Yes, that was what I was trying understand. Were people actually saying that Anna wouldn’t have noticed poor spelling and grammar because she was Irish?

One might as well ask whether whoever of Linda and Minah wrote the traitors’ letter managed to make two errors in three words because they were English, or because they were women.

I think what they were trying to say was that Anna wouldn’t understand that “strong, independent woman” is a phrase most likely to be used by another woman because she’s Irish and it’s an English phrase. I’m pretty sure people from all English speaking countries would have heard the phrase before though. It’s not like Minah gave away there’s a scouse traitor by writing something like “you’d be boss as a traitor.” I really don’t think the phrasing was any kind of evidence as to who the traitors are.

myplace · 14/01/2025 10:36

To be fair there will always be detail oriented people who look at concrete evidence like handwriting and spelling, and others who focus on the feel of someone’s authenticity. You can’t easily pinpoint why someone feels inauthentic.

And clearly the failure rate is awful 😆 It’s still a decent strategy IF you can be objective. I mean, they all saw and commented that Linda was over performing when Livi left, and all dismissed it.

outofofficeagain · 14/01/2025 10:37

I think the 'strong independent female' thing is a red herring.

Because everything intentional can easily be a double bluff.

So two male traitors would write that to put people off.

thismotherhoodthing · 14/01/2025 10:55

I'm really hoping for my theory that the two faithfuls left in the game will see the traitors, with one getting murdered and the other being given the option to stay in the game as a traitor, or leave. I just feel like the traitors meeting one faithful and murdering them feels a bit anticlimactic for some reason. Maybe I am just looking for a bit more drama! I feel this series is a bit hit and miss so far

placemats · 14/01/2025 12:04

Marking my place. Some great gifs and photos. I may re-watch Series One as I didn't really pay it much attention then.

JaneJeffer · 14/01/2025 12:48

The nuance of calling the Irish contestant thick because a British one made spelling and grammar mistakes has gone right over my head.

To be fair JaneJeffer I don't think the original poster who suggest Anna would've get the nuance of 'strong independent woman" meant Anna wouldn't notice the SPAG - feck knows what they meant. Either they don't know what nuance means or for some bizarre reason thinks those words are only used in Britain.

It was some other poster that who was unrelatedly waa smug about the SPAG Linda made. They were just being rude.

I think it was me that might have put the two together, in order to have a dig at the two posters for their stupid posts.

myplace · 14/01/2025 13:43

I don’t think any of it is nuance. I think it’s detail.
And that’s rarely cultural. ((🥸 starts wondering about Swiss efficiency))

JaneJeffer · 14/01/2025 13:56

But someone said Anna probably can't spell independent for no reason at all so what are we to infer from that @APushbikeNamedReluctance? Plus the fact that nobody else noticed the "nuance" either until it was pointed out on television.

WinterCosiness · 14/01/2025 14:00

APushbikeNamedReluctance · 14/01/2025 08:17

Someone pointed out in a previous thread that Anna mentioned to Charlotte that"strong independent woman" was on the seduction letter.

She did not say anything about how that means its an all-woman group. Either she

  • didn't say it because she didn't think about it like that (just like everyone on these threads)
  • she didn't get the nuance because she's Irish. (Charlotte didn't get it, because she didn't see the SPAG errors, which somehow were a clue.)
  • it wasn't broadcast

Oh I see. I hadn't clocked or recalled that.
I don't personally think being Irish would make any difference.
Got to be honest and say that I don't think I'd necessarily clock the significance of the words, or think it'd infer an all woman/gay men group. I actually still don't think it necessarily would mean that. Definitely at least one woman who directed those words; but not necessarily an all woman group.

TetHouse · 13/01/2025 21:46

It’s still not clear to me why someone would think a native English speaker not from the UK would be any less likely to notice spelling mistakes, though.

I just looked up a still of the letter, which said, pre-printed:

WE WISH TO RECRUIT YOU AS A TRAITOR BECAUSE YOU ARE

after which Minah or Linda had handwritten ‘strong independent women’, omitting the ‘a’ and using an incorrect plural. I don’t think this is a ‘clue’ or a ‘nuance’, it’s just the writing of someone flustered and/or not very literate.

She may well have noticed the spelling mistakes and the curious turn of phrase, but didn't think it was relevant. I wouldn't have thought it noteworthy, I would just have skipped over it.

It was the use of the phrase that I was talking about. We as viewers can see the potential significance of it, but we know who the traitors are!

Turkeyhen · 14/01/2025 14:23

I would've analysed the hell out of that letter if I'd been the recipient (the handwriting, the choice of words, the mistakes). They have so little to go on, surely you would seize on any possible clue about the traitor who had written it? I reckon Anna did talk about it but it was edited out. Or she was told by the production team not to divulge the content of the letter to others, perhaps.

tailinthejam · 14/01/2025 14:30

I wonder just how long they actually get to see and read the letter though. Most of the contestants have read it once and then folded it up again.

Turkeyhen · 14/01/2025 14:38

Even if you didn't have long to look at the letter, you'd clock the characteristics of the handwriting and look for similarities at the round table, surely? From what I remember of it (and we only caught a glimpse, far less time than Anna would have had) the handwriting was large and rounded - it looked (to me) like a young woman's handwriting style. Minah must have written it because Linda has smaller, more refined handwriting. Unless Linda deliberately disguised her handwriting?

Stowickthevast · 14/01/2025 16:13

I'm checking in but not sure there's much point as I'm out tomorrow night so will have to catch up on Thursday. I reckon you may be on the next thread by then! I also managed to completely miss thread 4.

Did they? Id have to go back and check.

Just to clarify - the bit about the nuance being aren't my words. That was up thread and as of yet unexplained.

Probably won't explain now because I've been going on and on about it!

Yes, sorry, these threads fill up so quickly that it's really hard to keep up with all the posts. I'll scroll back a bit 👍

I know, us daft Irish women have never heard of strong independent women before. So thankful it was explained on this thread so I can understand

whosaidtha · 14/01/2025 18:32

Everyone hating on how bad a traitor Linda is. But she's done better than armarni and a lot of traitors in previous years.

JaneJeffer · 14/01/2025 18:41

They're probably thinking she couldn't be a traitor because she's acting so dodgy and a traitor wouldn't do that Grin

I love it, it's just brilliant how she keeps swerving banishment.

Though I think she'll get caught in the next few episodes. I mean she has to surely!!

I wonder if we'll get any focus on Alex this week. He still remains a bit of a mystery.

whosaidtha · 14/01/2025 18:53

I think they might assume that one of the 4 picked to play the game was a traitor. Like last year.
