The call the midwife christmas special is on bbc 1 in 2 parts. The first part will be shown on christmas day at 20:00. The second part will be shown at 19:30 on boxing day. Series 14 will start on 5th January. I am suprised that it has not been renamed as the doctor Turner show.

How realistic would it be that a social worker would have just been able to buy a flight (?) to Jamaica on a whim? How much would it have cost? According to Reddit it would have been six months pay!!

Who was the homeless window dresser - what else has he been in. Looked familiar.

witchycat2 · 12/01/2025 21:24

The NHS wasn't in New York. Isn't it that she wants to keep some sort of UK thing up-to-date?

Even so, a return trip on BA in 1970 London to New York would be £4,280 in today's money (according to Google). Matthew is supposed to be bankrupt and Trixie won't be on a great wage. It's ridiculously unrealistic.

She wants to keep her NMC nursing registration up to date. I know now you need to do a certain amount of nursing hours in order to be able to revalidate your registration every 3 years and continue working as a nurse so perhaps she couldn’t use her qualifications in the US and her registration would have lapsed before they returned back to the UK if she didn’t do this work. Although it seems to me she’s really just here to throw her Lady Aylward title around and try to marry off her clearly gay brother.

BerriesCones · 12/01/2025 21:39

Were the yay twins wearing brownie uniforms at the flower show? I thought they looked like they had secondary school uniforms in the first episode. I wonder what age brownies ends.
Poor Rosalind. I hope she finds someone else.

Evenstar · 12/01/2025 21:41

I think Cyril would have probably gone by boat, I don’t know how much that was

The return at Christmas was via a visit to the fabled godmother so presumably the godmother picked up the tab.

I think she also mentioned that her UK qualifications aren't valid in the US.

At last Cyril has remembered that Lucille exists hopefully we will get some sort of resolution to their story. I hope they conceive whole he is in Jamaica and he decides to stay.

PinkFrogss · 12/01/2025 21:49

Very interested in Rosalind’s backstory, I seem to remember something being hunted at last series and saw some hints this episode too.

Brownies is usually ages 7-10

FagsMagsandBags · 12/01/2025 22:01

Trixie's qualifications wouldn't be valid in New York and even if they were and she worked there she'd lose her UK registration if she didn't do some nursing over here. It's an unlikely scenario but not one that's been totally made up.

I enjoyed tonight's episode and thought it was a lot less saccharine than usual.

I hope they sort it out for Cyril. I'm thinking that Lucille wants out of the marriage given the tone of her letters which are very unloving and her making no attempt to see him again. But I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I don't think there was shit loads of Dr Turner tonight. He was there in dribs and drabs and he'd have to be there for the gonorrhea. I had a look and there was an Act passed in 1974 which included stuff about contact tracing. My guess is that prior to that contact tracing was done on a more local level so what we saw tonight would have been what happened although probably with other GPs brought into the conversation although to put that on the screen would mean too much in the way of other characters, time, blah.

We're not getting enough of Nurse Phyllis this season and I'd like a bit more of her please.

PrimalScreaming · 12/01/2025 22:03

Where were we left with Nancy and her fiance? No sign of her tonight...

FagsMagsandBags · 12/01/2025 22:03

Re Lord Trixie or Sir Trixie being bankrupt. He definitely was but Trixie was talking about how well the business was doing last week or over the Christmas specials so I think it's fair to say that they're doing fine now, hence she can afford to fly over to the UK. It's not like she's living the high life in Poplar.

It's a shame for the actor if he has to leave because the Lucille actress doesn't want to be in it any more.

Thanks. Maybe they are at prep school not secondary/grammar school. The uniforms looked very smart.

InMySpareTime · 12/01/2025 22:12

I thought the low point was Dr Turner Mansplaining midwifery to Trixie for a straightforward birth.

Were there prep schools within spit of Poplar in 1970? It's quite hard to imagine.

Yes I recognised him too!

AsWithGlad · 12/01/2025 22:24

The safest thing will be if Lucille dies and then Cyril can remarry conscience-free.

Could she be killed doing something marvellously selfless, possibly while Cyril is still on the plane?

Assuming the actress doesn’t want to return to the series, that is.

Supertillypops · 12/01/2025 22:24

The homeless man actor was Sergeant Willis in Downton Abbey.

I think probably grammar rather than private (Timothy I think was a grammar school child?). However, it would have been easier in those days for mum or day to drive across London. From Popular into the City (City of London Girls School), or further West would not have been excessively hard. In many cases children would have travelled on their own by bus.

No one bothered to turn up to the flower show did they.

She didn’t get much of a send off, perhaps there will be trouble in paradise and she’ll be back shortly.

Has Timothy left?

I was rather hoping CTM had taken a turn and the twist would be Timothy was spreading the gonorrhoea.

In the storyline he’s currently on placement, I believe a poster on this thread said the actor is busy at university.
