After The Party is a tense drama full of accusations and high emotions.

Set in Wellington, New Zealand, the series follows a woman who lost everything when she accused her husband of a sex crime against her daughter’s teenage friend, and no one believed her.

It features Black Bird (www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/black-bird-release-date-cast-plot-and-everything-we-know) star Robyn Malcolm as Penny Wilding, an outspoken science teacher, basketball coach and environmental campaigner. Lord of the Rings star Peter Mullan plays Penny’s accused ex-husband who returns to town leaving Penny to decide what’s more important, the truth or rebuilding her relationship with those around her.

Here’s everything you need to know about
After The Party
…

Penny Wilding tells it like it is, whether that’s lecturing teenage boys on how porn will ruin their sex lives or waging a graffiti war on fishing boats.

But her attitude means she has few friends in the coastal town near Wellington, New Zealand.

Five years ago, however, Penny’s life was turned upside down when she accused her husband Phil of a sex crime and nobody believed her.

When Phil returns, Penny’s daughter pleads with her to forget the accusations and move on. But can she really let such injustice go unpunished?

Robyn Malcolm plays brutally honest teacher, mother and grandmother Penny Wilding.

Robyn says: "Penny did something based on what she believed, and it caused great damage and ruined a number of lives including her daughter’s.

Now, she feels she has to double down and be right, but righteous people can be dangerous and Penny is deeply fallible.

"It’s a simple story – did he do it, or didn't he do it, and is she right or is she wrong?

But the show exists in a morally grey area, we didn’t want to give simple answers. The rug gets pulled out from under you..."

Whoop hit post

Did it happen

Was it innocent face stroking tho boy was naked

Be the story of yes looked suss but

  1. actually phil was innocent and looking after drunk boy - tho stroking face when naked isn't good

  2. Or that she thinks he was a paed

  3. we actually see him do something

  4. the boy in the morning says nothing happens but maybe later he kinda Remembers something

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/11/2024 22:25

She really thinks he did it

Is he gas lighting her ?

Oh I don't know

But Grace must feel in the middle

OP posts:
bobslay28 · 21/11/2024 22:52

Grace seems like an entitled dickhead

MorrisZapp · 21/11/2024 22:57

The acting in this is simply a masterclass. The porn lecture was utterly on point.

God knows where the story is going. She's looking more and more erratic. Light relief when the neighbour tried to wangle a dinner date, DP said he was like the 'ooh Jackie' guy from Friday Night Dinner.

We're all in.

bobslay28 · 21/11/2024 23:17

Agree they are trying to make her look unreliable and erratic whereas Phil is super cool and arrogant. Really don't know which way this is going to go. Penny definitely has some balls and sticks to her beliefs 100%.

Can't get my head around how grace can have her dad around her son when there's even the smallest doubt about him. Probably because he's bankrolling her.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/11/2024 23:34

Must be hard tho. My mum is dead but if she was alive and said that my dad tried it on with one of my daughters friends I would find that really hard to understand /believe

Seems strange that no one else beleives her and not on His dbs so was never proved

bobslay28 · 21/11/2024 23:42

It must be very tough for grace being in the middle but if my mum was so adamant about something I don't think I could totally discount it. I may not believe it fully but the accusation would be in the back of my mind and I feel like it would make me more cautious with my own dc. It's all very complex.

butterpuffed · 22/11/2024 17:08

She may be right , she may be wrong about Phil , but she seems to go out of her way to make people dislike her and either she doesn't realise that or she doesn't care .

I feel sorry for her daughter .

NeelyOHara1 · 22/11/2024 19:49

2 eps in and intrigued to watch the rest. It's hard to assume other than that she's right, as her not being so would actually be a somewhat "out there" dramatic move. I think there has to be more flashbacks to come wrt any police investigations into her claims at the time eg. interviewing other lads that were involved in activities he organised?

Bankholidayhelp · 22/11/2024 23:57

Penny is such a loose cannon

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/11/2024 21:20

She is but if she believes her dh is a perve /abused then she is right to follow

Thing is. Did he or didn't he

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 23/11/2024 21:35

I think she's just a loose cannon all round though

Conniethecatapillar · 23/11/2024 23:26

No spoilers but I don't find her a likeable character at all, I am wondering if she is meant to be like that or not.

purpleme12 · 23/11/2024 23:27

She's very in your face isn't she

bobslay28 · 23/11/2024 23:37

Just finished episode 3. Without giving any spoilers away, I feel like I saw that coming. But my god she doesn't make life easy for herself does she.

I'm sure there is something in the fact that she is so chaotic while Phil remains totally smooth and un-flustered by it all.

Still don't like grace. She clearly has a lot of resentment for her mum but is happy to let her babysit and help her out. It's hard viewing and as much as Penny isn't helping her case at all I can't help but feel a bit sorry for her. She goes about things completely the wrong way of course.

deeahgwitch · 24/11/2024 09:53

I gave up after Episode 1.

heldinadream · 24/11/2024 10:09

@deeahgwitch What didn't you like about it?
I'm loving it, best thing I've seen in ages.

deeahgwitch · 24/11/2024 10:15

I don't know.
I like things like Shetland, The Gone.
I wanted to like it - so many rated it on here but it just wasn't for me.
Lots of slow lingering shots of her, then the pace gets upped. All the tooing and froing.
Possibly because it was all a bit disjointed.
