What happened in the Moonflower Murders prequel Magpie Murders?

Magpie Murders followed Susan Ryeland, a book editor who was given a manuscript of author Alan Conway’s unfinished novel. In the book Conway’s detective Atticus Pünd, who is terminally ill, investigates two deaths in the small town of Saxby-on-Avon. But the manuscript ends just as Atticus is about to reveal the murderer’s identity, leaving Susan determined to find the missing last chapter.

She then hears that Conway supposedly committed suicide but believes this isn’t true and finds herself investigating his murder.

So back to s2

The second season of hit detective show Magpie Murders, called Moonflower Murders (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/magpie-murders-season-2-release/), has already aired in the US, leaving UK viewers waiting until they can catch up with Susan Ryeland and the fictional Atticus Pünd.

The season will officially kicks off with a double-bill, with the first two episodes airing back to back on BBC One at 9:15pm and 10:20pm on Saturday 16th November.

The new season, which is based on the second novel in Anthony Horowitz’s Susan Ryeland series, will pick up where Magpie Murders left off, with Susan having left publishing and living in Crete with her long-time boyfriend, Andrea

The synopsis for the season says: "Her idyll is disturbed by the shadow of a murder committed at a British country hotel eight years ago. Alan Conway visited the hotel and wrote a novel based on what happened there.

Cecily Treherne, the young woman who helps run the hotel, read the book and believed the wrong man had been arrested. Now she has disappeared.

"Can Susan uncover the secret hidden in the book and find Cecily before it is too late?"

Lesley Manville and Tim McMullan will, of course, both be returning, along with Alexandros Logothetis, Daniel Mays, Claire Rushbrook, Conleth Hill, Matthew Beard and Sanjeev Kohli

Not trusting the Doctor, which probably means he is fine because I never spot the murderer.

though I didn’t like the way he opened his wife’s letter , why did he do that, very suspicious behaviour.

duc748 · 17/11/2024 00:24

"The more mechanical the age, the more it becomes less humane", says Atticus. A wise man indeed; aren't we just seeing it now?

InMySpareTime · 17/11/2024 06:52

I don't get why they mentioned about the barn owl wing of the hotel and it being an anagram of branlow, apropos of the moonflower wing which is not an anagram of anything.
I was distracted for half the episode trying to think of the anagram.

johnworf · 17/11/2024 09:07

Watched episodes 1 and 2 last night. Loved them both. Haven't read the books so hoping it keeps to the original story.

Lesley Manville is wonderful.

Clawdy · 17/11/2024 09:12

Really enjoying it but wish they wouldn't do two episodes a night. Recorded second one to watch tonight or tomorrow. Think lots of people will do that.

OrsolaRosso · 17/11/2024 15:33

I'm watching it now, on second episode. Getting distracted by Lesley's outfits, especially the dress she wore to lunch.

the80sweregreat · 17/11/2024 17:45

I didn't see the Magpie murders so a bit out of the loop regarding the main lady and her background. Or why she is now in Crete.
Only watched episode one on Saturday and it seems more suited for an afternoon slot after 'Doctors !'
I like Daniel Mays , even if his accent was a bit dodgy.
It is beautifully filmed and some good acting , but just a bit too twee and reminded me of ' Ludwig ' a bit as well.

duc748 · 17/11/2024 17:50

Last season ended with Susan's BF trying to persuade her to move to Crete and run an hotel with him and his cousin. Susan wasn't keen, but obviously went in the end.

butterpuffed · 17/11/2024 18:21

Seen episodes 1 and 2 today . Am liking it so far , a bit complicated with real characters and fictional ones together in a fictional drama !!

I'm wondering why Cecily's father told Susan that Lisa's scar was caused by Cecily throwing a glass at Lisa as a child . Perhaps it's a hint that Cecily isn't squeaky clean .

martinisforeveryone · 17/11/2024 18:21

@OrsolaRosso you can check up on what's been worn on screen here
Moonflower Murders: Clothes, Outfits, Brands, Style and Looks | Spotern

I'm enjoying it, it's not too taxing or grizzly but has enough intrigue and I like Lesley.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/11/2024 20:01

Ok seen e2

Agree wouid have been nice to have sat /sun rather then 2 on a sat

Anyway my views

I thought at first that Lisa is the murderer. That's why her sister had gone missing - in shock
She is def jealous of everything they have

So lisa killed the man frank - Not sure why yet. But she def dodgy imo

Must admit I didn't see the scar. Had to rewind. Not that huge or obvious

So we have to work out who killed Melissa and that's the person who killed frank

Is that right

Two stories confuse me

But then if that's the case onv lisa aka Melissa didn't herself as strangled

So I've confused myself ha ha

Dog seems important still

So going for Derek /Eric killed frank /Melissa

Oh yes I love the dresses too @OrsolaRosso

@duc748 @the80sweregreat Not just her Greek partner trying to persuade her to join his dream, there was the push factor that the CEO job literally burned around as Andreas referenced.

I've just watched episode 1, DH wants to watch Showtrial now and I’m watching it with him as I love Adeel Akhter so he has to wait for me. I didn’t watch the first series of Showtrial with my full attention as I really don’t enjoy femicide and violence against women as entertainment. Hopefully I can join you TV pace next week.

I really liked episode 1, I was wondering how on earth they’d set it up with the author dead, but the groundwork of Alan Conway being a shit-stirrer was very well set in the first series!

I'm intrigued about the hotel! I think Algernon the estate agent and the sister met and plotted something about money with the hotel.

Really enjoying joining @Blondeshavemorefun and @duc748 for this murder mystery cosy crime stage of my life!

It was nice to see the magpies make an appearance :)

OrsolaRosso · 17/11/2024 23:12

I couldn't resist, and have watched it all.

The only spoiler I will give, which is not actually a spoiler at all, is that Lesley Manville's dresses and outfits continue to be fabulous throughout!

Enjoy the rest of the series, everyone 😀 😊 😄

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/11/2024 23:21

Oh @OrsolaRosso you succumbed 😂

I'm Enjoying this tho confusing with the two stories

Must be weird for the cast to play 2 diff characters and R.E.M. double lines

Especially since some of the character names in the different eras are linked Chubb, and Locke, Parris and Berlin! Probably more, but I need to look on IMDb to check them out.

Agree, the clothes are fabulous, not to mention the cars!

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/11/2024 09:18

I didn't click the Chubb and lock

I did Berlin and Paris

deeahgwitch · 19/11/2024 13:59

I didn't watch the first season but on @Blondeshavemorefun recommendation I'm watching Season 2.
I did find it a but confusing jumping back and forward re timelines and a person murder in1era and a missing/probably murdered person in another era.

Iamiams · 19/11/2024 14:12

It was confusing enough having watched series 1 first. I would really recommend watching series 1. Both series all the family watched together and paused the episodes regularly to try and make sense of it! It’s very clever writing but it requires a lot more intellectual thought than Death in Paradise or Ludwig.

duc748 · 19/11/2024 14:48

I wouldn't bracket this with Death In Paradise, but I would with Ludwig. Both shows, for me, are very cleverly written, and are certainly a grade above the DiP, Midsomer, Madam Blancs etc, of this world.

martinisforeveryone · 19/11/2024 14:52

I love all the links and parallels in the two time frames. I suppose they filmed them as stand alone storylines and then it was cut together in the edit. Otherwise continuity, wardrobe, makeup and the actors knowing where they were, would've been a nightmare undertaking.
