TV PACE THREAD. NO SPOILERS AS IT WILL BE ON I-PLAYER

The BBC teases: "Nightsleeper is a real-time thriller set on a sleeper train travelling from Glasgow to London, while a government agency desperately tries to intervene in the rapidly-escalating events onboard.

"Can two people who’ve never met, one on the train and one not, work together to save the lives of its disparate group of passengers as the Heart of Britain service hurtles towards what might quite literally be its final destination?"

"Abby Aysgarth, the Acting Technical Director at the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, is finally about to take a well-earned holiday when she receives a phone call that will change everything - the UK railway network is under attack.

Meanwhile Joe Roag, an off-duty cop onboard and hoping for a quiet night. However, over the next six rollercoaster hours, Joe’s about to get anything but, as he and Abby battle both their own distrust and the unpredictable behaviour of the person or persons now in control, desperate to try and stop the Heart of Britain from reaching the end of the line, in more ways than one…"

Joe Cole, who's appeared in hit gangster dramas Peaky Blinders and Gangs of London, plays off-duty cop Joe Roag, while Alexandra Roach, whose screen credits include C4 drama No Offence and period piece Sanditon, stars as cyber security boss, Abby Aysgarth.

The series also stars Alex Ferns (The Devil’s Hour), Sharon Small (The Bay), James Cosmo (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), David Threlfall (Shameless), Daniel Cahill (The Control Room) and Lois Chimimba (Vigil).

While an impressive cast is completed by Gabriel Howell (The Fence), Katie Leung (Harry Potter), Leah MacRae (Rosie Molloy Gives Up Everything), Ruth Madeley (Years and Years), Adam Mitchell (Mother’s Day), Pamela Nomvete (Andor), Scott Reid (Maxine), Sharon Rooney (Jerk) and Parth Thakerar (Gangs of London).

I'm guessing a sand box isn't anything like a sand pit 😂

If anyone was on the MN thread about the Aston University data scrape, they'll know what a sandbox is……..yes, it kind of is like a sand-pit in that it’s a virtual space for 'playing', but with computers <reaches limits of techy knowledge>

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2024 09:12

That satellite phone has a great battery on it
I loved the line ' it's been nationalized ' by the transport minister woman

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2024 09:21

When Pev was reeling off the ' Rocs, the SUv's the FOc 's ' or whatever it all was , I did wonder if some it was made up ! 😆
Must be easier writing a drama set in the 70s or 80s , none of this back then of course.
They would have just all died / been injured

ApolloandDaphne · 17/09/2024 09:32

My techy, cybersecurity DH tried to explain some of the terms to me (they are all real so it seems.

SabrinaThwaite · 17/09/2024 09:36

I also wondered why the train didn’t derail when it hit the goods train tanker, but then did you see the footage a few days ago of a US train hitting a military vehicle on a low loader?

ChocoChocoLatte · 17/09/2024 09:57

@HippyShopper completely agree - there was something rather awkward about the whole thing.

eddiemairswife · 16/09/2024 21:31

One of the characters(Joe?) looks very much like David Platt.

My DP thought it was Macauley Culkin 😂

But it is a horrible jacket, and those jeans are very 1984

Yes, and the sludge-coloured T-shirt! She looks like a nerdy teenage boy from the 80s.

Does anyone know what a sandbox is??

I think it's a like a demo system where you can test new software without running it in a live system...?

Bunionbabe · 17/09/2024 10:25

Don't remember Jo from anything else but he reminded me of a cartoon character. Just realised it's one of the 7 dwarves in the Disney Snow White ( I am ancient). I think it's the little one, Dopey. Sorry.

Piggywaspushed · 17/09/2024 15:41

You're so right!

Abby and paj have just split up so no isn't a couple with the one she was travelling with

He's from brassie

Missed junior and glasses 😂

Still can't beleive drunk is Trev from ee !!!

Did the little boy mouse say he looked like him - it's not going to be his dad is he

We saw his dad in Ep 1briefly. Divorced parents.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/09/2024 16:24

All the tecchie terms they were talking about to each other had me lost , but still managing to enjoy it !

MollyRover · 17/09/2024 20:29

The boss woman is a painfully bad actress. I don't see the point of the character at all. Who is she even supposed to be? If Abby is in charge what is she even doing there apart from getting outraged and clock watching??

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2024 20:56

I can imagine techie types nodding sagely at all the chat about sandbox's and what not , whilst the rest of us just try to read the subtitles and try to work out what it all means.

longtompot · 17/09/2024 23:04

Sandboxes are..

What is a sandbox?
A sandbox is an isolated testing environment that enables users to run programs or open files without affecting the application, system or platform on which they run

https://www.techtarget.com/searchsecurity/definition/sandbox#:~:text=A%20sandbox%20is%20an%20isolated,platform%20on%20which%20they%20run.

deeahgwitch · 18/09/2024 07:39

I don't see the point of the boss woman either. She's not doing anything helpful.
Usually on these types of tv programmes someone from Downing Street bustles in. No one yet.

I suppose the obvious one is stuck on the train. Smile

I too have been pondering the point of the stern woman in the shiny pink dressing gown.

She offers no support or leadership. Just judges with her arms folded.

Bunionbabe · 18/09/2024 11:27

The worst part of this for me is that I can't silence the earworm, aka The BeeGees, which keeps chorusing 'NightSleeper, Nightsleeper' ....etc.

Tragicroundabout · 18/09/2024 17:00

I knew I was going to dislike the cyber expert the moment she cancelled her holiday because of her VERY IMPORTANT JOB.

If the oil rig guy works in the North Sea he wouldn't need a satellite phone. The rigs and platforms pretty much all have mobile reception.

Appreciate the driver's cab is impossible to access and that if the device is removed the train could speed up etc, but why couldn't the driver's cab just be uncoupled from the rest of the train. Presumably the individual carriages don't have independent drive capability? (caveat - not a railway engineer)

The plot is ridiculous, the script likewise and the acting questionable. I'm loving it.

the80sweregreat · 18/09/2024 17:32

Maybe the oil rig worker just preferred the satellite phone as it seems to have a longer battery life than normal ones do ( obviously for the sake of 'poetic license ' the writers needed some way around the mobile phone problem too I suppose?)
Not sure what else they would have used to order to communicate with everyone ? Do the drivers have a walkie talkie or radio on board ? Would that have worked maybe ?
The terrorists obviously didn't think someone would have such a device as a sat phone though ! You just wouldn't

If the oil rig guy works in the North Sea he wouldn't need a satellite phone. The rigs and platforms pretty much all have mobile reception.

But if he worked in the North Sea then why would he be in Glasgow? Wouldn’t he come into Aberdeen then train to Edinburgh and on to London?

So I’m going with either he or his colleague(s) is working in the arse end of nowhere where you’d still need satellite comms.

Well thanks for spreading the love,
I can’t shake it now either!Hmm

deeahgwitch · 18/09/2024 20:43

The oil rig worker is waiting very impatiently for a phone call.
What information is he desperate to have ?
