The BBC has acquired Apples Never Fall, a limited drama series based on Liane Moriarty’s (Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers) #1 New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, for BBC iPlayer and TV channels.

With a star cast led by Annette Bening and Sam Neill, the seven-part drama is adapted for screen by writer, showrunner and executive producer Melanie Marnich and produced by Heyday Television, which is part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group.

7 episodes. On weekly

Apples Never Fall centres on the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family.

Former tennis coaches Stan and Joy have sold their successful tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives.

While they look forward to spending time with their four adult children, everything changes when a wounded young woman knocks on Joy and Stan's door, bringing the excitement they've been missing.

But when Joy suddenly disappears, her children are forced to re-examine their parents' so-called perfect marriage as their family’s darkest secrets begin to surface.

it opens a floodgate of revelations as this perfect family is unveiled as being anything but.

As tensions between Stan and the four adult children mount, the investigation into Joy’s whereabouts fuels an addictive mystery.

The series stars Annette Bening (Nyad, American Beauty) and Sam Neill (Peaky Blinders, Jurassic Park) as Joy and Stan, with Jake Lacy (The White Lotus, How to be Single), Alison Brie (GLOW, Mad Men), Conor Merrigan-Turner (Thai Cave Rescue, Shattered) and Essie Randles (The Speedway Murders) as their four children.
Sue Deeks, Head of Programme Acquisition at the BBC says: “Suspenseful and sinister, Apples Never Fall is a compelling mystery drama that will keep BBC viewers intrigued until its riveting final episode.”

I read the book three years ago and really enjoyed it so I was looking forward to this. It's been good so far. Luckily because it's been a while since I read the book I can't fully remember it so it's not affecting my viewing.

I'm the same. Watched the first episode trying to recall the book.

I watched all this crap and if anyone’s thinking of giving up I’d recommend doing so. It doesn’t like anyone other than the OP is watching, though, TV pace anyway.

butterpuffed · 29/09/2024 16:09

I am . TV pace doesn't mean you have to watch it at the time it's on tv , just not before .

Piggywaspushed · 29/09/2024 16:10

I'm watching it TV pace! Not minding it too much. Better than The Wives and The Teacher!

NCTDN · 29/09/2024 16:11

Well I'm quite enjoying it! Each to their own...

Procrastination4 · 29/09/2024 16:18

I loved Big Littlle Lies, the book, but didn’t enjoy the film adaptation as much, and it bugged me that they changed the location to the USA. I read Apples Never Fall, but didn’t enjoy it at all in comparison to Big Little Lies, so I’ve passed on the TV series. ( Well,I caught a few minutes of some episode last week, and decided that I wasn’t missing anything!).
I absolutely loved “The Husband’s Secret”, but I don’t think that’s been serialised.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/09/2024 16:20

@butterpuffed @Piggywaspushed @NCTDN glad im not alone

The husbands secret is my favourite of her books that I’ve read.

Ooh I’ll have to watch this, completely passed me by. One of the few books in the world that I have actually read 😁

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/09/2024 17:31

@ButterAsADip we've seen 1&2

3 is next sat

I think they must have blown the budget for actors on Annette and Sam, because the others are absolutely dreadful.

I read that recently too , wife finds a letter husband wrote years prior, it upends their life . It's a very good read I'd like to see that adaptation

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/09/2024 18:50

Ah thanks @Member984815

I'm watching TV pace too

Oh and I also enjoyed The Husband's Secret
That was the first book of hers I read

Ilovetea33 · 29/09/2024 22:22

I'm still watching. The second episode held my interest a bit more, also curious to find out what really happened.

Thedom · 30/09/2024 08:15

Big Little Lies has been the best of her books I have read so far, haven't read the Husbands secret, but will now. I finished Apples Never Fall over the summer, and thought it was okay, currently finishing Truly Madly Deeply.

I find her books really drawn out for the first half, is it the same for the TV series adaptations?

martinisforeveryone · 30/09/2024 11:28

I'm not commenting because I watched it all. I've got various streaming services and things on the go and have totally lost track of what's being shown where and when.

Much like The Wives really, I wasn't invested in the characters and found it slow, but still wanted to know the resolution of the mystery and how it ended.

Unlike The Wives where it didn't matter if the main characters were alike and looked, quite diverse, I found it hard to imagine the adult children as siblings. I know real life can be like that, but in dramas I like to see a bit of visual similarity, or looks, or mannerisms, just to indicate some connection, to the parents as well as the brothers and sisters.

lololulu · 01/10/2024 09:20

5 minutes into episode 1. I can't bare it 😲

purpleme12 · 01/10/2024 09:24

Wow 5 minutes is a quick time to decide that! 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/10/2024 10:17

Why @lololulu It wasn't that bad

I watched it all, it kept my attention to the end. I liked the fact that Sam Neill and Annette Bening weren't just 2 dimensional "older couple" characters.
