The call the midwife christmas special is on bbc 1 in 2 parts. The first part will be shown on christmas day at 20:00. The second part will be shown at 19:30 on boxing day. Series 14 will start on 5th January. I am suprised that it has not been renamed as the doctor Turner show.

Either that or he will return in a few episodes to say his marriage is over and he quite fancies Rosalind

God I hope he doesn't come back.

Dr. Turner was particularly creepy and cringy tonight 🤢🤢

The blonde midwife working at the homeless shelter is also boring AF.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2025 22:57

That is not how flower festivals are done. The entire church is usually overtaken by themed displays. Most of the characters just annoy me now. The Buckles and Reggie most of all!

I thought the low point was Dr Turner Mansplaining midwifery to Trixie for a straightforward birth.

She did not need to be told how to deliver that baby.

AsWithGlad · 12/01/2025 23:03

My favourite moment for several series was when Arlene said to Trixie, “Stop calling me Sweetie, I’m not a child,” or something similar.

Nice choice of music tonight.

Cyril has only been in his social worker job for 10 minutes, how does he have lots and lots of accrued leave?

He must have carried some over from the engineering department?

Lalgarh · 13/01/2025 00:28

So the Cypriot wife ended up cajoled into taking back her Clap-riddled husband because he came up with an "I went with her coz she looked like you!" Type excuse? And the incidental music with it's strings swelled and all was well?

LEAVE THE BASTARD

I was hoping it would turn out all the men were catching gonorrhea from Shelagh.

I watched Goodnight Mister Tom at Christmas and Violet Buckle was William Beech's horrible mum.

Violet Buckle also in Shameless as the first wife

No one bothered to turn up to the flower show did they.

No. If they did i missed it. The episode was sending me to sleep

I hope Cyril doesn't come back. The blonde midwife is dreadful. not sure if she is a terrible actor or its the writing.
I thought they were going to start teaching midwives. so far they have only had 4.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2025 23:00

She did not need to be told how to deliver that baby.

Exactly. I bet that doctor turner will end up delivering every baby single handed.

The homeless man actor was Sergeant Willis in Downton Abbey.

Good spot - I was racking my brains.

Sadly, I think they are struggling for things to do with Cyril's character so a departure seems most likely.

Which is a bit of a shame, because he could return with a new Lucille and have interesting stories as a social worker. Yet again, the series suffers for having to revolve around Dr St Turner.

LouisvilleSlugger · 13/01/2025 09:55

Last night’s episode was very boring.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/01/2025 09:56

What happened to the great silence? It was a big thing in the early series.

VaddaABeetch · 13/01/2025 10:17

I was surprised that the saintly Sheelagh didn’t instruct the brothels in hygienic & safe sex. All stainless steel & wipe down Formica. The sex workers could study for exams in their down time.

TheFifthTellytubby · 13/01/2025 12:08

When SMJ was asking what everyone's favourite spring flowers were so she could include them in the flower arrangement and someone said "crocuses" - did anyone else think "good luck finding them in May"? 😂

InMySpareTime · 13/01/2025 13:04

@TheFifthTellytubby yep, clearly the writers just thought "spring flowers" and then "May is spring" and didn't connect those two thoughts.
My crocuses are just starting to come up now, they'll be over by mid-February.

VaddaABeetch · 13/01/2025 13:29

They showed daffodils blooming earlier. Obviously Poplar has its own micro climate

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/01/2025 16:27

i often see daffodils in January

It was supposed to be May? Don’t think I’ve seen daffodils in May?

KohlaParasaurus · 13/01/2025 16:56

I have daffodils in flower in my garden in May. I chose some varieties that bloom late. Not crocuses, though. Even this far north they're over by March.

Taytocrisps · 13/01/2025 17:38

My hopes were raised, and then dashed, when Violet's stint as Mayor came to an end. I quite like Violet and Fred, but Violet has become very pompous since she became Mayor. She wasn't like that at the beginning. But I suppose her position as Mayor is a convenient plot device to show other events happening in Poplar at the time - like the flower show. I quite enjoy these little reminders of life back then. There used to be a horticultural show when I was growing up in the '70s and '80s. Women (it was mostly women iirc) would bake cakes or make jam or display flower arrangements etc. We won an ice bucket in a raffle at the show one year. It sat proudly in a cabinet for many years, but was never actually used for holding ice cubes, given that my parents never threw dinner parties Grin.

Has someone been reading our many posts about Cyril and Lucille?

Was I the only viewer who rolled my eyes when Shelagh and Millicent began quizzing the the prostitutes about their sexual partners? Very convenient that the factory manager had shipped in a group of employees and could account for them all. In reality, they'd never have traced all of the men, especially given he transient nature of London's population. And is it likely that the brothel owner/manager would let the nurses in to quiz the girls about stds on the premises? Probably not the best advertisement for business! Anyway, all gripes aside, stds were a serious matter back then (and probably still are today). I wonder how the medical community coped with the emergence of AIDS in the '80s? I watched 'It's a Sin' (highly recommended, if you haven't seen it already) but that shows the epidemic from the perspective of the victims and their friends and families. It would be interesting to see something from the perspective of the medical staff who treated the patients.

witchycat2 · 13/01/2025 17:49

I doubt CTM will go into the 80s @Taytocrisps, but maybe they should do a spin off showing Dr Turner coming out of retirement to sort the AIDs epidemic. Shelagh and Millicent can go out with their chipboards and it will all be sorted in a jiffy.

My dad was greek cypriot and those accents are nothing like i have ever heard!

I thought the same! Really odd accents. Almost comical.
