The call the midwife christmas special is on bbc 1 in 2 parts. The first part will be shown on christmas day at 20:00. The second part will be shown at 19:30 on boxing day. Series 14 will start on 5th January. I am suprised that it has not been renamed as the doctor Turner show.

The writing and acting was really poor. It was embarrassing.

ssd · 25/12/2024 21:20

I quite enjoyed it

Is Trixie still with her husband? I thought she left for New York?

I thought she had as well. I thought her character had been written out.

TinselAngel · 25/12/2024 22:15

I particularly enjoyed how the convicts could have been straight out of the Famous Five.

PinkFrogss · 25/12/2024 23:54

Definitely not great, I don’t think splitting in two has worked at all Sad

Solaire18381 · 26/12/2024 00:39

Saw it and thought it was portraying the early 60's still.

Didn't realise that it's now going into the 70's! I wasn't around then to compare or remember, but thought it still looked 60's to me. I know it's sanitised a bit, but had no resemblance to any programmes or documentaries that I've seen which were filmed in the early 70's!

BerriesCones · 26/12/2024 01:07

This is Christmas 69, so will be the 70s in the new series early next year.

TinselQueen · 26/12/2024 01:10

I had a coat with the little flowers on the zip line .

BESTAUNTB · 26/12/2024 01:17

Not much chat about CtM tonight. Are people going off it, or has G&S overshadowed it this year?

I thought it was the usual saccharine, occasionally wooden stuff but I enjoyed it. Phyllis, Miss Higgins, Sr Julienne, the Buckles as good as always.

I like the Trixie brother actor but they have kinda shoehorned him in. Surely Trixie would’ve sold the flat, she and her husband desperately needed the money.

1968, I thought. Google says that was the year of the Hong Kong flu outbreak.

RedRiverShore5 · 26/12/2024 07:26

I enjoyed it but I have just also watched Virgin River so my bar is set quite low. Looking forward to tonight's and new series, It's is supposed to be end of 1969 and new series is 1970, Laura Main (Mrs Turner) mentioned it in an interview.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/12/2024 07:31

I stand corrected! Wikipedia says UK had a bad outbreak over the winter of 1969-1970. I was a child then and don't remember this at all.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 26/12/2024 09:25

It’s so weak now compared to the original. It’s like a channel 5 Christmas movie of how Americans like to think the UK was.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 26/12/2024 09:27

The whole bit with the woman bleeding after birth was laughably stupid, leaving the baby on her and the ‘oh, she really bad, now she’s fine’.

eleanorwish · 26/12/2024 09:58

Anyone recognise the actress who played the mum of the evicted family? She was in the first series of Traitors.
As far as dates go, each series seems to cover a single year.

TinselAngel · 26/12/2024 10:22

I gave up on the last series in despair. How did Trixie end up in NY?

Snowmenschilliballs · 26/12/2024 10:31

Quite, I thought they were meant to be on the verge of bankruptcy which is why we lost her husband.

Thank you! I couldn’t think why I knew her.

It was like a bad parody. I kept expecting French and Saunders to appear. The contrast between the original show, based on the books, and this travesty is immeasurable. I'm sure all (or most of) the cast CAN act, but apparently the director told them not to bother. Mind you, with that script it would hardly have been worth it...

Yes that was ridiculous leaving her holding the baby

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/12/2024 13:14

Hoping tonight's will be better!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2024 13:44

The stupid nun praying instead of helping save the mums life. Pretty sure both God and Sr wouldn't be impressed by that!

TwinklyFawn · 26/12/2024 14:29

I cannot remember the last time that i enjoyed a call the midwife christmas special. I might give it another go on the iplayer tomorrow. I will probably end up turning off after 5 minutes like i did last night lol. I have also forgotten what has happened in the last few series. I can remember a lot from the earlier series.

It's been bonkers for years having had a great start. The doctor couple are ridiculous parodies and it feels like McGann and his wife are writing self indulgent saccharine bilge highlighting historical "ishoos" with the doctor being some kind of visionary ahead of his time. At least that's what I remember from watching it a few years ago. I can't believe it's still limping along with the same kind of theme.

I know someone who has been in it and they knew it was rubbish but it paid the bills. I guess everyone involved is milking it until the BBC wises up and puts it out of its misery.
