind Anne's house move might be explored in a second series, as it was rather brushed over but the main point was Amanda so maybe the writers didn't want to reveal that just yet.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 12:23

Agree that JL is fantastic and a scene stealer
I am officially in luv with Mal ..
I wished my neighborhood had one around 😆

Maybe she teaches both A Level students (further maths) and others?

The poster’s point was that the kids were initially doing Further Maths homework but later they couldn’t grasp much simpler stuff, so it was unlikely that they were genuinely studying Further Maths. Nothing to do with what Anne knew or didn’t know.

It’s just comedy though!

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 12:29

Seems it's the writers that don't know their pure maths from their algebra or whatever the problem is !

Or maybe if it gets a second series they will come on this thread for pointers on how to do better 😁

Yes it was a funny scene, I was just being pedantic!

Lucy Punch is also in a really funny programme called Vexed, from years ago. With the excellent Toby Stephens, well worth a watch.

storminabuttercup · 10/02/2025 15:30

Wasn't Anne's husband lll in ML? Sure it was mentioned so maybe they had to downsize and now Anne's gone back to work?

In the pilot episode of motherland, Anne says her husband had a small stroke...but I don't think anything else is ever mentioned

I seeee clearly wasn’t paying attention to that subplot 😁

MoonWoman69 · 10/02/2025 16:04

Definitely think having watched it all again, a second time, they've got to do a second series! I think Annes character was pretty much the same as series one, but that she's gained a bit of confidence back from going back to work.
I think the "gatekeeper" (🙄) here is the one that objects to people having opinions about a show and its content, that differ from their own. It is a forum after all.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 16:26

I don't recall seeing Anne's husband at all or Kev's wife, but I am usually wrong.
It's a shame the others couldn't do a quick meet up , but probably too busy.
The Julia actress was marrying Smithy and Sonia in the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 16:38

Mal would find Amanda too much after a while I think.
His very down to earth and she has too many hang ups to be any kind of normal girlfriend
I do think his fallen for her a bit though!

She's very high maintenance.

thisoldcity · 10/02/2025 16:52

I think like Della says at one point, there is something sort of admirable about what Amanda is doing - just picking herself up and relaunching herself as someone who co-labs at a kitchen shop, getting there on her bike with her little mood board, now the Tesla has gone, starting all over again. I think Mal can see that and actually is rather drawn to her.

I haven't been a huge fan of Joanna L before because I found her too much of a caricature in Ab Fab, but I think in this she is actually more of a believable character who is coming to terms with being elderly. After Bunny's funeral she said something like, now death is even coming for ex-models with fantastic legs!

FeltCarrot · 10/02/2025 17:10

For Anna Crilly fans, she had a comedy series a while back with Katy Wix. The Countdown clip was hilarious and Anna’s real life husband played the host.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 17:19

When we met Amanda's mum in ML she was a bit of a monster , but they have ironed out a lot of her more abrasive characteristics and made her almost likeable !
I thought she would have forgotten to go to the teacher meeting , but she didn't ( for example)
She was great in this , a true 'national treasure '

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 17:27

Yes, Amanda should be proud to start over when she had so much before and that beautiful house.

I'm confused in the first minute of the show Confused

She says to the kids in the car that she knows it's not the same as where they used to live in Chiswick Confused

They lived in Acton before?

I thought Julia lived in Queens Park, so assumed they all lived in Queens Park?

But yes, I don't understand why Anne has moved?

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 17:44

Anne has moved house because the writers wanted her to! lol

mallorytowers8282 · 10/02/2025 17:53

RipleyGreen · 06/02/2025 13:39

She’s just too unlikeable for it to be enjoyable.

I didn't really find Amanda unlikeable at all.

She always had a smile on her face, and she did always try her best, even if she got it wrong.

For example, when she was stuffing sausage rolls in her face and was called up on stage - she slapped a smile on and up she went. I know it was all part of her charade and to make her look good, but she was also doing it for her kids / the football team.

Also, I loved Johannes, I thought he was great.

mallorytowers8282 · 10/02/2025 17:55

Wallasey123 · 06/02/2025 15:33

Ok just catching up. I really really liked it! Not as much as motherland BUT still loved it and wasn’t disappointed.

i have the biggest crush on Mal. Joanna Lumley as the mum was sensational. And I really laughed at Johannes - great addition 😅

Agree, loved Johannes, he really made me laugh.

I assume the reason they filmed this rather than another series of Motherland was down to who was keen to appear. Do miss the old gang but I think it’s true to life. When your children are at primary school there is a group of mums you see everyday. Then as kids go to different school or arrange their own meet ups you don’t see them much at all.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2025 18:05

Her boyfriend was an odd character for sure although the way he went on about paying for the fund raiser event was cringy.
I loved the remark about the drink Cava v Champagne
'It's Spain pretending it's France '
Made me laugh ( not that I'm a drink snob myself ! lol )
Well played by Peter S and the roof top air conditioning making a racket also made me laugh too.

SigmaFreud · 10/02/2025 18:06

Such a pity they didn’t make more Motherland. Amandaland is just not a patch on the original for me. I really missed the ensemble cast and the new characters were just not engaging or likeable enough to be memorable for me. Johannes was a scene stealer and I found that Anne and Amanda’s mother were quite different from the original series. Amanda is a great character but I just got sick of her to be honest.
