There’s a 1980 version? Not sure I’ve seen it. I’ve seen the 1940s version, the 2005 and the 1995 version. For me, it’s always the 1995 version. It’s brilliant, it’s escapism, the costumes. It’s my happy place and my friend gave me a book on the making of it, such a good book

Semiramide · 27/12/2024 20:34

The 1995 version is the best by far.

Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy were perfect.

But Mrs Bennett was way over the top.

And poor Jane's horrible hairstyle...

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/12/2024 20:35

Poor Jane. I do not blame Poor Jane you know.

The 1980 version was the first version I ever saw. I would have been in my early teens and watched it with my Mum. It was a time when the BBC always seemed to be showing dramatisations of classic novels. I think I've still got it on dvd somewhere.

Fay Weldon adapted it for tv and did a brilliant job.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_and_Prejudice_(1980_TV_series)#:~:text=Pride%20and%20Prejudice%20is%20a,Darcy.

The 90s version was great except for bloody Alison Steadman hamming it up as Mrs Bennett.

As far as film versions go, I'm not keen on the 1940s version. Laurence Olivier is good and Greer Garson is ok but too many of the others are silly caricatures, especially the younger sisters. I also get annoyed by the unnecessary updating of the costumes.

I do like the Keira Knightly version.

WeegieWan · 27/12/2024 20:49

I adore it - but once you know Susannah Harker was pregnant while filming it, you can't help looking for the bump-hiding strategies, from voluminous shawls and cloaks to flowers and books being carried in front of her, to only being shot from the shoulders up... Slightly freaky to think her son must be nearly 30 now!

JewelleryCat · 27/12/2024 20:53

Thank you for the link @cariadlet. I definitely haven’t seen that version. I really don’t like the 1940s version, it’s adapted too much I think like with the archery scene for example and I’m not that keen on the 2005 one either but it does have Judi Dench in and it’s good points

lovemetomybones · 27/12/2024 20:55

It's wonderful and you are right nothing made since compares to it. However there is this guy on insta who has remade every scene and it is fantastic! Bingleydteas his insta is called- very very funny!

Toddlerteaplease · 27/12/2024 20:55

My family always quote from this version!

Wonderful! Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth was such a hot combo. Didn't they have a fling during filming as well? Who can blame them...

Is it available to stream?

I bought it on digital so I'm not sure

@JewelleryCat The archery scene annoyed me too.

I don't mind scenes from books being omitted from films due to time constraints but don't like scenes that are made up or speeches that the character in the novel wouldn't have said.

I vaguely remember being annoyed by changes (in the 1940s film version) to the part of the novel where Lady Catherine de Bourgh turns up in her carriage to speak to Elizabeth but can't for the life of me remember what the changes were.

The one on instagram is Somebenfen, it's hilarious!

motheronthedancefloor · 27/12/2024 21:10

Has anyone seen 'lost in austen'? Its not canon but Lydia and Georgiana are so much better and age appropriate. I liked the Georgiana storyline twist. I also think Alex Kingston is a brilliant and more believable Mrs Bennet.

The Other Bennett Sister is being adapted by the BBC so look forward to that in a year or so.

I'm really looking forward to that. I absolutely love the novel.

I've read a few prequels, sequels and retellings from other characters' viewpoints but that's by far my favourite.

CrashThere · 27/12/2024 21:17

@LightDrizzle , it was "If I had ever learnt, I should have been a great proficient.”
Jane Austen would never have written "had of".

I watched it for the very first time this winter, and loved it - but I can’t help but think that they did Susannah Harker dirty with the hairstyle. It really didn’t suit her.

She looked like she could be the sister of the fella from Resident Alien, and she’s totally beautiful in real life.

I think she just didn’t suit the hairstyles and necklines. Which is a real pity, as she’s supposed to be prettier than Lizzy. That was one of the few things I liked about the Joe Wright film — that they’d cast Rosamund Pike as Jane.

Melodyfair · 27/12/2024 21:18

It certainly taught me that my staircase should not be too steep or too shallow for someone of my position, I have a most serviceable staircase, and of course shelves in my closet the way lady Catherine De Bourgh would specify!

@CrashThere - Oh no! I am doing my best Mr Collins grovel for you, hat in hands!

She historically would have been considered beautiful in that period, she had the neoclassical looks that were considered handsome for that time, the nose, eyes and lips are like a statue of a Greek goddess. But I guess it depends on our view of beauty, if you look at Barbara Streisand in the regency scenes in a film called ‘on a clear day you can see forever’ she would have been a showstopper in that period.

OneDaySucks · 27/12/2024 21:23

I always watch it on New Years Day - it is usually on Yesterday channel? Or U and W (or whatever it is now called)
