We played the Michael McIntyre drinking game recently. Every time he says, “darling”, we down a shot. Good job we weren’t playing it tonight. We’d be so wasted.

Whether he was truly surprised or just knowingly pretending to be surprised as part of the joke, there's surely no denying that he often does draw out/labour some jokes - as he did tonight?!

I'm sure there's always the temptation for comedians to figure out that, if they found that funny, I can keep saying other extremely similar things, and they must then find them funny as well, as it's effectively the same joke... but there's a limit after which people just snap, and then you ruin all the good work of the original bit that was genuinely original and funny.

I'm not a particular fan of Ken Dodd (for example), but he would always be several steps ahead of the audience with a barrage of humour, whilst they were still catching up with the previous joke that he'd just told; you never want it to be the other way around, with the audience ahead of (and getting wearied by) you.

Ken Dodd live was side busting, we saw him in a Lincoln theatre. He made it his work to play all the small theatres in Britain as they need the income . So not only funny but a good man.

GFlower · 15/12/2024 01:01

I barely laughed either, and the ending was so unspectacular!

SnowFrogJelly · 15/12/2024 01:31

He's not funny!

HelenWheels · 15/12/2024 05:44

oh I laughed so much
I always used to like him but this was excellent

TizerorFizz · 15/12/2024 09:07

I’m assuming plenty of people do think he’s funny as he sells out venues. We thought it was funny but we don’t watch him all the time.

LemograssLollipop · 15/12/2024 09:28

I enjoyed it, the silent letters bit was great. Lots to make me properly laugh. Agree the ending was a bit abrupt and not very good.
I got a bit sidetracked spotting the celebs although they all seemed seated near each other .... Michael Sheen, Anton du Beke, Holly Willoughby and Stanley Tucci.

HelenWheels · 15/12/2024 09:38

oh i only saw Michael Sheen

BiscottiToffee · 15/12/2024 09:54

PaintedPottery · 14/12/2024 22:10

I enjoyed it. My 13 year old is a huge fan and was crying with laughter!

So were we!!

Especially loved the invisible letter day part

She was crying at the dog food bit 🤣🤣

LemograssLollipop · 15/12/2024 10:44

@HelenWheels Anton du Beke was same row as Michael Sheen, next seat but one

anythinginapinch · 15/12/2024 10:55

I laughed loads. It was great

LlynTegid · 15/12/2024 10:57

The BBC has form for keeping people on or series on well past their best. Is this another case, has humour changed?

daffodilandtulip · 15/12/2024 11:42

I think humour surrounding alcohol has definitely changed. That joke might have been hilarious a decade ago, but seems rather "mother in law" joke now.

Onand · 15/12/2024 12:58

WhoStoleYourHighHorse · 14/12/2024 23:42

He is simply not funny. I can’t watch anything he is on, he has mastered mediocrity.

I think that’s why I can’t watch him- he’s plays a comedic buffoon for the BGT viewers and I’m a celeb devotees just the same formula churned out every year. Mediocre humour for the adverts demographic.

We loved the mattress story! 🤣

Sidebeforeself · 15/12/2024 13:05

I can take him or leave him but i want to watch it now!

By the way , he doesn’t write all his own material ( although of course it’s all about the delivery) . Just saying its not necessarily all his fault!

CombatLingerie · 15/12/2024 13:06

I think MM must be one of those people who ‘know where the bodies are buried’. It’s the only explanation for someone so talentless to have had the length of time on TV that he has had.

purpleme12 · 15/12/2024 13:11

Surely it's just that comedy is subjective!!

I'm sure I don't like other comedians that people on this thread like!
It doesn't mean that they're not funny for that person!

Chasingsquirrels · 15/12/2024 13:15

My friend got tickets to the Fri evening filming (it was filmed over 2 shows) and I went with her.
I have always found him somewhat amusing but not laugh out loud, my friend really likes him.
She was in stitches, I smiled a bit and had a couple of laughs.

I wouldn't go out of my way to see him live again.

Nc546888 · 15/12/2024 13:28

I found it funny and it definitely made me laugh

This is semi-serious, but I wonder if our nation's experiences of Boris over the past years have sharply reframed our collective fascination with and tolerance of 'lovable comedic buffoons'?!

BlackStrayCat · 15/12/2024 14:30

DD (16) and me found it hilarious.

Ken Dodd/Bob Monkhouse? Really?

As PP said, it is personal (and often generational) what you find funny.

Stanley Tucci was crying with laughter!

I was shocked to hear a too much wine joke in 2024, as much as I'm a wine drinker

I was looking forward to it as well, just to be sat with a straight face
