David Morrissey is back as Detective Chief Superintendent Ian St Clair while Lesley Manville and Lorraine Ashbourne are also returning. They'll be joined by David Harewood, Robert Lindsay, Monica Dolan and Sharlene Whyte, as two new families brought into the mix.

The first series of Sherwood focused on a community still reeling from the use of "spycops", a practice in which police officers were sent deep undercover to infiltrate groups that opposed government policy

These had been used during the miners’ strike in the 1980s and the community had never recovered from the betrayal and the divisions it caused. The series saw DCI Ian St Clair (David Morrissey) investigating a crossbow murder, which stirred up old but still raw tensions.
We saw him teaming up with DI Kevin Salisbury (Robert Glenister) and attempting to bury the long-held rivalries that had existed between them since the 1980s. At the crux of the murder was the shock revelation that one of the town’s key residents was originally an undercover cop.
Sherwood season 2 plot
Sherwood season 2 further explores the themes of fractured communities and the political turmoil in today’s Britain, introducing two new families to the town. Meanwhile a newly appointed Sheriff of Nottingham is passionately fighting local government and business leaders to stop a proposed new mine coming to the area. The mine would bring much-needed jobs but is also an unwelcome reminder of the legacy that has blighted the community for so long...

The turmoil in Nottinghamshire’s ex-coal mining community continues into this second series with more violence plus organised crime running rampant. Caught up in the middle are the Sparrow family — mum Daphne (Lorraine Ashbourne), dad Mickey (Philip Jackson) and sons Ronan and Rory (Bill, Jones, Perry Fitzpatrick). New cast includes Monica Dolan as tough local mum Ann Branson, plus David Harewood and Sharlene Whyte as brother and sister Dennis and Pam. Robert Lindsay also stars as a controversial local businessman with big ambitions.
David Morrissey is back as retired detective Ian St Clair and Lesley Manville again plays widowed Julie Jackson.

Sherwood season 2 new cast members
Sherwood season 2 has plenty of new characters and therefore new cast. Look out for Homeland star David Harewood as Dennis Bottomley and Sharlene Whyte (Stephen) plays Dennis's sister Pam Bottomley. Other new cast are Monica Dolan (The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (https://www.whattowatch.com/features/the-thief-his-wife-and-the-canoe-release-date-cast-plot-trailer-and-all-you-need-to-know)) as Ann Branson and Stephen Dillane as her husband, while Robert Lindsay (My Family) and Robert Emms star, with Ria Zm
itrowicz, Aisling Loftus, Michael Balogun, Christine Bottomley, Oliver Huntingdon, Jorden Myrie, Conor Deane and Bethany Asher.

Oh, come on! It's teetering on the edge of 'so bad it's good', like some of the dafter LoD (Thandie Newton and her suppurating arm? 😄).

Yes! i'm really enjoying it 😄 Have i seen better? yep, definitely, but there are some good actors in it - i think Monica Dolan's excellent - and overall i like the story, despite the occassional "seriously?!" holes/errors. Looking forward to the final shoot out tonight.

Also the fag but left will have DNA on.

Good spot there @Rollergirl11

I guessed right re the dad of Daphne's daughter being the Robert Lindsay's character.
Was it rape ? Sad

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2024 16:14

Yes I got the impression Mickey knew she was police and who the dad was and how -rape was def hinted

Ann was very cold blooded and matter of fact killing Mickey

I thought he was a gonna when they said Ann had been released

Do the police know it was Steffie who killed whatsisname in the van? If so what is going to happen to her? I thought the police had put out an appeal for witnesses. Am finding the plot a bit confusing.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2024 20:55

No they don't know or was her

Just said her and dead dads prints were on the shears

Deeply unconvincing I’m afraid. Surely they would have arrested Daphne? She had a gun? I have to say the scene with Ryan and Steffie brought a tear to my eye.

duc748 · 09/09/2024 23:30

No cliche left unmined, and the plot got ever more cookie-cutter, with the relevant homilies spliced into the speechifying in case the viewer hadn't cottoned on. And I loved how Harry and Ian somehow switched personalities a third the way through! 😃

YorkshireMedusa · 09/09/2024 23:52

The last 10 minutes were like those Channel 5 dramas.

Feedable · 10/09/2024 07:46

I thought the brilliant acting and genuinely moving scenes between Daphne and her husband, Stephie and her brother and Daphne and Lesley Manville's character, made up for plot failures.
I enjoyed it.

Clawdy · 10/09/2024 08:03

Kept me watching from start to finish, great acting, interesting characters, really enjoyed it.

PuppyMonkey · 10/09/2024 08:27

So disappointed with this, cringed my way through that entire last episode.

Cattyisbatty · 10/09/2024 09:28

only watched first series just before this one - first was far superior and made more sense. The Robert Lindsay character was shoehorned in completely.
They never really looked for Kyre’s killer - had to be Stephie really, but no-one gave a toss 😆

deeahgwitch · 10/09/2024 10:56

How could Harry the chief police guy take down Marcus the corrupt officer in the forest ?
He didn't have a gun.
Marcus was bigger than him but made no effort.
Marcus didn't try to run.
It was all pretty pathetic and unbelievable.

And we are to believe Rachel just went along for the ride with Daphne while protesting very mildly 🙄 and calling her Mum. Really !!!!

Nobody bothered to investigate the nephew's killing with the garden shears, despite there being fingerprints on it.

Are we to believe that Ann was given up to Rory Sparrow by one of her lieutenants that easy ?

Did we see the vape being compromised ? If so, I missed that.

I did love when Stephie went back and the money.
Was that after the police had raided it ?

And I'm really not seeing Ian and Julie as a couple.

Would I recommend watching it though it was a bit daft and definitely depressing ?
Yes.

Exactly what i thought. Shes standing there with a gun. Surely armed police would be shouting at her to drop her weapon and then at least attempt to arrest her.
She is part of a well known violent criminal family who hate the police. The police would be all over her!

All of this. As if Harry could over power that guy. Also why didnt he reveal all of Harrys secrets that Harry had told him about being at the victims house the night before.

pollyhemlock · 10/09/2024 11:28

Also why did Harry take Marcus out to the forest at all? He had evidence that he was the snitch. He could have arrested him at the police station or reported his findings to a superior officer.

deeahgwitch · 10/09/2024 12:44

Harry had told Ian St Clair that he had been there - Roy Branson had revealed it in his police interview.
But surely the police would have looked for the mole straight after the Bottomleys were killed.
But if they're so disinterested in who killed Kyre Branson it's not surprising.

Ann Branson might be dead but Roy is still alive.
Will there be Season 3 ?

duc748 · 10/09/2024 12:56

Thus far in the programme Harry hasn't able to find his arse with both hands, but suddenly this ep he changed into a superbrain who'd had Marcus's number all along? I didn't buy that for a second, the whole basis of the story was Harry being a bit shit, basically (for whatever reason). Even in the first ep, as I recall, Ian's claims that Harry was the man for the top job didn't sound like he convinced himself, let alone anyone else.

duc748 · 10/09/2024 12:57

The Guardian piece talked about 'grief-stricken Stephie'. But she wasn't so grief-stricken that she owned up to Kyre's murder!

YorkshireMedusa · 10/09/2024 13:12

What would they do with Roy?

butterpuffed · 10/09/2024 14:01

The last scene when Ian and Julie were smiling at each other at a distance just didn't ring true at all .

Runningcommentary · 10/09/2024 19:09

duc748 · 09/09/2024 14:25

Surely Daphne said, "I was police" (or words to that effect). And Mickey was rambling on, and didn't seem to hear, or take any notice. Of course, in any sane world, Daphne would have said "Did you hear what I just fucking said?!". But, of course, in TVland, she said nowt.

I reckon he knew. He couldn’t let her say it, or acknowledge she’d said it because of his and the family’s hatred of the police. How many times it was emphasised - “dad would have hated the place crawling with pigs” etc.
