Are there any other Jilly Cooper fans out there? I feel ridiculously excited about Rivals coming out.

I'm torn on this. I used to love JC but re-read one a couple of years ago and just found it horribly rapey. Particularly the part where poor Helen is forced into a foursome and basically raped by Billy who is supposed to be such a nice guy. I gave them all away.

tennissquare · 17/10/2024 10:34

@crackofdoom , maybe on Amazon prime to buy eventually. Disney plus is £4.99 per month and you can cancel very easily, you can also pay with Tesco vouchers.

That's Riders and it's the scene I was thinking of in one of my other posts when I said that some of the scenes are pretty shocking (or whatever I said).

Is this one the one about bidding for ITV franchises? Will a modern audience understand that?

Maybe I'll pay for a month when the whole series is available 🤔. (Although my inner Jilly Cooperesque diva won't tolerate delayed gratification. Perhaps I'd better start channelling Taggie instead).

Apparently they have slightly changed the storyline to celebs saying regrettable things on TV and the fallout that can cause.

tennissquare · 17/10/2024 12:38

@crackofdoom , all 8 1 hr long episodes are available on Friday

@FanDann this is how I imagined RCB too!! I hated the casting in the Riders thing they did and the MWMHJ was just appalling and needs consigning to some dark and never seen again bin!

However I am now cheered as my darling eldest son has Disney+ and has told me how to use it so I too can join with you all tomorrow, Fracas/Bluebell scented, wrapped in a towel and watch it!

Not sure if your son included this bit, but be prepared to be asked for a sign in code for Disney if you're watching in a different household - my DD is at uni (so still part of my household) but she needs a code to access on a different WiFi (I think that's why?🤔) than our home one, which gets emailed to me when she tries to sign in. Doesn't happen when she's at home though.

I'm hoping this is going to be better than the previous two adaptations, but I also think they're probably 'of their time' as much as the books.

Well hello everyone! I will be sitting in my oversized jumper with my huge grey eyes and my cloud of hair, cuddling a shivering dog because the heating is broken and I'm incapable of calling a plumber. Luckily there was a cold chicken in the larder and a plate of smoked salmon so I'll eat that while drinking whisky out of a chipped mug as the washing up machine is broken so there are no clean glasses.

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 17/10/2024 13:20

I completely agree about miscasting or RCB, he's definitely blonde and blue eyed, the actor who played Arthur in Merlin is a GOOD SHOUT @Zampa

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 17/10/2024 13:20

TheOnlyAletheia · 16/10/2024 21:16

A young Rupert Everett would have made a cracking Bas Baddingham

Oh HARD agree to that!

BestIsWest · 16/10/2024 22:18

Janey did in in Riders…Kevin Coley Pet Food Magnate was involved.

Urgh, I remember, I've just re-read this, Kevin is utterly unattractive, god knows what Janey sees in him (money and 'take me away from all this squalor I created' is the answer I know!)

I’ve always maintained that JC is one of our greatest writers on the English Countryside. Or Cuntricide. Gardens too.
Some of her descriptive writing is superlative.

Her diaries from the late 70s and 80s, The Common Years is probably my favourite of hers. I do hope she’s written more diaries to be published one day.

Oh I agree, her descriptions of the Gloucestershire countryside (and the Argentinian showgrounds and pretty much everywhere) are stunning.

It does make me laugh though that all the hard riding, Polo playing men regularly quote Shakespeare and Auden and other, much more obscure writers. Luke murmuring "And I have miles to go before I sleep" etc!

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 17/10/2024 13:32

And the books are definitely of their time, of course they are. The Nairobi scene in Riders is so awful I just skipped past it - I am re-reading, having already re-read Rivals a few weeks ago.

I'm so excited for this but terrified they'll have fucked it up! I'm almost scared to watch. And will want to watch all 8 back to back but at the same time will want to save them up a bit. <sign>

bookworm14 · 17/10/2024 13:36

Placemarking! I'm a massive Jilly fan and am very much looking forward to this. Not convinced by the Rupert casting (should have been James Norton in my view) but they seem to have got the humour and lightheartedness spot on based on the trailers. Lizzie is my favourite and Katherine Parkinson is a brilliant choice. I hope she trims her fringe with the bacon scissors!

Stowickthevast · 17/10/2024 13:48

Coming on here to see if someone has started a thread but of course you have.

I'll be watching while cuddling a black lab in my dilapidated cottage, and drinking bolly with added fur out of my chipped tooth mug.

I grew up passing these around in the 80s but Rivals was always my favourite. I had a stonking crush on Declan and nearly went to Trinity as a result! Cannot wait.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/10/2024 14:04

Signing up to Disney Plus just for this and v excited! Having a family holiday from tomorrow evening so hoping I can download to my iPad, if not I will binge watch all 8 on my own straight after we get home!

CurlewKate · 17/10/2024 14:46

I would love to think of myself as Lizzie Vereker but as anyone who has read any of my posts will agree, I am obviously the social worker whose name I can't remember with no sense of humour and droopy tits.....

bookworm14 · 17/10/2024 14:54

Every Jilly book has a different left wing character with no sense of humour and droopy tits Grin

CheerfulBunny · 17/10/2024 15:12

Maud is one of my favourite characters in the book. I hope they make her similarly dramatic and vain.
Didn't Catlin Moran change her name after being inspired by Taggie's sister in Rivals? I think her real name is something else - Katherine or Kate? This may not be true...

thenightsky · 17/10/2024 15:16

Thank you for the tesco clubcard voucher purchase of Disney suggestions above.

I've had a look at its 3 months of standard Disney for £13.50 in clubcard vouchers.

It is true - she was Catherine but changed her name to Caitlin in homage to the Rivals character.

Is Caitlin O'Hara actually in it? I haven't seen her in any cast lists.

bookworm14 · 17/10/2024 15:19

Just checked and she is in it!

CurlewKate · 17/10/2024 15:20

@bookworm14 "Every Jilly book has a different left wing character with no sense of humour and droopy tits "

I'm happy to own that. But I'm not grubby and I have beautifully behaved children......
