The call the midwife christmas special is on bbc 1 in 2 parts. The first part will be shown on christmas day at 20:00. The second part will be shown at 19:30 on boxing day. Series 14 will start on 5th January. I am suprised that it has not been renamed as the doctor Turner show.

Feel as if we see less and less of Sister Julienne.

I thought the same! Really odd accents. Almost comical.

Strange because the actress has a greek cypriot name! But i was born in the 60s in North London so we knew a lot of other Cypriot immigrants and the accents just did not sound right.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 13/01/2025 19:34

Last week's episode with the 'immaculate conception' made me briefly consider a storyline whereby Angela, a sainted Turner has an accidental pregnancy later in the 70s resulting in an abortion or even having the baby.

I thought the character was already 12. CtM has been renewed for several more series so I thought it could be possible in a few years' time at 16+. But actually I think she's only 10-11 at the moment so the series may be over by then!

It's probably just me wishing for grittier storylines and something more complex to happen in the Turner household. It might also bring up thoughts about her own mother/adoption.

witchycat2 · 13/01/2025 19:37

Apparently Angela is supposed to be 11. I think CTM will be over before she has any storylines

I hope Cyril doesn't come back. The blonde midwife is dreadful. not sure if she is a terrible actor or its the writing.
I thought they were going to start teaching midwives. so far they have only had 4.

And two of them never got a line!

Re schools, I went to a standard state primary in London and in the 70s we had thick wool blazers of the sort you’d only see in private schools now. And ties. So it may just be changing school uniform.

Viviennemary · 13/01/2025 19:49

I watched a bit of it and was bored. It's had its day I think.

I was hoping it would turn out all the men were catching gonorrhea from Shelagh.

I watched Goodnight Mister Tom at Christmas and Violet Buckle was William Beech's horrible mum.

She was in Doc Martin too, as Bert Large's love interest 😆

suburburban · 13/01/2025 20:29

Gosh was that the same actress

CarefulN0w · 13/01/2025 20:34

Does anyone remember her in soldier, soldier?

He had two love interests. She was the earlier one. Think she worked in the pharmacy when Mrs Tishell was ill. The second one ran a shop.

My favourite moment for several series was when Arlene said to Trixie, “Stop calling me Sweetie, I’m not a child,” or something similar.

Arlene

I liked that too.

I asked my Mum (who had Me in 1965, age 21) over Christmas, if midwives or Health Visitors etc ever called her Sweetie and she said No.
She did say that a certain class, like Trixie's, might have used the word but she mixed with all classes at art school and never heard anyone use it.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 13/01/2025 20:59

Those Cypriot accents were nothing like I’ve heard either. My dad was Cypriot and I’ve grown up surrounded by Cypriots (especially of the London variety!) and no accents sounded like that. All a bit odd sounding.

KohlaParasaurus · 13/01/2025 21:11

I wonder if Trixie picked up "Sweetie" across the pond. I know it's only the same land mass and not the same country, but around that time I had a lovely Canadian auntie (my grandfather's brother's wife) who called everyone Sweetie.

No she's used it for years.

Pretty sure she’s been using it for years, unless my memory is playing trick (perfectly possible). Although she could have picked it up in Portafino!

FagsMagsandBags · 13/01/2025 21:28

I think Trixie has been using sweetie pretty much from the beginning of the show.

I hope Cyril does come back. I like him.

killedanotherhouseplant · 13/01/2025 21:59

Trixie has to say "Sweetie" and Phyllis has to call someone "lass". In the old days, Chummy had to call someone "old thing". It's just lazy writing, so we know which character is speaking.

And of course drippy Shelagh and her "Ooh Patrick..."

DefinitelyMaryBerry · 13/01/2025 22:37

If I remember rightly, the Turners moved out of Poplar a while back, they got their pretty little house in the suburbs with a garden for the rabbit. So the kids won't be at a Poplar school and will be somewhere nice and posh I'm sure.

I gave up watching this episode before the end. It's just boring now. It lost me with Mrs Higgins going round the brothel and facing up to the owner. Just no. Like anyone running a brothel is going to be intimidated by Mrs Higgins. She'd be shown out by a couple of heavies surely?

BESTAUNTB · 13/01/2025 22:42

Annabelle (Violet Buckle) was also Richard Hillman’s ex wife in Corrie. She was his first victim. He buried her in a plot that was being developed by Steve McDonald iirc.

Im glad that the Cyril /Lucille story is being adddressd. Hopefully with divorce rather than with Cyril staying in Jamaica, because I think the social work element adds something to the show.

Rosalind is a dreary character. The other newbie hasn’t featured much since her domestic abuse storyline. I’m not sure either is adding much to the show. Nothing against the actors.

Fred as handyman was great but I get why his role has changed since he met Violet and started working with her in the shop.

I’m reminded of the ep when his daughter visited from Australia. That was a lovely one.

BESTAUNTB · 13/01/2025 22:44

And I wouldn’t be sending an elderly woman into a brothel on her own. That’s a two-person job surely? Things could’ve got really ugly.

Rhubarb01 · 13/01/2025 23:10

CarefulN0w · 13/01/2025 20:34

Does anyone remember her in soldier, soldier?

She was alternately hilarious and annoying as Joy Wilton, but the episode when 'Tone' is killed still brings a lump to my throat.

Yes, although that’s going back a bit now!

TwinklyFawn · 14/01/2025 12:50

I am glad that the Cyril storyline is been addressed. I did hope that he would get a divorce so that he could move on.

Unless she gets pregnant.

Xenia · 14/01/2025 22:36

I liked the latest episode not least because my father was a psychiatrist at the same time and all those drugs which were so much better than what went before were all part of our conversations at home at the time.

They got the 'immaculate conception' wrong, actually. It means Mary was born without original sin, conceived without it. It has never meant that Mary conceived a child without sex. In the 1970s at school our teacher told us about a mistake on an O level exam paper - Catholics know what the immaculate conception really meant but some others taking the paper did not.
