Emily in Paris

Just started watching the new season. Was she this thin in previous series’? I’m kind of alarmed. I know she’s always been tiny but I don’t think this thin.

I did enjoy this series. Went off Gabriel quite a bit as his hair looked dodge and he was mainly grumpy and fawned over silly Camille.

I actually like Marcello! But I love an Italian..

Loads of plot holes but then it is supposed to be lightheaded. It is really annoying that she hasn’t bothered to learn French though. That is the most unrealistic part of this. And how hard would it be for them to just write in a bit of an improvement for her? It’s just lazy.

Especially given that after just one weekend in Italy, she is already saying grazie mille (although with a terrible accident) and ciao etc.

mondaytosunday · 22/09/2024 16:21

I lived in Paris for a couple years. They are the least forgiving of anyone who doesn't speak the language or have a perfect accent. No way would Emily still be there! And she is totally self centred- she wouldn't be my friend.
And how can those two girls share a studio flat with all their clothes!

imfae · 22/09/2024 20:47

I binged the second half of the series . It took me a while to catch up with the first lot .

It is pure escapism and if I remember correctly it was a big hit post / during lockdown for this reason .
Having said that it is still easy to find the characters annoying . I think Emily , Mindy , Gabriel & Camille are the most annoying characters . I did used to love Gabriel but he doesn't seem to be as attractive anymore , not sure if this is because they have made him more pathetic / whiny .

I couldn't really get onboard with the silly stuff wanting to spend time with Camille & her family and Emily at least initially being fine with it .

The costumes are completely over the top , a bit like SATC - but that is part of the fun .
I do think I enjoyed more the other characters from the agency when they were on screen rather than Emily .

I think Marcello had a moustache so not remotely attractive to me . As I can still remember growing up in the 70s with dodgy moustaches . But no doubt showing my age and maybe others do find them attractive .

I like Sylvie but Luc is my absolute favourite. I loved the scene with him pegging out lingerie on his house boat!

I also feel ashamed that I don't understand the french scenes either without the subtitles.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/09/2024 08:51

I wish they'd do more about the work the agency does. The other seasons had lots more about the crazy campaigns they'd come up with. Now it's more about the on again off again Emily and Gabriel relationship. Which is actually a bit boring. If Gabriel is SO in love with Emily why does he get so easily side tracked by any woman who shows him a whiff of interest?

I still watch it all but haven't got to the end of this series yet as I was a bit bored with it 🙈!

roses2 · 23/09/2024 10:00

Didn't particularly like the storylines in this series. Emily is way too thin though, that stuck out at me like a sore thumb.

motheronthedancefloor · 24/09/2024 19:49

I'm bored of it now. It doesn't seem to be going anywhere. The outfits are stupid, everyone is shagging each other, its so stereotypical and Gabriel is not sexy anymore. I'm struggling to keep up with the storylines too.

bevelino · 24/09/2024 19:55

I loved the blouse Mindy wore to the races, she looked elegant.

UmaNipples · 24/09/2024 21:06

I love the Mindy character and Ashley Park who plays her is funny. Emily’s character by contrast is absolutely unknown, there’s literally nothing to her. She only says anything interesting when she’s at work and then it’s so ditzy and like she is coincidentally or accidentally saving the day and then everyone congratulates her.

It feels like the writers of the show don’t want to allow her to be shit hot at her job like Sylvie is, because that wouldn’t be seen as cute on Emily. Oddly, nor do they allow the Emily character to be really obsessed with fashion either like a Carrie Bradshaw character in SATC. So she’s apparently just happening to be wearing these full on outfits but isn’t given any personality in the storylines or plot to explain why she is so into fashion. Or how she’s affording to buy it, etc

EasternStandard · 24/09/2024 21:13

I watched the first series and liked Sylvie but Emily was grating and found her being adored by the guy annoying

I quite like airy fashion stuff but not sure I can stand the characters to watch the next series

"Why does he get sidetracked by other women."

Because they have to drag it out for more series!

That's why it's on again off again.

They won't let Gabriel and Emily have their happy ending in season 5. It'll be more likely season 10

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 28/09/2024 15:29

I think Gabriel's hair is meant to signal his state of mind. He had depressed hair this season.
He's a tool. Chased after an ex when still with Emily, got annoyed with her for reacting by leaving, and then suddenly decided he couldn't live without her when she'd moved on.
Maybe Emily is onto something simply being a charming, personality-free avatar to allow people to project whatever they like onto you.

HarrietBond · 28/09/2024 15:41

I’m afraid I am totally confused by all the men in this as they mostly look the same to me. This then means the plot lines are often a mystery as you do need to know who is on screen to master the stuff about whose company is doing what to whom.

My main reason for still watching is that I speak enough French to understand half of what is being said and find the translations interesting. I’m picking up some useful phrases and tuning into French better.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 28/09/2024 17:51

I am still watching it despite believing it to be rubbish, a guilty pleasure! The outfits actually annoy me not just cos they are ridiculous but she lives in a cramped flat and she never seems to be shopping if she is always working. There would be a certain amount of time spent styling too, they are always matching tights and shoes and accessories. When and where does this happen?!

I had to take a break mid series because I'm also watching Call my Agent with DH. Sylvie is Catherine in that series, that was confusing enough but Sylvie's mother shows up in Emily and is Arlette in Call my Agent and I got so confused I has to take a break from one of them

And yes she was incredibly thin all along. In s2, I think, she wore a sleeveless low cut dress and she looked shockingly thin, collar bones jutting out. I don't think I've seen someone that underweight on TV since Ally McBeal.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/10/2024 08:38

I should know better than to expect realism from this show but if there's one thing I can't stand being wrong it's timelines!! I just watched the Christmas episode, Emily bumps into her ex (handsome English guy) and it's all about how long its been, how amazing it is to see each other again, how he is now in a long term relationship spending Christmas together etc. But wasn't he with her at the wedding? When she found out about Camilles pregnancy? And Camille still isn't showing and has just told Gabrielle the truth that day so it couldn't possibly be more than a few weeks since they split, 4 months absolute tops. And why on earth didn't Emily visit home a week or so later. One flight was cancelled so that's it, she decided to not see her family at all.

Its very unrealistic and very badly written. It's like it's written by a five year old. A false pregnancy? Come on!

This part:

Camille thinks she's pregnant
Gabriel asks her to marry him
She agrees.
At the alter, she changes her mind.
Then she finds out she's not pregnant after all.

I mean that writing is so over the top and is absolutely terrible!

FeltCarrot · 11/10/2024 09:00

I want to know where to buy Emily’s magic suitcase. She had a carry on size suitcase to go home to Chicago with Xmas jumpers and presents for her family and still had loads of outfits and boots when she went to stay with Camille’s family.

Agree about Camille, she was so lovely in the first series, so awful in the last.

I don't think camille is bad , I just think that the writing of the show itself is terrible.

So far:

-Camille thinks she's pregnant
-So Gabriel asks her to marry him
-Then camille dumps him at the alter in front of everybody

(Like that would ever happen in real life)

-Then camille finds out that she is actually not pregnant.
-Then camille decides to date a lesbian.

I mean, what the fuck!. Its crazy

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/10/2024 10:18

@FeltCarrot I had the same thought re the suitcase. She had thigh high heeled boots in there! And why was she packing lots of extra Christmas jumpers to bring to Chicago if they all have them there? It was a bit too Mary Poppins for me.

A show can be silly, frivolous and over the top and still well written. This seems to be just badly made.

I'm still going to watch the last few episodes though!

martinisforeveryone · 11/10/2024 11:15

Well obviously the magically expanding suitcase came from the same place as the minuscule apartment with a closet to rival Narnia 😁 Not only for Emily, but Mindy too.
