Is it me or is this fucking ridiculous, no spoilers, I'm only in the first episode but did you persevere?

OP posts:
lto2019 · 14/12/2024 00:50

I've only watched the first episode and wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a parody it was so bad. The cast are good and I haven't seen Sarah Lancashire in anything before that I haven't enjoyed and wondered if it was just me.

Sceptical123 · 14/12/2024 01:24

I think it’s ridiculous how she was having a 3 month affair and we are meant to sympathise with her bc she is a spy and never loved her husband - and yet SPOILER ALERT - she has wanted to leave him more than once and take the kids - but then is angry to the point of attempting to kill her replacement. Her husband previously turns down the younger, beautiful replacement bc he loves his wife and is aware she may not feel the same. He reassures her he loves her and the kids and his life with them.

And then right at the end she is angry/upset that the man she lied to for the majority of their incredible short but oh so meaningful ‘relationship’ (who she risks her and others lives for to avenge) had in fact lied to her. She is heartbroken, then is rewarded by the fact she is told he loved her after all and put himself at great risk to protect her. And then she presumably goes back to her husband (who she is also lying to for the last 10 + years or so, but that’s ok bc she’s using him for a spy agency who we are repeatedly told sell secrets to the highest bidder, it’s not even to protect her family or the country) and kids to enjoy ‘the perfect Christmas’. Awwwwww isn’t that sweet? 🤮

Now reverse the genders.

It was shit. You can probably tell I don’t like it.

There have been other threads on this and I thank the poster who dropped this

I'm enjoying it but despite never living in London, I'm laughing at the easy parking and empty streets.

A person in a full face black helmet walks unnoticed into a Chinese restaurant, shoots a guy in the corner, exits and then sits right outside in his car for a minute or two whilst literally no-one comes rushing out screaming into the street ?!!
But DH says it gets better after the second episode 🤔

TurtlesDoNotPetsMake · 14/12/2024 01:37

Keira looks a bit like Brooke Shields.

Okay, I'm not going to sleep now so I will investigate matters and see if I find Black Doves worth it <rolls up sleeves>

Radishknot · 14/12/2024 06:31

I’m persevering but unsure. Don’t find Keira Knightly very convincing playing the hard man & just think of Paddington when Sam speaks & too much filler/flashbacks. But London looks good & it’s funny in places.

WhereAreWeNow · 14/12/2024 06:31

I think it's meant to be silly, not realistic. I enjoyed it.

ChickenNuggetFromSpencies · 14/12/2024 06:34

Gave up after few episodes. Just pretty much meh and as pp mentioned. The chinese restaurant skit was just ridiculous

Some reviewer called it "if tarantino redid love actually, but it's worse"

BlackChunkyBoots · 14/12/2024 06:38

Take it in the spirit is was intended. Total popcorn telly. Silly but engaging.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 14/12/2024 06:50

The ‘save my wimp of my ex boyfriend’ by moving down a metal fire escape with him attached like a limpet, turtle style to his back, with wimpy ex eyes tight shut meanwhile shooting multiple hitmen and then they dreamily have a moment is possibly the most unrealistic scene known to mankind.

Radishknot · 14/12/2024 07:15

😆😆

thesilvermoon · 14/12/2024 12:18

In the end, I just relaxed and enjoyed it. I think it would have been better if they had kept the same tone throughout, and made it more of a spy thriller. But now I'm looking forward to season 2. I really enjoyed Ben Wishaw's character.

ANEC · 14/12/2024 12:20

OMG, I and DH loved it. A definite binge watch.

packitinagain · 14/12/2024 12:35

It was daft popcorn viewing but I did enjoy Wishaw's character - he was the only decent actor in it. Except Tracey Ullman. I feel a bit sorry for KK as I think she has suffered the rom com poison that comes with it. Her previous "spy" part in gchq was much much better than this and I think she suffered from poor writing and plot more than anything.

heathspeedwell · 14/12/2024 12:50

I loved it. After a slow start it got better and better.

Keira's relationship with Ben was beautiful and the two lesbian assassins were incredibly entertaining.

Looking forward to the next season.

ribiera · 14/12/2024 12:57

Made it to the end if only to watch KKs extremely string draped cashmere sweater game

EarthyMamma · 14/12/2024 15:13

I really enjoyed Black Doves!
I usually watch dark ScandiNoir so it was a change to watch a ridiculous spy story!

I love Ben Wishaw, Andrew Buchan and Sarah Lancashire but have developed a liking for Keira and the lovely psychotic duo of Gabrielle Creevy and Ella Lily Hyland as Eleanor and Williams.

It was totally preposterous but DW and I chortled at some of the one liners.

AND Keira Knightley sounds like Harriet Walter, which makes me very, very happy.
I have had a crush on HW for 50 years.💖

Middlemarch123 · 14/12/2024 16:17

I’m enjoying it, lighthearted and good cast. It’s like Killing Eve, completely implausible but great telly.

thankyouforthedayz · 14/12/2024 17:26

Kathryn Hunter as the gangland boss steals the show (when Sam give her the Brita water filter! ) but entire cast is stellar. It is a bit Killing Eve with comedy/absurd meets spy thriller and a bit graphic novel. I loved it, best thing on TV for ages.

Oriunda · 14/12/2024 18:22

Binged the lot. Loved it. Ben Whishaw is great. Loved the cameos (Rat Scabies!). Keira Knightley was .... Keira Knightley, but the quality of Sarah Lancashire etc mitigated that.

It was very 'Lock Stock' in style, which I really enjoyed.

paranoidnamechanger · 14/12/2024 19:26

Why do people have to start another thread about TV shows when there's already one on the first page of telly addicts?

This one was on AIBU and was moved here.

woffley · 14/12/2024 21:43

I'm on ep 4 and I love it. It's delightfully funny and ott.
Love the two female assassins.

Comparisons with Slow Horses are unfair I think because they are not trying to do the same thing.

Don't bother if you can't suspend disbelief but if you take it with a pinch of salt it's entertaining.
