Ready for the final on Wednesday!

Will Luke be a drag?
Will Ailsa's nerves hold out?
Will Pascha's cheery competence win the day?

I think that this final played to all Luke’s strengths.
This series has been more of a show of ideas and creativity rather than the technology of sewing. Pascha was a very good technical sewer but Luke had the flair, due to designing and making for drag I assume.

I think that's fair. The problem is that the aim of the program has changed - it used to be more about the quality. it's a real shame though as the technical skills are going down and down. I also feel by setting them to do an entirely new technique in the final the contestants were set up to fail. It's a technique that takes a long time to do even if you are experienced.

Indeed. But from the semis, it was obvious a 'diverse', not 'skill' win was on the cards.

And here we are.

I disagree.

Course you can he’s a bloke

Cool. I get confused. Things change so fast.

What other men have won? I can't remember any.

Hedjwitch · 24/07/2024 22:08

I'm pleased Luke won. He seems a lovely person and his last creation was pretty cool.

Brefugee · 24/07/2024 22:10

i think they need to drag the focus back to technique. And yes, some people pick up sewing very quickly, but you need to understand fabric, construction and basic sewing techniques (hooks and eyes, welted pockets, darts, zips... invisible ones!) not cut, sew and hope.

Merryoldgoat · 24/07/2024 22:10

I didn’t enjoy this season as much as previous. Nothing felt finished well or really spectacular.

There were some really nice garments scattered in but it feels more like an experimental textiles class than a sewing competition.

Binglebong · 24/07/2024 22:11

His final m2m was definitely the best there. He was great today and should have won all three rounds. But if you look at the series as a whole I think Pascha is a better sewing. No way could they have given her it with that mess of a dress though.

FriendsDrinkBook · 24/07/2024 22:11

@CaptainMyCaptainI agree. Luke won due to their skills and experience. Definitely the right person of the three.

I didn't love this series as much as others , but it was still an enjoyable way to spend a Tuesday/Wednesday evening.

Thank you for the threads , and thanks all for the sewing chat.

i remember that colonel a few years ago who sewed ball gowns for his wife for the Mess dinners etc, there were 2 men in that final, they were brilliant.

CheerfulBunny · 24/07/2024 22:13

I suppose it's quite hard for the programme producers to keep thinking of new and different challenges but I found the final a bit underwhelming. Gloves? Really? Garments made out of paper party napkins? Nope. And I think the final challenge was probably too hard within the time constraints, meaning they were set up to fail. I hoped Pascha would win as I think she was the best sewer overall but based on the performances in tonight, it was the right result.
Still think it's a great show though that most likely inspires lots and lots of people to have a go at making things which is really important in a sea of crappy talent shows and trashy Love Island reality bollocks.

They were - that was a great series.

@KnickerlessParsons

here are the winners - S3 was a male winner. He was great.

@KnickerlessParsons Matt won s3.

Binglebong · 24/07/2024 22:15

I would love to see some steampunk sewers on there - they are incredibly inventive and used to making stuff out of anything. As long as they weren't pushed to make it about steampunk - them sewing in top hat and adding a cog to every item...

zeibesaffron · 24/07/2024 22:16

I have loved it - I thought Kiell was really good. Last 2 series I had to record and fast forward through Sara pascoes ‘look at me’ nonsense! I would have loved Pascha to win, but based on performance today Luke deserved it!

Getonwitit · 24/07/2024 22:16

Always miss the Sewing bee when it finishes and count down the weeks to the start of the Great pottery throw down.

JessyCarr · 24/07/2024 22:20

Hmmm. A disappointing final, and not just because I am biased by knowing Pascha who didn’t shine this time. The pattern challenge was OK, but small and fiddly and I’d rather have seen them do something with acres of gorgeous fabric in the final. The nonsense in the middle with party paraphernalia was just ridiculous and a waste of time.

Luke’s MTM was the clear winner of the three at the end, but for the final task of a series it was a letdown. A red-carpet final round with less draping and more fitting would have been so much better.

viques · 24/07/2024 22:21

I think they should re think the whole final. Use all the time over two days to make something amazing, eg something fully lined, or tailored with a perfect fit, I think very few of the garments they have made this season have been finished to a high standard and I don’t think that they have been able to really complete something to their satisfaction . Hems, button holes, zips, there always seemed to be something not perfect, too much rush, not enough finish.

Lukes outfit was amazing, though it might have been helped by having such an amazing model who showed it off to such advantage.

JessyCarr · 24/07/2024 22:23

That’s a good idea @viques. A single-project final. They always seem to decide it on the final task anyway. Away with the party napkins!

Netaporter · 24/07/2024 22:25

I think sewing bee has gone the way of the Interior Design masters show….all about the special pronouns and not about who might have a genuine talent. Sometimes we like to just watch people who are really good at what they do creating something we can all either learn from or admire - not think ‘Christ that’s a bit of a dog’s dinner, I wouldn’t wear/have that in my house’. I’m not sure who the commissioning editors or producers think actually watch the shows…?

Thepartnersdesk · 24/07/2024 22:28

I think Pascha would have done well in earlier series.

She was a decent neat sewer and prior to today good at following a pattern.

I don't think she was as creative as the others and in the past that mattered less.

Luke is not as technically excellent as previous years' winners but has a great eye and was innovative. It was a fair result based on the final but I don't think the challenges in the final were entirely fair. Effectively two draping based challenges.

I agree, the competitor I remember most from previous series ( though sadly not her name) was an older woman who made the most exquisite outfits, they did a tailoring challenge that year and hers looked like something from a high end designer, but everything she did was beautifully finished.

lippylippy · 24/07/2024 22:32

I liked Luke’s outfit but as far as I could see there were only two drapes but no sewing knowledge TBF

Me too. Now there was someone I could’ve watched all day. And learned a lot. She was absolutely brilliant.

longtompot · 24/07/2024 22:38

I am happy Luke won, even though I was rooting for Pasha. Their outfit was the best made, and sadly Pashas just wasn't up to her usual standard. Ailsas was nice but the top part was really confusing.

Here are previous years to watch, should you wish to.

I think I his series will change who applies. If you love sewing a variety of outfits and following patterns this is not the show for you. I also don't get how Luke's was draped. It was clever but sewing a tailored jacket on to a top isn't really draping. Pasha used draping as did Ailsa but the black front of her outfit was a mess, the back was nice
