Gregg Wallace steps away from MasterChef after allegations by Kirsty Wark www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2024/nov/28/gregg-wallace-steps-away-from-masterchef-after-allegations-of-misconduct

Oh Greggles what have you done!

Oh dear re John and I thought he’d come out of this sorry mess unscathed. It’s just depressing all round
Best bit about the whole show was the mumsnet thread on it. Maybe time to just revamp or bin it all off!

Laska2Meryls · 15/07/2025 19:20

Let's have Giorgio Locatelli, and Grace Dent or Monica Galetti and Jimi Famuwera.
It'll probably be Tom Kerridge though ... But Nisha Katona would also be good .

I do hope they will still show Professionals with Marcus and Monica still. They could get Grace on that or Jimi as the third

Laska2Meryls · 15/07/2025 19:26

Giorgio already does Italian MasterChef

DestroyDismantleAndEngulfInFlames · 15/07/2025 19:39

Si King would be ace as a new presenter.

DestroyDismantleAndEngulfInFlames · 15/07/2025 19:39

Duplicate post

DryDay · 15/07/2025 19:48

I hope that Greggggg being outed as a total creep will encourage other pervy men to rein it in.

The next time I hear a man say something inappropriate I’m going to pull a face and say ‘Alright, Gregg Wallace..’

CurlewKate · 15/07/2025 19:57

Terode’s gone now. So yes, it is.

EsmaCannonball · 15/07/2025 20:11

Unless it was something truly horrendous, John being sacked over one comment made years ago seems heavy-handed. If true, I suspect the producers wanted the chance to completely revamp the presenting team and needed a way to push John as he wasn't jumping.

I just hope the new faces of MasterChef are people we can be rude about on the threads. Someone too inoffensive would be dull.

I like Giorgio Locatelli, Michael O'Hare, et al (in fact, there are loads of chefs from The Great British Menu I like and would like to see more of) but I suspect it will be hard for the BBC and production company to find any chef, particularly male chef, from a solid restaurant background who is completely squeaky clean and doesn't have a touch of the Anthony Bourdains about them.

artant · 15/07/2025 20:18

I like the idea of Anna Haugh as the chef presenter and Jimi Famurewa as the non-chef presenter.

I hope Masterchef does continue though as it’ll be so nice to watch it without wondering why on earth Greggg Wallace is allowed to be on my telly.

She's on one of the others.

So sorry for the amateur contestants whose show will not be aired. Awful.

So John made a remark for which he immediately apologised, the other person took no offence and that was that.

They then suggested he resign on mental health grounds and now have sacked him? Utterly disgraceful.

They suggested he resign on MH grounds? Torode said on his Instagram that the first he heard of it was when he read in the news he had been sacked!! BBC nor the production company had not been on touch. Crappy behaviour!!

Am amazed that they can sack him over one unsubstantiated comment 7 years ago. Someone else must have backed up the original allegation.

Isatis · 11/07/2025 09:14

I never really understood why they employed Wallace anyway, let alone moved him on to hosting different programmes. I've never ever come across anyone who said they liked him, or that they wanted to watch a new series because he was on it.

Look on his Instagram. He has loads of support there 😬

EmpressOfSoreen · 15/07/2025 23:07

Toxic brand now innit. One's a sex pest, the other's a racist.

Yes I find this quite confusing. We don't know what he said. Who he said it to and he denies it completely. It's either absolutely shocking (so why did they not sack him at the time?) or otherwise it looks like he is collateral damage over the BBC's embarrassment at taking so long to deal with GW. (And everyone else they failed to deal with).

AbsoluteBeginner1 · 16/07/2025 06:59

I assume there is way more to come about JT. Ive always found the pair very fake and cringeworthy.

PotterHead1985 · 16/07/2025 07:52

I've always had a feeling he was smarmy, couldn't put my finger on why tho. And mammy Potter never liked him!!!

I was sorry to hear about Mammy Potter. If she was still with us the production team could have used her to tell them which of the prospective candidates was going to turn out a wrong 'un! In fact, maybe the entire BBC is lacking in mammies; the kind of woman who can sniff out a useless boyfriend or dodgy uncle on first setting eyes upon him.

Iirc he had already been warned in the past over his conduct. MC Australia has survived the departure of the original team over bullying and behaviour outside the programme. The main issue here is whether the as yet unbroadcast series are salvageable by reediting or rerecording.

EsmaCannonball · 16/07/2025 10:11

I'm quite happy for an AI-generated Fanny Cradock and Swedish Chef to be CGI-ed into the already-recorded series.

(Actually, given how life-changing MasterChef can be for the finalists, it is obviously a real and cruel problem if the series that is in the can isn't broadcast. The nation has coped with watching John and Gregg on screen before and so I think they should just go ahead and broadcast what they have got. It still begs the question over what the BBC ever saw in Gregg and why they were so wedded to maintaining him as a big star despite his behind-the-scenes behaviour and total lack of talent or expertise. In general, the broadcast industry seems very bad at being able to tell whether or not a programme is popular because of its presenter(s) or despite them and has this tendency to cleave to expensive 'stars' whom the public aren't that fussed about or actively dislike.)

PotterHead1985 · 16/07/2025 10:21

@EsmaCannonballthank you. It's still so raw and seems unreal. Turning 40 without her sucked.
And you are right. She would spot a wrong 'un a mile off.

It seems the BBC really have become a shadow of their former selves. The whole corporation needs a kick up the bum. They seem to want to place the blame squarely in Banijays court with comments on they didn't hire the presenters, Banijay did and the like. Perhaps not, but you commissioned the programme to air on your platform. Buck stops with you ya fools.

I would feel so terrible for the amateur contestants who filmed the last series if they didn't get their shot, it's been life changing for so many previous contestants.

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2025 11:18

Might be a good idea to let the bbc let go of their unique funding and just have adverts. At least people could choose not to pay the licence fee. Before I’m jumped on, I pay the licence because I enjoy some of their programmes and radio shows too and the lack of ads, but I know many don’t do this and nothing happens to them.
They have had so many scandals for decades now , it’s getting to be one a year that something crops up.

Tis the same over here with RTE, their scandals and the licence fee - and RTE has feckin adverts!!

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2025 12:22

They must have trouble getting anyone to pay the licence fee these days. I’ve always done it, but I do feel like a mug sometimes when other people don’t.
ITV etc rarely has these scandals , are they better at policing their presenters or just keep it out of the news? I’m sure there are a few dodgy stories around some people on other channels , but mostly it’s the bbc ones who seem worse / get caught out.
I doubt I’ll ever get over Harris or Edwards. They really didn’t seem the type.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/07/2025 21:15

Richard Osman and Marina Hyde have done a special edition of their podcast just about this/answering some of these questions (The Rest Is Entertainment on YouTube)

EsmaCannonball · 18/07/2025 22:21

So the rumours for the replacements are Andi Oliver and Matt Tebbutt. I like both but they feel a bit too ubiquitous and symptomatic of the current TV trend of using the same small stable of presenters and actors for every show, meaning everything congeals into one bland, homogenous lump.

Also. I think Andi is just perfect on The Great British Menu and I wouldn't want her to leave that.

I'd like a couple of fresh people fronting MasterChef but I guess that it's such a big show the BBC will go for tried and tested.
