But Taggie was worse in the books, a complete wet lettuce

AndAllOurYesterdays · 27/10/2024 07:03

I thought the same about Taggie. A complete wet fish.

I felt a bit sorry for Valerie- Freddy chased Lizzie again and again and she's left at Green Lawns with her huge gladioli.

Valerie won’t mind, she clearly found Fred-Fred comtemptible.

Taggie much worse in the books, a complete drip.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 27/10/2024 07:36

Overall completely loved this and didn't mind plot changes. The ending was a surprise but on reflection also gave the main female characters some agency - Maude and Cameron both effectively left; Monica made her position clear, Taggie and Lizzie got what they wanted.

Have to say I love Monica in this. Wonderful actress who plays it so perfectly and you really see the dynamic between her and Tony that explains why whatever he says he's so unlikely to ever actually leave her.

I wonder if the Archie/Caitlin relationship might start to develop in Season 2

Rivals is my favourite book and has been since I was about 12.

I don't think TB is dead. He can't be the plot would have to change too much (but DT keeping his options open makes sense).

I loved the adaptation, loved Lizzie and Freddy. Less keen on RCB casting.

A Polo adaptation would be great.

Maybe I'll open the copy of tackle one of my friends offloaded on me a couple of weeks ago.

Don't bother with Tackle unless you're a die hard JC fan and definitely not if you know anything about football. I love the Rutshire Chronicles but I had to force myself to finish it.

Zampa · 28/10/2024 21:24

Polo could be tricky to film, especially with the international locations.

I think it's more likely they would move onto The Man Who Made Husband Jealous.

Nespressso · 28/10/2024 21:57

Can someone please tell me what happens in the second half of the book rivals? I’m struggling to find a plot summary. So maud cheats with Tony?! How?! How do they even get there? And how to Rupert and taggie get together eventually?

readingmakesmehappy · 29/10/2024 14:36

That moment in the kitchen when Rupert says "I can't breathe without on you". swoons

I was exceptionally happy about the kitchen scene, despite it being a massive departure from the book

Well, there's a question @Nespressso!

The second half of the book or stuff that hasn't been covered:

Taggie meets Rupert's children and he is enchanted because she is has such a heavenly time with them and him, even stroppy Tab likes her. They all play in the woods in the autumn leaves and Taggie picks Rupert some autumn leaves saying that he should keep them, as each one represents a happy day. He puts them in his drawer under some photos of the children, Cameron finds them and isn't happy as she realises he's mad about Taggie

Maud bumps into Monica Baddingham who says "just because our husbands are at war, doesn't mean we have to be" and after a boozy lunch at the Bar Sinister (Bas joins them and flirts with Maud) Monica persuades Maud to audition for the lead part in an Am Dram production of the Merry Widow. She drags her to the auditions which are about to finish and the director (ex London darling!) is enchanted and gives her the part.

Declan goes to Ireland to film a program about his beloved Yeats (which Rupert pronounces as Y-EATS, whereupon Cameron screams at him "for Chrissake, dumbass, it's pronounced YATES" and then thinks "God, I shouldn't have said that" ) with Cameron and she and Declan nearly sleep together but don't. However, Declan hears that an obscure and lauded Stroud playwright who never gives interviews lives nearby and persuades him to meet him so Venturer can put on his plays.

Maud is terrified at the first night of the Merry Widow and needs Declan there to calm her but he is still in Ireland chasing after the playwright and misses the plane and everything except the end of the after party. She is a triumph and there's a London agent in the audience. Rupert coaxes her onto the stage after she refuses to go on and at the end of the party when he arrives she decides to forgive Declan.

Venturer find out that the Irish playwright has been stolen from them by Corinium and think maybe Cameron is a mole. But it turns out that Maud, 'neglected' by Declan has been shagging Tony and telling him everything.

Then Beattie Johnson publishes Rupert's memoirs, which are sordid and filthy. Rupert offers to resign from Venturer as it won't look good for the franchise application. Declan won't hear of it.

Eventually they are all invited to the IBA in Brompton Rd to hear whether their franchise bids are successful. Declan doesn't even open the envelope as he assumes the memoirs and Tony's dirty tricks and lies about how he'll improve Corinium have worked. Tony has booked a hotel suite overflowing with Champagne in anticipation of a victory. Venturer win.

Rupert declares his love for Taggie, which has been simmering, and Declan, who by now is a big fan and friend of Rupert, asks the Bishop of Cotchester to marry them in Cotchester cathedral (without telling him at first who the groom is).

The end! <takes a bow>

What did I miss?

Excellent work @TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack
I'd just add Maud returns to Declan when she believes he'd lost the franchise so they are reunited.

Nespressso · 30/10/2024 12:53

@TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack brilliant thank you.

Nespressso · 30/10/2024 13:00

I think I’m going to read the books (never read any of them before!)

shall I start with riders or straight to rivals?

istara · 30/10/2024 13:28

Just regarding this - at the end of the book Patrick tells Cameron that he knows she did sleep with Declan, and that was why Declan was late back - out of guilt - and missed Maud's performance.

I've always thought it was a bit odd and out of the blue, as there's nothing about Declan expressing guilt to Patrick or confessing or anything else.

Probably start with Riders so you get the full background, but if you're not too horsey (and I'm not) you might want to skim some of the horse stuff. I think Rivals is by far the best of the entire series, probably followed by The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous.

Oh, really? Does she confirm it though or is just Patrick assuming? I always thought they didn't quite do it from the book.

Just sharing a thing I found today with fellow cooper lovers
All the audiobooks are available on BookBeat if you use that
Starting again from the beginning !

ABirdsEyeView · 02/11/2024 23:01

I can't believe they've made half a book and not securely committed to finishing it off!

I have absolutely loved this - Katherine Parkinson and Danny Dyer ❤️

Found Maud much more sympathetic a character than in the book.

The casting was brilliant - had my doubts about RCB but Alex Hassell has won me over.

My one criticism is that Freddy Jones wife is too likeable and I find myself feeling sorry for her.

diddl · 03/11/2024 17:43

So what does the Tony cliff hanger mean for Cameron whatever the outcome?

I wasn't watching that intently tbh.

Did he say that she would lose her right to be in UK?

And she said she would marry RCB?

Why would she say think it was a possibility?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/11/2024 21:24

Rupert told her he would look after her. But yes, marriage is a stretch.

Cameron did hit Tony over the head and stunned him (it might even have been with an award statuette, I can’t remember) for long enough to escape. But she very much took the brunt of the fight and turns up at Rupert’s with blood pouring out of one eye and massive bruises. He’s horrified and looks after her very sweetly. I’m pretty sure Tony isn’t supposed to be dead. It wouldn’t suit the plot and also you could see him breathing.

I can’t see how they could incorporate Polo into season 2 - it starts with such an emotionally charged scene (Will) that it would totally distract from the franchise battle. Plus all new characters, as pp have said. Perdita’s age isn’t a problem, though - she says straight up that she’s 14, and then Ricky goes to jail for two years, and then she’s playing for the Pony Club aged 16 and doesn’t start playing in Apocalypse immediately. Is she about 17/18 when they go to Argentina and she meets Luke? He’s not that much older than she is.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/11/2024 21:28

If Cameron is employed by Venturer can’t they take over her visa sponsorship?
