The BBC has acquired Apples Never Fall, a limited drama series based on Liane Moriarty’s (Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers) #1 New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, for BBC iPlayer and TV channels.

With a star cast led by Annette Bening and Sam Neill, the seven-part drama is adapted for screen by writer, showrunner and executive producer Melanie Marnich and produced by Heyday Television, which is part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group.

7 episodes. On weekly

Apples Never Fall centres on the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family.

Former tennis coaches Stan and Joy have sold their successful tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives.

While they look forward to spending time with their four adult children, everything changes when a wounded young woman knocks on Joy and Stan's door, bringing the excitement they've been missing.

But when Joy suddenly disappears, her children are forced to re-examine their parents' so-called perfect marriage as their family’s darkest secrets begin to surface.

it opens a floodgate of revelations as this perfect family is unveiled as being anything but.

As tensions between Stan and the four adult children mount, the investigation into Joy’s whereabouts fuels an addictive mystery.

The series stars Annette Bening (Nyad, American Beauty) and Sam Neill (Peaky Blinders, Jurassic Park) as Joy and Stan, with Jake Lacy (The White Lotus, How to be Single), Alison Brie (GLOW, Mad Men), Conor Merrigan-Turner (Thai Cave Rescue, Shattered) and Essie Randles (The Speedway Murders) as their four children.
Sue Deeks, Head of Programme Acquisition at the BBC says: “Suspenseful and sinister, Apples Never Fall is a compelling mystery drama that will keep BBC viewers intrigued until its riveting final episode.”

Oooh a tele programme where I've actually read the book!

You will have to let me know when finished on tv if endings are the same

They often aren't

I'm finding it a bit annoying.
All the back and forth and the children are awful actors. Not very natural
Savannah isn't too bad.

Agreed. It's a huge disappointment

unconditionalpurelove · 23/09/2024 07:32

Binge watched the whole thing this weekend. Loved it.

martinisforeveryone · 23/09/2024 12:18

I started last night, watched two episodes. Am intrigued by the plot.

Pat888 · 23/09/2024 12:26

I didn’t like the book -can’t quite remember why, possibly characters didn’t ring true -also all the ‘best seller’ blurb raises your expectations.

But Annette Bening is good (but surely getting on a bit now)

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2024 12:42

Annette bening is ok, but Sam Neil looks like he'd rather be somewhere else tbh

westisbest1982 · 23/09/2024 13:08

It’s lacking tension and suspense so far (three episodes). The performances have been variable. I agree with the P.P that some cast look bored.

Xmasbaby11 · 23/09/2024 13:47

The whole family are quite unlike able - but I want to enjoy it so I’ll stick with it for now!

EachandEveryone · 23/09/2024 16:24

I read the book. I’m so disappointed they aren’t Australian it’s ruined it for me. The children can’t act either.

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2024 16:36

Savanna can act, but the four children seem very stilted and it has that channel five film feel to it all!
Not read the book, wonder why it's set in Florida and not Australia ?

lazymum99 · 23/09/2024 16:51

Watched 2 episodes last night. Very watchable but a bit channel 5 ish. Acting not brilliant tbh. Will prob binge this week tho

martinisforeveryone · 23/09/2024 16:56

I haven't read the book, but now I've had a look at Wikipedia for the above question.

David Heyman won the rights to the novel in March 2021 to develop it for television.[3] In February 2022, Peacock gave it a straight to series order.[4] In February 2023, Annette Bening, Sam Neill, Alison Brie and Jake Lacy were cast to star.[5][6][7] In March, Georgia Flood, Conor Merrigan Turner, Essie Randles, Jeanine Serralles and Dylan Thuraisingham were added to the cast.[8][9] Katrina Lenk, Timm Sharp and Nate Mann were among six cast in recurring roles in June.[10]

Filming began in Queensland, Australia and London, England in March 2023,[11] before it was suspended in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[12]

David Jonathan Heyman (born 26 July 1961) is a British film producer and the founder of Heyday Films. Heyman is best known as the producer of all eight instalments of the Harry Potter film series, which are based on a series of popular fantasy novels of the same name by author J. K. Rowling. He then produced all three instalments of its spin-off prequel series, Fantastic Beasts. His work makes him the second-most commercially successful producer of all time.

So yes, if the book was set in Australia and the show runner is British, filming in Australia and London, how odd that they decided to set it in Florida.

Sorry I Can't do links , started a spoiler thread on telly addicts for those who binge.

NO spoilers allowed on here.
Thank you

I've got 1.5hrs left on the audiobook. I'm going to finish it then try the tv show. The book is a slow spiral in on the story.

butterpuffed · 25/09/2024 13:34

This is fairly slow so far , only watched ep 1 , so it's just getting to know the characters . No doubt it'll build up soon .

I don't agree any of them look bored !!

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/09/2024 14:09

I didn't think it was slow

Dad hiding something

Who picked up her bike

OP posts:
martinisforeveryone · 25/09/2024 14:36

The truck that picked up the bike was driven by a man I think, but a woman in the passenger side. Wait, no, we saw it from behind and it'd be left hand drive wouldn't it, so the other way around. The implication was that it looked a bit like Savannah?

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/09/2024 15:09

Savannah def has something to do with it

Whether has an affair with hubby

Or .......

OP posts:
BrenFurlong · 25/09/2024 15:37

I've just watched ep 1 and it's interesting. I loved Big little lies so I'll watch the series to the end.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/09/2024 21:16

Intriguing

I like this

I watched about 15 minutes and found it extremely 'American' and cliched, especially the dynamic between the adult children. I hope it improves.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 26/09/2024 07:41

I think her books are way better than the adaptations. I’ve watched & not find it compelling but I’ve not read this book.

OMGitsnotgood · 27/09/2024 22:09

Not read the book but have binged the series. It was ok but wasn't overwhelmed.
