It was brilliant, I agree. Perfect casting. I live near "Pemberley"...

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/12/2024 18:57

Absolutely love it, but usually rewatch from the beginning of episode 4, just because all the best bits are after then. Final showdown with Lady Catherine de Burgh is probably my favourite bit!

SleepDeprivedElf · 27/12/2024 19:15

There's even a joke about how good it is, in the Barbie movie!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/12/2024 19:16

I give at least an annual outing to it

I love the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

On youtube there are a series of documentaries about the making of it and the attention to detail that went into it - for example - they dug up the garden of "Longbourn" to remove any plants that would not have been in Britain in the Regency era and then put them back after filming, and they spent a weekend in a University textile department to screen print the cottons and muslins used for the dresses so that they would have authentic designs etc

BrickRedLipstick · 27/12/2024 19:26

I watched it again recently. I think it’s one of the best television series ever.

FknOmniShambles · 27/12/2024 19:26

It is perfection from start to finish.
Tried to get husband into it but he declared it to be "wank" so I'll have to keep enjoying kt on my own 😂

BrickRedLipstick · 27/12/2024 19:27

You’re right @FknOmniShambles It is perfection.

UndeniablyGenXmasOfAWomblingMerryType · 27/12/2024 19:32

Yes, it was excellent. None of the annoying attempts you sometimes see to 'improve' the story or change the attitudes to be in line with late 20th/early 21st century social mores.

hobbledyhoy · 27/12/2024 19:36

Love it, one of my favourite ever TV series.

I must watch it at least 4 times a year. Alison Steadman absolutely nails Mrs Bennet.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/12/2024 19:36

I've heard they are doing a new one - it's not required

I mostly enjoyed it at the time but found Alison Steadman so shrill and over the top that she came close to spoiling it for me.

I prefer the 1980 version. Impeccable casting, acting and script.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/12/2024 19:46

I prefer the 1980 version.

Shock

We kind of people. Capital. Capital.

IKnowAristotle · 27/12/2024 19:52

I have rewatched recently (mainly due to the joke in Barbie) and it was even better than I remembered.

LightDrizzle · 27/12/2024 19:53

Perfection!

Although my controversial opinion is that Alison Steadman isn’t as strong in her role as the rest of the cast are in theirs, I think Imelda Staunton would have nailed it. Steadman is not bad enough to keep it from being the GOAT though.

DD1 and I quite often use Lady Catherine De Bourgh’s line “… if I had of learned, I should have been a true proficient” about ourselves or others when veering towards pompous over confidence unbacked by evidence.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/12/2024 19:54

@Deadringer

I'm sure he kept a very good sort of shop before his elevation to the knighthood Smile

@LightDrizzle

I say that as well!

I watched it for the very first time this winter, and loved it - but I can’t help but think that they did Susannah Harker dirty with the hairstyle. It really didn’t suit her.

She looked like she could be the sister of the fella from Resident Alien, and she’s totally beautiful in real life.

Amaranthasweetandfair · 27/12/2024 19:58

I was 16, a massive Jane Austen fan, and it was sort of life changing television for me. I just love Jennifer Ehle as Lizzy, was such perfect casting. Susannah Harker and Julia Sawahla shouldn't have worked but they sort of did.

Deadringer · 27/12/2024 20:01

*That should of course say MY kind of people.
Capital. Capital.

beetr00 · 27/12/2024 20:02

2005 version ftw 😊

Pallisers · 27/12/2024 20:03

"if I had of learned, I should have been a true proficient”

We say this about our dog all the time.

It was just out on video when I was having my first baby - we brought it to the hospital and watched while I was in labour! We re-watch it regularly and our kids love it too. I think Alison Steadman was excellent. Would not have wanted anyone else. Elizabeth and Darcy were perfectly cast.

LunaNorth · 27/12/2024 20:06

See? I found it distracting.
