Enjoyed this, and liked the new detective.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/12/2024 23:25

I enjoyed it but the ending was confusing

So they killed for each other ?

I do like the ending where they explain the who how why

Shame about his mum

I thought it was dire. Too long, thin plot, horrible rude shouty new detective, lots of looking meaningfully into the distance, far too much screen time for the bloke in the vest and the editing was terrible.

Davros · 23/12/2024 10:54

@squashyhat hilarious and accurate I'm sure! I'm looking forward to finishing it 😹

Floralnomad · 23/12/2024 10:59

That could have been cleared up in 30 minutes , really dragged out . We are not regular viewers since Kris Marshall left but I like Don Gilet so thought we’d try , not sure I will bother with the series .

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/12/2024 12:46

The 90m are too long

60 is a good time limit

I enjoyed it but then I'm addicted to DiP. It wasn't the best episode, but it was OK. I liked Don Gilet. The new inspector will settle down. They always do. Every single new inspector (he's the fifth, by my count) starts off full of quirks and everybody finds him annoying and odd. By the end he's much less quirky and everybody loves him.

How odd to cast Marcus Brigstocke for that tiny little role and give him absolutely nothing to do.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/12/2024 15:04

Is Marcus known then ? He looked familiar but not sure his know of him

Can you explain the killing/ending to me @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

With great difficulty! It didn't make a lot of sense, but I think it was something like this.

Horrible Histories Dad had brought gun with him. Let's pass over how he got it through customs on the way into St Marie from the UK. He wanted to threaten the man who wrote the Christmas #1 and made Serena pretend to be the singer because HH Dad's Mum wasn't pretty enough.

HH Dad's son got hold of the gun and was waving it about. Marcus Brigstocke Santa somehow recognised it was a real gun. He stopped HH Dad on the beach and there was an argument about it. Gun went off and MB Santa died instantly. This was around 9.30pm. The hotel man (who was Bear in Doctors until it ended) heard the noise and realised what had happened. Immediately spotted that he could use this to his advantage. Took the gun and hotfooted it over to the songwriter's house and shot him. Raced back to the hotel.

HH Dad had not been idle in the mean time either. He went to the road where somehow Bear knew that the local man dressed as Santa (Tyrus?) would be passing at that time, and he shot at him with another gun, supplied by Bear. Both shots fired at 10.15pm. Then he hurried back to the hotel and told his son to go down to Reception and tell them there was a Dead Santa on the beach and he had just heard a shot and seen a man running away. This was a lie, which nobody questioned. Bear meanwhile went to the place where Tyrus was shot and planted bullets from the gun he'd used to kill the songwriter. Bear kept that gun, HH Dad kept the other gun, which he was then found with on the beach. Ballistics evidence proved that wasn't the murder gun.

Looks even more like a load of old toot when written out like this! Xmas Grin

(Marcus Brigstocke has done a lot of stuff on Radio 4 so if you're not a radio listener, he might not be as familiar. Not sure about acting on TV.)

Wasn't gunman the scoutmaster guy in ghosts. He looked very different

Made me laugh how they desperately need a detective from UK, just why?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/12/2024 15:35

Yes, that's him. I don't know why I mentioned HH as I've never seen it, and love Ghosts!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/12/2024 15:38

St Marie is a British Overseas Territory so not a sovereign nation in its own right. They fall back on the UK for things they can't source themselves, like fully trained detective inspectors. This makes little sense, as they are extremely good at producing fully trained detective sergeants, who all happen to be stunningly good-looking young local women. We don't enter the Paraverse* for stories that make sense, though.

*This word has been invented by the marketing team pushing Death in Paradise, Beyond Paradise and Return to Paradise. Cringey but it works, I suppose.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/12/2024 16:04

Oh. I didn't reliese his mum was the singer who got the boot man from ghosts /hh

Ffs

I must watch more closely

But I thought it was a "French" island like Guadeloupe (which it actually is)?

Agree about not liking them at first. Same with Return to Paradise but it doesn't take long to warm to them.

I like that the Don Gilet character is dressed appropriately for the climate while the others have been so overdressed - they must have been melting!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/12/2024 16:22

I think it's supposed to be an island that's passed from one Empire to another. It's filmed on Guadeloupe and some of the funding comes from France, so they had to have a strong French influence.
