What happened in the Moonflower Murders prequel Magpie Murders?

Magpie Murders followed Susan Ryeland, a book editor who was given a manuscript of author Alan Conway’s unfinished novel. In the book Conway’s detective Atticus Pünd, who is terminally ill, investigates two deaths in the small town of Saxby-on-Avon. But the manuscript ends just as Atticus is about to reveal the murderer’s identity, leaving Susan determined to find the missing last chapter.

She then hears that Conway supposedly committed suicide but believes this isn’t true and finds herself investigating his murder.

So back to s2

The second season of hit detective show Magpie Murders, called Moonflower Murders (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/magpie-murders-season-2-release/), has already aired in the US, leaving UK viewers waiting until they can catch up with Susan Ryeland and the fictional Atticus Pünd.

The season will officially kicks off with a double-bill, with the first two episodes airing back to back on BBC One at 9:15pm and 10:20pm on Saturday 16th November.

The new season, which is based on the second novel in Anthony Horowitz’s Susan Ryeland series, will pick up where Magpie Murders left off, with Susan having left publishing and living in Crete with her long-time boyfriend, Andrea

The synopsis for the season says: "Her idyll is disturbed by the shadow of a murder committed at a British country hotel eight years ago. Alan Conway visited the hotel and wrote a novel based on what happened there.

Cecily Treherne, the young woman who helps run the hotel, read the book and believed the wrong man had been arrested. Now she has disappeared.

"Can Susan uncover the secret hidden in the book and find Cecily before it is too late?"

Lesley Manville and Tim McMullan will, of course, both be returning, along with Alexandros Logothetis, Daniel Mays, Claire Rushbrook, Conleth Hill, Matthew Beard and Sanjeev Kohli

Looking forward to the third episode tonight. Just watching the first episode again, hoping to fit in the second as well. Maybe the murderer is a woman because such a point is made of the women in the family having a big voice during the wedding speech?

It’s a TV pace thread, I don’t understand why people binge and then feel the need to announce it here and share their feelings and thoughts on the ending - even if there’s no specific plot spoilers, it takes away the experience of watching it tv pace and wondering about twists and turns. It’s easy to make a separate thread. @Blondeshavemorefun makes such an effort with these threads as well, I’ve enjoyed historical ones when I’ve watched a tv series years after the airing! I watched Poldark and really enjoyed reading the weekly newspaper commentary and MN threads with it.

Astrabees · 23/11/2024 16:19

I‘be binged it but I am not saying anything about the plot. I really loved Lesley Manville wardrobe and as she is the same age as me I might be doing a bit of copying. I always wanted an MG in my youth, now avidly perusing AutoTrader.

@BakeOffRewatch - sheer incompetence sometimes.Blush

The other thread is here - do not click if you don't want spoilers!

That’s very gracious of you @ErrolTheDragon 😂. I know everyone has different views of internet etiquette, but I see it as entering a room of people talking about something and enjoying the watching experience, and then just taking the conversation totally different way when people post their opinions on a tv pace thread after having binged, even if not spoiler per se.

I like seeing what other people say about the details of the episodes, other posters often notice things I don’t, or interpret lines differently. It’s particularly good in this series with double characters.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/11/2024 19:48

@BakeOffRewatch in the same as you

I enjoy weekly as 1) think notice more when don't binge 2) can chat about if and other peoples views who may spot something I don't

I’m watching live! I thought Pünd’s assistant was putting on the fainting to stay behind and find out more info in the last episode. It is really confusing all the characters and double roles. Who were those people eating pizza and watching tv?

suburburban · 23/11/2024 21:49

I am confused about location tonight.

Thought hotel was in Devon but she seemed to be in Suffolk. I know the modern inspector was from Suffolk originally

BakeOffRewatch · 23/11/2024 22:19

I think it’s on Devon for the fictional actress Melissa James, Suffolk for the real life Treherne owners. In the “Atticus Pünd Takes the Case” world they explain Chubb being there as a transfer.

An additional mystery of what’s going on with Susan Ryeland’s sister Katie. Divorce? Lost all their family money? I’m thinking the latter, as the first doesn’t seem reason enough for her son to drop out of uni.

BakeOffRewatch · 23/11/2024 22:22

And why did Andreas have to go?

Too many mysteries. I agree with Susan. Questions leading onto more questions, rather than plot development, is quite frustrating! I am enjoying watching it though. I love that this will take us up to 14th December.

Howisittheendofsummer24 · 23/11/2024 23:46

I only commented on clothing of the lead - no idea how that was classed as a spoiler 🤔

I don't know if it's been mentioned on here but I didn't realise that Atticus Pund was an anagram. Read it on WiKi.

Piggywaspushed · 24/11/2024 12:11

The general idea across the books is that Alan Conway scatters anagrams throughout his books which sometimes point to the revelations. I get distracted reading the books trying to spot them!

Yes they made a big deal of of “Barnowl”, the name of one of the two hotel wings, being an Anagram of Branlow, the name of the hotel, that I’ve been toying around in my head with anagrams of “Moonflower” the other hotel wing. The only word I can see in it is “women”, then with the remainder maybe floor or roof+l? Who knows.

Some of the anagrams in series 1 I found landed a bit flat, like the book title names spelling out “An Anagram”, though I guess that was adjacent to the scenes of why Alan Conway was so insistent about the books being called “Magpie Murders” and not “The Magpie Murders”. @Bunionbabe worth watching the first series as it sets the scene and character traits, like Alan Conway being an intelligent but completely dissatisfied human who took it out by toying with those around him. A big deal was made of the anagram of Atticus Pünd making the business unsellable but I really doubt that would have killed the value of the book series - probably made it even more popular!

Pumpkincozynights · 25/11/2024 11:42

Has anyone mention where Lesley’s dresses are from? Absolutely gorgeous. I’ve watched all episodes and loved them all.
