State of Happiness - there is a series 3! and it starts tonight on BBC 4!

I thought State of Happiness series 1 was one of the best tv shows ever. (The impact on a small fishing community of American money and influence when oil was discovered off the Norwegian coast. Many wonderful female characters. And 70s music soundtrack.)

Series 2 wasn't quite as wonderful, but I think partly because I knew the back stories. But, interesting to see how given the opportunity women were breaking out of their expected roles.

So am really excited to find there is a series 3, but wont be expecting too much of it. But so want to see how the characters lives have moved on.

For anyone interested and hasn't seen the earlier series they are available on iPlayer.

BBC Four - State of Happiness, Series 3, Safari

It’s the 1980s in Stavanger, and Norway’s oil industry is booming.

I love this too. I hope it's good as have been missing any quality telly for ages.

hepta · 23/11/2024 17:52

It's one of the best TV shows I've ever seen. Literally just stumbled across series 3 on iplayer! Hurray

BobnLen · 23/11/2024 18:15

I'm watching it now on iPlayer, it's one of my favourite series

Piggywaspushed · 23/11/2024 22:26

Unfortunately, ep 1 rather dull...

IwantToRetire · 24/11/2024 19:47

I had forgotten how much time the oil rig / diving strand took up!

Also wonder how anyone who hasn't watch series 1 & 2 would get out of it.

eg the female character running the bar, and running a bit wild. (Toril?) If you dont know about her family, and what she went through to escape their straight jacket, let alone the men who used her, you would think her not very interesting and shallow.

The bit I found slightly unrealistic was Anna, yet again coming up with some plan that outsmarts everyone else!

And am always slightly touched by Ingrid Nyman and her very fixed view of what is important in the world.

Have just seen this is the final series, so hope they dont try and end it all wrapped up with a nice bow.

Found episodes 3 & 4 much better and a reminder of how good it had been.

Very pleased to see this is back - watched the first episode of the new series, and getting back into the storyline and characters again

Toddywoddywoo · 26/11/2024 19:12

Oh thanks - I too loved S1 and S1. All episodes are on iplayer.

IwantToRetire · 26/11/2024 21:02

I've now watched 5 & 6 and its is far better that the opening episode.

But do wonder if it would be that interesting to anyone who hasn't watched series 1 & 2. ie knowing the background stories to the characters.

Have now finished and have quibbles which I wont post yet as would spoilers, but felt they go very close to capturing the feeling and story line of the original series.

My viewing schedule is now saddly empty.

I've got 2 episodes to go so will join you on the thread shortly

Piggywaspushed · 08/12/2024 08:54

I watched episode 5 last night and I'm still bored, sadly.

I guess Jonathan and Anna's plot was the most gripping thing and now that's gone I can't be interested in all the diving chat and Randi's fisherman.

BellaPommefritio · 08/12/2024 09:07

Loved it too, the 3 series have shown some great character development esp re Toril's mother. Will be starting Black Tulip on Channel 4 Walter Presents as a replacement, and looking forward to Frozen Embrace which starts 20th Dec also on there.

I'm on Ep2, finding it hard going as I don't remember the characters, was so long ago. For some reason iPlayer won't allow me to watch previous series.

Strange about iPlayer. It says the earlier episodes are available.

Aha, there’s a thread. Which I’ve had to skim as I’m only on Ep 8 of S1 - but I wanted to thank those of you who I think mentioned this on other threads. Started watching while I was ill and it’s been the best company so far. So apparently gentle but absorbing, so rewarding of attention - I absolutely love it and find myself thinking about (actually missing) the characters while I’m doing other things.

Brilliant TV; I’m looking forward to seeing how it develops.

Glad you started at series 1 because without that the other series dont have the depth that getting to know the characters gives.

I remember feeling when series 1 finished and it wasn't clear if there would be any more, quite sad not to know how life worked out for them.

Thanks for this. I loved series 1 and 2 and thought the penultimate episode quite traumatic as I knew someone in the industry. Will definitely be watching series 3.

Do the words Piper Alpha ring any bells?

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/12/2024 16:42

Not Piper Alpha it was Alexander Kielland.

Each episode has a red line around it and "watched" underneath. Clicking on them does nothing.
Thanks for tipping us it was on.

Each episode has a red line around it and "watched" underneath. Clicking on them does nothing.

That implies that someone using the same internet connection as you has watched it!

But even so, you should be able to re-watch. I often "re-watch" the last episode I've watched, so as to whizz through to the end to remind me of where the story line left off.

Are you watching via a tv or a mobile, laptop, computer. Just a thought, but dont know, but if via a computer browser have your tried clearing the memory cache?
