After The Party is a tense drama full of accusations and high emotions.

Set in Wellington, New Zealand, the series follows a woman who lost everything when she accused her husband of a sex crime against her daughter’s teenage friend, and no one believed her.

It features Black Bird (www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/black-bird-release-date-cast-plot-and-everything-we-know) star Robyn Malcolm as Penny Wilding, an outspoken science teacher, basketball coach and environmental campaigner. Lord of the Rings star Peter Mullan plays Penny’s accused ex-husband who returns to town leaving Penny to decide what’s more important, the truth or rebuilding her relationship with those around her.

Here’s everything you need to know about
After The Party
…

Penny Wilding tells it like it is, whether that’s lecturing teenage boys on how porn will ruin their sex lives or waging a graffiti war on fishing boats.

But her attitude means she has few friends in the coastal town near Wellington, New Zealand.

Five years ago, however, Penny’s life was turned upside down when she accused her husband Phil of a sex crime and nobody believed her.

When Phil returns, Penny’s daughter pleads with her to forget the accusations and move on. But can she really let such injustice go unpunished?

Robyn Malcolm plays brutally honest teacher, mother and grandmother Penny Wilding.

Robyn says: "Penny did something based on what she believed, and it caused great damage and ruined a number of lives including her daughter’s.

Now, she feels she has to double down and be right, but righteous people can be dangerous and Penny is deeply fallible.

"It’s a simple story – did he do it, or didn't he do it, and is she right or is she wrong?

But the show exists in a morally grey area, we didn’t want to give simple answers. The rug gets pulled out from under you..."

I thought this was a really good series

I wonder if will be a s2

When they find his body and now they Ollie knows the truth and how Tom will cope being a killer

Surely they will see marks around his neck ?

Wow well I wasn't expecting that ending

bobslay28 · 06/12/2024 08:09

So now we've caught up....

What did the picture actually show? It wasn't clear and was it enough for Ollie to understand what had happened?

Was anyone else a bit underwhelmed with the ending? Really wanted to see the aftermath of Phil's disappearance and especially how Grace would react.

Would people not be suspicious about his sudden disappearance given that Penny has been blasting him to literally anyone for years? She'd be prime suspect surely?

And how could Tom let Grace take Walt away with Phil knowing what he did to him? Also must have been very hard for him keep quiet through all of Penny's accusations knowing that she was right, just about the wrong thing.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/12/2024 08:21

Ollie saw a pic of his self in a tent with his eyes shielding from the light

Or

Hand up to protect his self from Phil taking a picture

Tom should have said something

He knew penny was correct about Phil

Guess it's the usual male rape that they feel ashamed and can't admit it or let anyone know about it

Tom and Ollie were graces friends

Phil was a monster

I couldn't tell what the picture showed to be honest. I'm pretty sure The picture was Tom though, not Ollie. Someone in the other thread said it was a half naked Tom pushing the camera away.

I think Penny probably would be suspected yes.
But I was ok with the ending. I mean to me, it was an effective ending.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/12/2024 08:48

Oh was it Tom in the pic

Yes that would make sense as was in toms stuff and books

So Ollie was lucky it wasn't him but he now knows phil did abuse people

I hope there is a s2

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/12/2024 08:50

@bobslay28 no as penny told Tom to say he got out and assumed Phil would follow him

So they will find his body washed up drowned

Tho also surely they would see his throat marks in pm

The picture was an adolescent boy sitting up in a bed (or on a sleeping bag) naked but with a cover over his lap, holding his arm up in the air towards the camera presumably to try and prevent the picture being taken. And presumably Tom.

BalladOfBarry · 06/12/2024 08:56

I thought it was Tom in the picture. The poor boy had grown up with a type of Stockholm syndrome, wanting Phil to love him.

I think deep down, Ollie knows something traumatic that he has repressed and the recent activities, then the photo was definitely stirring it up for him.

It's good to have a TV series that was well written and acted. There's been too many that I started and couldn't finish.

If any of you have Apple TV, I'm enjoying Bad Sisters at the moment.

purpleme12 · 06/12/2024 09:05

@bobslay28

Ollie's behaviour was really freaky though

purpleme12 · 06/12/2024 09:05

Sorry I didn't mean to tag anyone in that post

Ichibangerbera · 06/12/2024 09:06

I’m not sure if there will be marks around Phil’s neck. Tom drowned him so he pushed his head under water. By the time the body is washed up any marks may have disintegrated. What about his surf board though? Did Penny leave the board in the sea and swim back?

purpleme12 · 06/12/2024 09:07

I don't know but they'll probably look at Penny purely because she wasn't at the party conveniently and obviously had motive. Whether anything would come of it I don't know but I definitely they'd look at her

deeahgwitch · 06/12/2024 10:10

Because so many on this thread thought it was great I watched it in the end.
How could Tom stick around ?
Who was the father of Grace's baby ?
Hated the fact Penny had sex with her friend who was also her friend's husband. A decent person doesn't do that. She is certainly flawed.

purpleme12 · 06/12/2024 10:36

I don't think the father was any of the characters in the programme. I don't think he was on the scene for whatever reason and I don't think that we relevant to the story

butterpuffed · 06/12/2024 11:17

Penny wasn't a nice woman at all , she thought she was right about everything [not just Phil] , she had a temper , she antagonised many , she had sex with her best friend's husband bbbut I couldn't see her as a killer .

She and Tom would probably be found out due to markings and bruises on his neck.

One thing I didn't understand was why several scenes were shown of her at the life classes , what was the point and also ,how did she just happen to find the books which told her what she wanted to know about Phil .

purpleme12 · 06/12/2024 11:25

Well I guess there's got to be a plot device to make us find out the truth in the programme 😂

butterpuffed · 06/12/2024 11:29

You're right , a case of plotting something to end the drama !

Northernladdette · 06/12/2024 11:47

We were watching it as it went out on terrestrial.
Missed it Wednesday, so watched it on catch up, only to find they’d put the last two episodes out at 10pm whereas the first four went out at 9pm🤔🤔

Northernladdette · 06/12/2024 11:55

Yeah, it could be called ‘After the Second Party’ 🙂

bobslay28 · 06/12/2024 12:13

I wondered about the art classes too. What was the relevance? There were a few seemingly irrelevant sub plots - the neighbour Graham for example. Not sure what the point of him was?

Can't make my mind up about penny. On one hand i think she was fearless and ballsy as fuck. The scene where they were sat with Ollie's parents after the party and Phil is trying to smooth everything over and penny just comes out with 'I caught my husband abusing your son' was amazing.

However I wish she hadn't slept with her friends husband. She'd pretty much alienated all of her friends and most of her family by the end.
